Cutler vs. Tannehill Season-Long Comparison Thread

The problem is, our Oline exacerbated Cutler's flaws.

If you give him time he keeps them to a minimum. Can't argue with the fact that he was off target alot and throwing off his back foot didnt help. But its impossible to run those timing routes when the pocket collapses as soon as the ball is snapped.

Tannehill had the same damn problem and everyone made excuses for him, well imo, Jay is entitled to those same excuses.

The play-calling has to adjust for that, however. The New England quick passing game for example would be one possible remedy in such situations.

There was also zero constraint plays called if I'm not mistaken. Against a very aggressive defensive line that's overpowering the opposing offensive line, there should be a healthy dose of middle screens and other such constraint plays, that make the defensive line's penetration worthless. You simply let the defensive line in and throw over the top of them.

Couldnt agree more.

We throw the wrong kind of screens. Gotta stop those WR screens and hit the HB or TE screen just beyond the Dline. I dont understand why we refuse to utlize those plays.

Ryan Tannehill has never in his career had an issue with trying to protect his body instead of standing in to complete a pass. If he did, he wouldn't have a busted ACL.

I'm not trying to knock Tanny, and you're right.

However, Tanny took a ****-ton more sacks.

Cause they are run pass options based on box count

Miami utilizes a lot of its inside zone run game out of rpos.

They aren't going anywhere folks

You want to gain more yards out of em get the qb to throw them to the correct placement. We got guys killing their momentum cause the placement sucks frankly. To be effective the timing and placement must be spot on

I'm going home to break down the offensive tape and qb play

Yep glutton for punishment. I want to make sure my cutler read is accurate plus dig into gase play design

Please take a look if you can and try to discover what exactly it was that the offense tried to do to counter the defensive penetration as the game went on. From my view it appeared to be almost nothing.

Of course, once you get into a situation where the opposing team knows you have to pass predominantly, it has quite the edge.

I'm not gonna lie it's harder cause all the timing based aspects of the o are out without tanny. There's no back foot hits ball out

Id have to back and watch it again...and I'd rather re-circumcise myself...but I thought the pass blocking of the line was ok. Not good, but okay. The run blocking was atrocious. My take was that Cutler was missing open receivers, throwing off his back foot and shotgunning the ball even if not pressured.

While I'd not hang my hat on the pass blocking I don't think it was nearly as ugly as the turnstiles we had at the beginning of last year when Thomas and Turner were providing the "Lookout!" Blocks until they were invited to try out for other clubs.

Cutler's mechanics have been garbage thus far. He got away with it (at times) in week 2. Last week....not so much. QB guru needs to drive that point home this week but it won't matter if the offense line blocks like they did last week. I even saw Fasano blocking like crap on a sack.

Cutler needs to realize you cannot consistently rely on arm strength only. A few lucky plays in week 2 made him look like an all star but....

One thing that's very apparent on this look is Julius Thomas is getting his ass kicked in the run game as a blocker. Doesn't matter if it's the strong safety Adams or the undersized backer lee Thomas is getting abused.

And a tight end that can't handle a strong safety in line or a undersized backer is a problem
