Dolphins trade for Saints LB Stephone Anthony

Dion Jordan was the 3rd overall pick in the '13 draft. Tom Brady was the 199th pick in the 6th round. What round a player was selected are as meaningless as highlight reels.

He was talking about his salary in response to the claim that we were taking on a big contract. Nothing to do with his calibre as a player. And he was right. He’s earning very little.

Miami announced today the indefinite suspension of Lawrence Timmons who will likely never play a down for the Dolphins unless he figures a way back into the good graces of the franchise. Timmons went AWOL on Saturday and did not play on Sunday. Miami, already thin at linebacker needed to make a move.
The Saints have been dumping their roster for two seasons now and the Dolphins acquired Stephone Anthony for a 2018 5th round draft pick. This according to Ian Rapoport via Twitter.

You used the biggest NFL steal in draft history and the Dolphins biggest bust as proof for an arguement. That is like saying don't work, as you can win the powerball, it happened to a guy in MA last month. Chances for success in the NFL is reflective of what round you were drafted in, and if you looked at the whole picture instead of two people you would know that. Does that mean Anthony will be a success in Miami, no. It does mean he has a much higher ceiling, and better physical tools than the 3 undrafted free agents that were dressed in LA.

Exactly. Anthony played well his rookie year in the middle, before the Saints started moving him around. He is bigger, taller and faster than Hull.

If the Dolphins plan to play Anthony in the middle, I'm all for this move. Hull has zero ability to defend against the pass. He is simply too short and slow to be a quality NFL starter. Hard worker, good teammate, but he should be sitting on the bench. Rivers shredded him.

Meh, at worst he sucks. No big loss, especially with what we have already at LB.
At best, he plays solid and helps out a tad.

I hope Saints fans don't forget this guy was selected with the pick they got from the Jimmy Graham trade. They're getting Ireland'd right now there and are in year 3 of a "rebuilding" process which they may blow up after this season. It's a case example of trading young, talented players away for picks not being a sound strategy.

As for us, I think he's just for depth.

I don't mind trading for Anthony. If you are gonna go get a guy, at least we picked up a guy with physical tools to work with. I do mind the cost. I wouldn't bat an eye at a 7th here. But to me the question isn't, "Is the guy an ideal Mike for this year?" it's "Does the guy upgrade Mike over what Hull can give us?" We have our long term MLB. And I don't think we gave up a 5th so Anthony can simply patch our LB unit for 2017. IMHO they view him as a long term piece most likely at SLB. For 2017 he's a patch either at SLB or MLB.

Some analysis from ESPN:

"..He was clearly at his best when playing middle linebacker, his college position. He started all 16 games there as a rookie in 2015 and led the Saints with 112 tackles.

But that was also the year the Saints' defense set NFL records for most touchdown passes allowed in a season and highest opponent passer rating. Anthony had a lot to do with that as the “quarterback” of the defense, who called signals and wore the communication device to relay plays from the sideline.

The Saints tried moving him to strongside linebacker last season so he didn’t have to do as much thinking, but it didn’t take. Neither did his temporary move to weakside linebacker this summer.."

From all I've read, it seems that Stephone Anthony is a physical freak, who is best at MLB, but is weak at quarterbacking the defense.

So maybe keep Stephone Anthony at MLB, and have Kiko QB the defense.

I actually think we keep Timmons this season and Anthony replaces Hull at MLB.

Doesn't make sense to bring him in and put him in the position where he's struggled the most. He's a natural MLB. This is the true replacement for McMillan, IMO.

We should be able to survive the Jets with crap LB play but we will need to tighten up against the Saints.

I like that he at least has a ton of potential as opposed to other available options, which are all stop gaps. Let's see what happens.

We gave up a 5th round pick, took on a big contract (he was a 1st rounder) and my guess is he won't be here next year. Hurts the cap, hurts the draft.

Hurts the draft? Really? For a 5th round pick? Besides, the Dolphins do a better job drafting AFTER the draft. We are the best in the business in terms of drafting "undrafted free agents"

I remember this kid in the draft. I had him as a 4th round pick but knew he would shoot up after the combine. He killed the combine with some eye popping athleticism but none of it translated on the field. Very slow to read and diagnose plays...very slow. Athleticism helped him get away with his slow reactions in college...clearly not the case in the NFL.

Your post is inaccurate....he has proven to be a run stopper...it's in coverage he has not developed yet.

He is a cheap perfect run stopper to replace McMillan this year....and potential the coaches can work with....great move.

This is me jsut being an optimist but maybe he fits what we do. I feel like the saints are a go go go forward pressure defense ever since they had luck with it in 2009. In that syle dont you have to be able to read and adjust well which isnt his strength. If we put him in a flow to the ball and close the gap and let someone else make the adjustments and just give him a man to mark could that help him succeed more?

Bingo....somebody else gets it.

Timmons isn't going anywhere.

Anthony is a talented run stopper...he fills the McMillan/Mauluga role.

Do I wish we had give up one of our 3 picks that we have in round 7? Of course but we gave up a 3 and a 4 to draft Carroo who's our #5 WR when we didn't need one so giving up a 5 for a LB is not that horrible. If this guy actually gets on the field it might be a bargain compared to Carroo.

Ozzy rules!!
