Last year, the Dolphins got minimal receiving production from the tight end position once they lost Jordan Cameron early in the year. Cameron was shaky enough for Plan A after underachieving the season before, and there wasn’t much depth behind him. The end result was Dion Sims leading the position with 256 yards and four touchdowns on 26 catches.

Miami is one Julius Thomas injury away from being in a similar spot.

This team had a lot of needs and there are a limited number of draft choices. The defense was so bad and was neglected so long it is a tough criticism to say that they could have / should have drafted a TE. We also have a similar problem at Center - we have a lot of question marks after him. Can't fix everything in a few drafts.

A general comment. I understand the concern about individual players and their injuries histories. However, it seems a remarkable number seem to think ALL players with injury histories will suffer significant injuries this year. Clearly an unrealistic mindset.

That said, I see JT as a positive. Can't be more of an injury concern than Cam was last year so I don't see the risk as worse. And it's just as Miami is "betting big" on Jones, Wake, Pouncey, Tannehill, Ajayi, and others, and as all 32 teams "bet big" on players with injury histories. Personally, I'm less concerned with JT's history than some of the others.

With the amount of needs (not wants) this team had, it would have been difficult to justify drafting a tight end. I too wonder about JT's health going forward, but it is what it is, injuries are part of the game, we just have to trust the coaching staff and keep our fingers cross. (and toes too).

I found the article to be boring!

Really -the article says ZERO -

Every team in the NFL is counting on EVERY player that they intend on starting in a BIG way - and lots of other guys who they have no idea at this point in time are even relevant to the discussion (see Zak Prescott last year at this time - the cowgirls could have NO IDEA)....

And what the Dolphins are paying Thomas could not be MORE irrelevant to the author's point in the article....

And so yeah - miami is counting big time on a guy who this year may or may not perform like he did last year, or 3 years ago or whenever - JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER NFL PLAYER in the league! OMG!!!

People like me are desperate for NFL news this time of year and we in a desert right now!

It's not a well thought our article. We hope JT breathes life in to the lifeless TE spot, but it's not a "big bet." As last year TE numbers show we can make the playoffs with only counting on our TE blocking. You can't look at The Fasano pick up with out talking about blocking, yet this article did. With 3 dynamic WRs, and two running backs Drake and Williams who a very good pass catchers, we will be fine if we don't top 250 yards again from a TE. If Thomas returns to form it's a welcome bonus that would make us more dynamic, but not critical.

Fasano caught fine when he was here and better yet he and RT have had a relationship outside of football that will help them on the field this year. Both our starting tight ends last year were concussion prone and missed a lot of valuable time. Continuity cannot be overstated and in some cases is more important than talent. JT is a talent for sure and behind are a couple of less talented but more dependable options.

I'm optimistic about the Julius trade. It has potential to be the biggest move of the offseason. I was never a huge fan of Fasano, but him being rated #1 blocking TE perked my interest. The combo of the two of them could be pretty nice this year.

In Gase I'm trusting - at least for now since there's no reason not to.

If he's bullish on JT having been in the trenches with, and bringing out the best in him, then so am I!

I can't recall a TE the Dolphins have had that had perfect health. When we had Charles Clay he had injury issues, I seem to remember him missing games, so it's a non article.

Yup, it could turn out to be a great trade, well worth taking the risk on him. All accounts so far on Thomas are sounding good but we'll see....we're not ruined if it doesn't work out, that's for sure. Fasano was a nice pickup for a young offense and Gray was serviceable at least last year, worst case scenario.
