Is this Dolphins defense the real deal?

IMHO, no, our defense, while boasting some excellent players, is not elite.

We still have holes. Young CB's will be exposed. LB's poor coverage skills will be exposed. Mediocre run defense on the edges aside from Hayes. No real FS. Not many takeaways.

While all of those things will hurt us, it is the lack of takeaways that will eventually hurt the worst. It's absence will feel like death by a thousand cuts.

Timmons and Manualuga are not gonna be here long. They are bandages. We need to draft LB, along with OL. Don't need qb just yet. RT with Moore backing up should be good enough for couple more years. Address LB and OL in next draft. May be adding a TE if a good one still available.
In all, I am extremely happy we addressed the run problem during the off season, and fixed it right away.
Not many teams can fix their problem in one year. Hats off to our front office, wait! did I just say that.
If Timmons keeps this play up Miami will keep him for as long as he wants..

Last years defense personal was pretty awful taking into consideration all the injuries we endured and we somehow ended up with a 10 6 record, amazing.
It could end being pretty important especially for Cutler making his first come back from a 17 decit win in his career. Confidence is a huge part of winning, and though Cutler and the offense have short comings, confidence many instances trumps talent along with a good coach which we have.

Put NFL quality LB's on the field and bam, the D suddenly is Top 10.

And how long have we neglected filling this roster with a complete LB core? Since Zach?

I will say this again, the formula is simple, the results are proven.... yet we still pridefully stand in defiance of basic football logic and ignore basic, fundamental strategies.

In about 20 more years, we will finally finish building our OL so that side of the ball can enjoy the empowerment of skill players through competent and consistent run & pass blocking.

Run the ball and stop the run. That's where team building starts.

Until they play like that week in and week out throughout the season I won't hold my breath. Yes they have done a good job to this point but we all know what happens when we get our hopes up.

This seems oddly similar to the season we had a top five defense for the first half of the season but finished in the bottom half of the league

Well we are still kind of thin. There are several injuries that could derail this thing quickly.

Doesn't it apply to every team in NFL? Every team is one two major injuries from major disaster season.

Strong up the middle...oldie but goodie that still applies. Good 4 man pass rush, which is essential. Some good blitzers in the back 7 when called upon. Good team speed. Rally to the ball attitude. Young CBs will have their struggles and I'd love to upgrade the slot corner position, but most importantly we need to force more TOs to be elite. Foundation to be elite though...

I would keep Timmons for next year.

I've seen enough to know they can win games for Miami. I wouldn't call them "elite" but they are top 10 for sure.

I would say yes as long as they avoid any major injuries. I think they will only improve, esp the young guys getting more experience. McDonald will help solidify the secondary at the right time. Ravens haven't been to potent on offense at home, just need to hold steady the next two games.

Elite is just a word. As long as the defense keeps us in games they are super elite in my book!

I think the talent is there to be MUCH better than last year and I think Burke seems better than Vance. BUT I'm going to turn counterintuitive. I think Jets game will be a good test. Not because they're dangerous, but because they're not. Miami has a VERY bad habit of playing up to good teams and down to 'less food's teams. If this D is the 'real deal,' they'll play like they did against ATL. If they're not, they'll regress. GOOD D's don't let bad Os have good days.
