49ers, Alex Smith agree to terms on six-year deal.

(July 25, 2005) -- Alex Smith and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a six-year, $51 million contract. He will be introduced at a press conference early on July 26.

Smith will receive $24 million in guaranteed money -- a 20 percent increase over what Eli Manning, the top overall choice in the 2004 NFL Draft, got.

Early today, one NFL general manager said Monday he was told a Smith deal would occur tonight or the next morning. Heading into the weekend, before Smith's agent Tom Condon flew to the Bay Area, the two sides were 80 percent done with the deal.

Now they 49ers have the foundation of their franchise signed for the future.

It must be nice to be 21 and have $24 million in your pocket, huh?

Thats a lot of money:eek:

It's funny how Rookies are getting all this guaranteed money coming into the league and proven guys can't get a deal (Edge, Shaun Alexander, ect) and when they do they get cut before they see any real money. The market has changed. Your better off being the # 1 pick in the draft then a top free agent on the market!

Ridiculous. Smith would've been possibly the 4th QB selected in '04, and he gets more than Eli? Man. $24 mil is just an astronomical amount of money for a kid who hasn't even taken a training camp snap yet.
