For so many of these Dolphins’ veteran pickups, the question is what exactly are the Dolphins getting. With tight end Julius Thomas, are they getting the player who caught 24 touchdowns in 28 games with Denver or the one who wasn’t a difference-maker in Jacksonville? With Nate Allen, are they getting the starting-caliber safety from his tenure in Philadelphia or the middling backup of the past two years in Oakland?

It's funny, I was just posting about this very thing. IMHO, Timmons is in decline for the last one and a half seasons. He is noticeably less quick and less fast. I do think he can show up in better shape this year and make a bit of a resurgence, but I agree with the analysis that he will never reach his heyday. He's simply not that LB any more. What I'm hoping for is a good solid run stopping veteran to help groom McMillan. I want from him the same sort of thing I always want from Koa Misi, solid tackling, good instincts, and knowing where to be at all times. I'm not expecting or requiring great range any more, nor am I expecting good coverage skills. I'd like to see him at least be a good 2 down run stopper though.

The odds are, he will be somewhere in between his heyday in Denver, and the last couple seasons in Jacksonville.

Are we all still hoping for 12 TDs per season? Of course, but reality is that he will fall somewhere between his best seasons and his worst seasons.

Let's just hope it's much closer to the best than the worst.
 
I don't know if Timmons is in decline or not. What I do know, aside from these stats don't tell the whole story, is that he had 14 tackles and 2 sacks vs. Miami in the playoffs and also had 14 tackles vs. New England a week later. He's had 5 straight years of 100+ tackles and 7 straight years where he hadn't missed a game.

As far as Julius Thomas is concerned, his health is the number 1 thing he needs to get in check. Aside from that, I'm sure you can blame Jacksonville for being a place where careers go to die.

Take Allen Robinson for example. In 2015 he had 80 catches for 1,400 yards and 14 TDs. In 2016 he had 73 catches for 883 yards and 6 TDs.
Now take Allen Hurns. In 2015 he had 64 catches for 1,031 yards and 10 TDs. In 2016 he had 35 catches for 477 yards and 3 TDs.

Blake Bortles has been the mainstay for these receivers and I don't know if it's fair to judge any of them for their performance the last few years. With Thomas it's all about staying healthy.

Ya I totally agree.

He will probably cap off at 6-8 tds which is more than respectable and just what we need.

We have too many options including a running game and don't have Peyton Manning lol

Ya I don't know either but he sure as hell didn't seem like he missed a beat his last 2 games.

Re the interchangeability of the 4 linebackers, I think the 2 obvious questions are:
(a) How quickly does Raekwon McMillan learn everything to become a legit starter?
(b) How healthy is Koa Misi? He took a big pay cut, how much gas does he have left in the tank? Koa has never been a backup LBer, but he's now paid as one.
 
We just need one solid season out of Timmons. We'll add a fast athletic linebacker who can rush the passer in the '18 draft to compliment Kiko and McMillan.

Barring a scheme change I'm doubting it. Think all signs are gonna be pointing towards a safety maybe a dt depending on how Jordan Phillips shows. Wild card being tight end if Julius Thomas doesn't pan out.

Base de and kick inside sub also could be on the table.
 
I like how every one forgets about picking up Fasano. His blocking skills intrigues me.

Hoops beat me to it, but I would love this b/c it would mean a change in scheme. Much needed but Burke seems too enamored with stank ass gym shorts for it to take place. Who knows, maybe after another let down defensively despite the added talent will alert them to their insanity of running the same **** over and over but expecting a different result. Still flabbergasted that Burke refers to the "wide 9" as a defense. Yuck.
 
Timmons is a self proclaimed fixer. I like the sound of that.

Watched his interview and came away with a few impressions. The guy doesn't look very conditioned right now. Sure he has time to get into game shape but he looked a bit "bulkier than I was expecting.

For the talk of him being a leader figure, he didn't come across very well spoken nor very animated nor tough/passionate sounding.

Again, the guys play over 10 years speaks for itself so this is not to slight any of that. I was just hoping to see from the interview a guy in top shape and with a bit of the eye of the Tiger, to help turn our LB woes around. I didn't see that guy, just another vet with a job.

It's unfair to read a lot into these, but that's human nature and often you can learn a lot from body language and how a guy holds himself.
