Dolphins trade for Saints LB Stephone Anthony

Can Melaluga play strong on early downs with Anthony at MLB if we do part ways with Timmons?

Melaluga looks so out of shape, I would be surprised if after running out on the field, he did not have to catch his breath for a few minutes.

My quick take is he looks much better aimed at the QB than defending space.

Assume he's a one trick pony = have him attack the pig wherever it goes and play smarts around him.

Unsure that's viable in our current system.

Defer to the football geeks.

:)

Well......

Looks like we tried with McMillan and Timmons. Raekwon is a **** happens, but he'll be back. Timmons was a **** you, and probably won't be back. Oh, the asses he'd have to kiss......

Whew, what a season. Two starting LBs out before game 1. And all the rest.

Gase has got to be wondering what he did to deserve all this.....

Sounds like he's kissed them.

I listened to Gase's inferview with WQAM earlier, found it interesting that he said tbe FO had been in talks with the Saints about this move for a long time

It's the new CBA. Guy's making like 4.5M over the next 2 years with nearly no dead money next year. Doesn't hurt the cap. I much rather run a guy out there that can tackle and at least has the physical tools in coverage over a guy like Hull. I'm a lot happier to take a guy from a poorly coached team, especially with Anthony's tools. It's a desperate time at LB, sometimes you gotta roll the dice and it's not hard to recoup a 5th rounder if need be. When there's this many injuries this early in the season you're going to need to make some sacrifices to cap/draft capital.
We have a chance to grow into a good team this season, with NE defense looking like crap we could steal the east. I would rather try to win then let another season pass by. If we fail it is just another and we regroup for next year

Maybe the Saints are bad at evaluating LB talent. After all, they traded WR Kenny Stills to us, in exchange for LB Danell Ellerbe.

The Saints are bad at evaluating all talent and Miami has made out pretty well. Ricky Williams, Reggie Bush, Kenny Stills and now Anthony. I like our odds.

I won't hold my breath that he will amount to anything for us. He isn't exactly the brightest bulb in the lamp by the sounds of things.

Definitely looks best downhill but hey that's what the wide 9 attacking front demands so it might work well. His intangibles look great, and he looks very aggressive in those videos so fingers crossed.

Chances are he's NOT Lawrence Taylor.

But he may be a viable NFL player in a defined role.

That said -- I think we did "OK" regarding the Kenny Stills trade with NO.

So at least we have a somewhat proven history with that source.

:)

I've tried and I can't find anyone. You usually will sacrifice athleticism and range for instincts which is the offset in a 2 down mike.

If you can name me a quality 2 down mike I'd bet that their instincts are above average.

The kid brown in buffalo is basically a 2 down mike that they scrape by with in the nickel cause his instincts are above average.

I can't think of anyone.

These switches rarely flip. Highly either or and the ones that do develop usually played a different position in college like transition from undersized de to off the los lb. and even then most of them instinctually are average at best over the long haul.

I've seen position switches where it works, from Safety or DL to LB ... but if they don't have those instincts by the time they reach the pros, the chances to develop them are far less common.

If Stephone Anthony still has talent and is worth a flier, why are the Saints, a team with a genuinely atrocious defense giving up on him? It's not like they have an abundance of talent at the LB position and he is signed cheap enough he shouldn't have any real affect on their cap situation. Throwing away picks is never a good idea, it's not just the chances of a 5th rounder becoming a star, its assets that you don't have to move up in the draft. Take this year's draft, wouldn't it have been nice to have that 3rd and 4th rounder we gave up for Caroo to try and move up and draft a falling player like Malik Hooker?

That's a good point. I looked at who Miami could have drafted instead of Caroo and it certainly didn't make me feel better about the deal.

I think there's a point where you realize a player isn't fitting your system. That was likely the case with Anthony and New Orleans. We'll have to see how the trade works out. I've read that 5th rounders have about a 10 percent chance of making the roster so if he's a part-time player who can contribute you're ahead of the odds.
