Dolphins rookie Ford with surprise contact

Stringfellow the rookie reciever from Mississippi State is another possible talent on our roster. To bad we don't have this same issue on the oline and linebacker.

Think Stringfellow is a 2017 practice squad prospect, but his odds of making the 53 man roster are behind Carroo, Ford, Grant, Morgan and Scott. In fact I would say his odds are only slightly higher than Francis Owusu's or even Mitch Mathews.

Some pointers from Steve Smith and the kid is a shoe in?

I can't wait to see Jakeem in the preseason. He doesn't fumble, he muffed some punts being too anxious to make something happen. If his catch rate doesn't improve is the main thing. Otherwise, he's capable of being the most dynamic player in the NFL...if you can get him the ball.

If Ford makes it, then great for him. But I highly doubt he'll supplant Grant.

My hope is Miami can find a slot corner or 3rd down running back that returns punts once other teams start making their roster cuts. I would like to have the punt return job come from another position and just keep 5 receivers Landry, Parker, Stills, Carroo and Ford. Actually with Parker and Stills picking up more of the receiver slack I don't have a problem with Landry being back there half the time.

This is my thinking, as well. These are the clear top-5 talents at WR on the roster.

The main problem for Ford and Carroo will be finding opportunities. The three guys in front of them are young, ascending talents, and Julius Thomas also figures to see many more targets.

Carroo should see a significant bump in activity (nowhere to go but up), and it's good that he's back down to 210. Ford might not see much time in 2017. Gase is demanding of his WR's, and even if Ford catches on quick, he'll be well behind Parker, Landry, Stills, and Carroo. I think he's a very good WR prospect, but we won't get a good look at him this year. Even though it may be hard to get him on the field, I would not risk stashing Ford. You want him for 2018, after he's had a year to develop his body.

If Parker, Stills and Landry stay healthy I'm fine with the other receivers getting few targets. If the big three are getting targets and then Julius Thomas, Ajayi and Drake get fed a bit, I don't see a lot left over for the others barring injuries.

It's odd they didn't elaborate on Smith's relationship. I have never heard that was his did. Were they estranged? Then he gets drafted and he wants to call? Seems odd they didn't elaborate on the convo.

I can't wait for this competition to play out. I wouldn't be surprised if we keep 6 WRs if Grant is a beast on returns and the fumbles stop. I don't think Grant is a viable option at WR, nor does Gase want to be forced to put him at WR if someone gets injured. It is funny how much attention our 4th and 5th WR is getting as combined they had 3 receptions last year.

He's not related to Smith. Ford's dad called Smith and asked him if he would train Ford. The article says Smith declined, saying he's not looking to train anyone right now, but he did give Ford a few tips. That's the extent of the connection between Smith and Ford.

"Earlier this year, Ford’s father called Smith, who retired in January, and asked if he could train his son.

Smith said he wasn’t interested in training players but “he watched my film and told me things I can improve on,” Ford said.

The Dolphins rookie and Smith now keep in touch."

Yeah, it is funny. We've been relegated to a farm team since Philbin. Jesus, we lost a ton of talent under Joe.

- Vontae Davis
-Jared Odrick
-Olivier Vernon
-Lamar Miller
-Rishard Matthews

Odrick and Matthews both had revenge games against us...and good for them BTW.

Now with a very competent offensive coach we can cherry pick our projects. I'm still under the belief that Gase will add value to our players and that we'll end up trading some prime offensive players for some premier defensive players.

Wow that was an epic fail on my part. Thank s for the clarification.

We lost Miller, Oliver and Mathews under Gase not Philbin. If you consider that we also let Shelby and Grimes walk last year too it was a pretty big mistake. Consider we were basicly last in run defense last year where Oliver and Shelby would have helped, spent a 3rd round pick last year on Drake to replace Miller, another 3 picks on Caroo 3rd, 4th and 5th to replace Mathews, a 2nd and 6th last year on Howard to replace Grimes and this year our 1st round pick on Harris basically replaces Oliver. So we haved spent 7 draft picks on 4 rookies none who are full time starters to date to replace 4 NFL starters we let walk. So imagine for a minute if we still had those 4 beteran players on the roster and had a redraft, which players we may have drafted instead and just how much different this roster might look like now.

I still say letting Matthews and Miller were good moves. Ajayi doesn't shine if Miller is on the roster and Landry would get his numbers either way, but either Parker, Matthews or Stills would have had very minor role last season. That means either Matthews is playing a role he's happy with but you're not playing Parker, your former first round pick or Stills is seeing less attention down the field then he got last year. Matthews wanted to be a one or two option and he wasn't going to get that in Miami. Miller wanted to get 20 + carries per game and it seems Ajayi is more worthy of those carries than Miller. Miller or Matthews wouldn't have been happy in Miami.

So you support spending 7 draft picks on 4 players, 3 part time players last year and 1 hopefully full time player this year to replace 4 veteran starters. Seeing that we have a veteran roster with tons of depth I understand the logic. ;)

You can look at it that way. I say look at the money we saved by not paying Miller, Vernon, Matthews and Shelby and dispite not having those 4 players the team still won 10 games and made the playoff with cheaper and younger alternatives. I don't think Matthews or Miller were going to stay to be depth players. You can't make players sign a contract if they don't want to stay. Miller might have re-signed, but it would have been a mistake to commit to him for the role he wanted.

10 receptions... 145 yards....2tds
in 3 years is hardly what I call "beating up on my Caines"

I'll be more specific next time for ya lol

As an ACC fan (Canes fan), I watched him "Beating up on every team"

210 rec, 2967 yds, 24 tds in three years is beating up on opponents.

He left after his junior year. Not to mention, the guy had no QB.

There's a reason he was projected to be a 4th-5th rounder by http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/isaiah-ford?id=2558071

Yep. I do think that both Carroo and Ford have higher ceilings than Stills, so if either reaches his potential sooner than expected, knowing Gase, that player would eat into Stills' reps. But, it seems like a long shot for 2017 - good problem to have.

One thing Omar Kelly said a few weeks ago that really sticks with me is that the Dolphins seem to have given up on the idea of Grant as a viable slot receiver option and seem to be using him outside and in small doses at various receiver positions. I know it came from Kelly so it may or may not be correct, but if it's true I have a hard time seeing Grant on the team as a boundary/gimmick receiver. If you don't have confidence in him playing the slot than I think he's fighting an uphill battle that would take a big training camp to justify a regular season job.

For once Kelly is correct as are you IMO.

If Jakeem can't play slot, he really shouldn't be handed the job based off what he did last year.

Were too talented with too many options that can play both offense and return kicks.

I'd have Drake return kicks. He had 1 more KO return Td than jakeem did anyways.

PHINS UP!!!
