Dolphins may cut Leonte Carroo a year after trading up for him

In the NFL people get a hurt a lot, as it turns out it's a violent sport. We run a 3 WR set that requires 3 talented WRs to be on the field, but odds are one or more are likely to get injured, so you draft guys In the later round that can sub in. I know everyone thinks we gave up the farm(a 4th and 6th round pick) but the fact is Carroo is cheap. He will never earn more than 1 million against the cap on his initial contract, so cap wise we have a cheap back up for 4 years. If he blows up and forces his was on the field, then that is a beautiful problem to have.

There is also the Devante Parker reason to have Carroo on the team. The next 2 years we have real choices to make on him. In 2018 we have to decide if we pick up his 5th year option. That is a choice to pick up a nearly 10 million dollar option. If he improves this year and becomes a true #1 then it's a no brainer, but if he has another 700 yard 4 td season, or worse, or struggles with injuries again, well then you have a dilemma. If he doesn't make that choice easy keep in mind we have nearly 10 million dollar cap hit with Kenny and will need to spend 11-14 million to keep Jarvis, so that is a lot on the books for WR. Having a guy on the roster who knows the offense with .9 million dollar cap hit will be very handy if we do move on.

Well done Dajesus! the revisionist historians love to play with the details.

....Yup...You can actually draft a position that is a strength and/or has depth and keep the position strong and not be held over a barrel when contract talks come up....imagine...having someone to trade because you anticipate a huge contract year while grooming a player that costs you the money of a 4th round pick....hmmmm...all that and no hold outs and keeping your system in tact because you had the insight to groom your own through the draft....

I wrote about this today. http://www.dolphinstalk.com/2017/05/the-leonte-carroo-debate.html

It is too early to tell if Carroo will be a good player or not, so not knocking him. But overall the trade made zero sense last year and makes less sense now. Guy's like Carroo are solid players but nothing special. We can get them any year, any time in the draft without having to give up a 3rd and 4th round draft pick to do it.

Using that many picks for a position we didn't need is and was stupid. But you can keep telling yourself that it's okay.

You realize that has nothing to do with Carroo, right? He was a 3rd round pick end of story. You can hate on Mike T for this all you want, but the fact is we drafted a WR in the 3rd round. Just because we spent extra picks to get there doesn't make Carroo anything more than a 3rd round pick. There are not a lot of 3rd round WRs that have dynamic 1st seesons. Stop hating on the kid because you didn't like what the president did to get the draft pick.

Oh, Dajesus, what these guys could have done with those extra picks, the possibilities are endless!!!!

Grow up, I'm not hating on the kid. but giving that much up for Him was stupid. We could of really used those picks this year. But you keep telling yourself it was worth it.

I am grown. I didn't like the trade, and when we made the trade and it wasn't for a lb I was upset, but as an adult I have moved on and accepted the pick. I am also very excited Grier has moved in to his job as gm, and took control of the draft, as I hate how Mike T throws away future draft picks for players he fell in love with. The winning organizations have shown us not to fall in love with certain players in the draft or free agency. Over spending far out weighs benefits of getting the player.

All that being said I'm not going to act like a spoiled brat, have tantrums, and hate a player unjustifiably because what Mike T did to get him. I like Carroo. I like everything he did In College. I like his attributes. I love that when I went to My only home game last year, and Parker went down, Carroo made the game winning TD catch. I love that in our 3wr set our first back up is a kid with promise taken in the 3rd round, and not a 5'6" gimmick player, or 3 undrafted free agents. I love that he spent his offseason clinging to Jarvis Landry. He did the week camp with Jarvis, Brown, and Ocho Cinco. I am optimistic he will make the most of this opportunity. He is a Dolphin for the next 3 seasons, so I want him to be awesome. Sorry if you want to pout about what went down over a year ago.

Oh I get it, because I think it was stupid to give that much up for a player we didn't need, I'm throwing a tantrum. Grow up. Please show me where I said I hate the player, this has nothing to do with carroo. Funny how you bitch on my take of the pick, and yet you bitch about gimmick player that played a bigger roll on the team.

I didn't like the trade at the time but wouldn't be upset if Carroo ended being a good player. There really isn't any place for him to play though. Unless the plan really is to let Landry walk after this year.

Personally, I'd consider Carroo's release a good sign and not because I don't like him. First, because it will show Gase is willing to cut loose from a mistake and not get tied up with ego. Second, because that means Carroo's replacement has to be CLEARLY better to beat him out. I must say, I his draft cost has no affect on my position - I just want the best 53. BTW, real world is no one will BARELY beat him out.

ok...what I am saying is we will see...the story isn't over...you can speculate all you want on woulda, coulda, shoulda...time will tell

I know exactly what you were saying, but you're only listen to yourself talk. We needed help on the offense of line, linebacker, safety. D Tackle. We had other needs then to waste resources on a position we really didn't need.

Carroo is making this team like it or not. Too heavy of an investment, and he's a hard worker with quite a bit of potential. Don't blame the guy because we made the stupid move of giving up so many picks to draft him. I don't think the FO expected Kenny Stills to produce at the level he did last season.

Grant is the guy who should be gone. I hope Drake does well as a punt returner now that he's getting reps there, because he's a far better kick returner and actually offers something on offense.

Juice, DVP, Stills, Carroo, Ford, and either Morgan or Scott.
Yeah, I pretty much agree with all of this. It's nice that we such an abundance of talent in this group. Probably our strongest position, IMO
