Larry Little, the Miami Dolphins best trade ever

I would argue trading for Don Shula was the best. I think they traded a 1st to the Colts for Shula.
Dolphins didn't trade for Shula. Miami was charged with "tampering" after Joe Robbie signed Shula to a contract after the NFL/AFL merger. If Shula had signed before the merger, the team would not have had to give the Colts their 1st round pick.

Thanks for the info... I always thought it was a trade. Now I know the rest of the story.

Little was great..but the trade to bring Paul Warfield was better...my opinion...

Good article. Short but sweet! Yeah, no matter how you get a great coach, that's the best possible addition. We tampered to get Shula, and we compensated them. The Patriots also tampered to get Belichick (just ask the Jets), but hey, no price would have been too steep.

But listing those incredible trades ... wow. Just curious though, I thought the Dolphins traded the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft for Paul Warfield. And with that pick the Cleveland Browns selected some obscure player, while Warfield went on to become a Hall of Fame player and a great deep threat for the undefeated '72 team. Anyway, the personnel person pulling the strings back then was by far our best in history. He also got players like Manny Fernandez, Dick Anderson and a ton more with low draft picks and great trades. That talent overhaul was stunning when Shula came in.

Loved when Little would get out and pull for Csonka. A scary sight for defenses.

Joe Thomas orchestrated those trades. He was there from 65 to 71. Joe Robbie let him go......Bobby Beathard came in after.

Both of those guys were stellar. But wow, Joe Thomas ... what a phenomenal talent evaluator and front office guy. I cannot imagine letting someone that good go. I realize that we didn't have much money back then ... talking shoestring budget, but man, those are the type of people you find a way to keep.

After Thomas went to the Colts he dealt a lot of veterans away. Took him a few years, but he turned them around too. Ted Marchibroda/Bert Jones era

Its arguable...but the reason I believe your wrong is the Dolphins dominant O-line and the running of Csonka-Mercury Morris-Kiick was the backbone and identity of those great teams...and Larry Little, Jim Langer, Bob Kuechenberg, Norm Evans & Wayne Moore formed that amazing line.

2, should be 3 (Kuech) hall of famers.

Yeah as really one of the best trades for the Fins ever!
