QB Ricky Ray signs with New York Jets after standout

February 27, 2004
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Ricky Ray is heading for the New York Jets after leading the Eskimo players to the CFL's Grey Cup last fall.

The Eskimos said Friday that Ray has signed with Jets, two days before the CFL deadline for players to sign NFL prospects.

``The Eskimo players and coaches take pride in helping Ricky fulfil his dream of playing in the NFL,'' Eskimos president and CEO Hugh Campbell said in a statement. ``Ricky Ray is a tremendous young man with a bright future and we wish him great success.''

The Jets did not immediately confirm the signing.

Ray, 24 completed 348 of 515 attempts for 4,640 yards with 35 touchdowns in 2003. He worked out for the Jets two weeks ago.

He would likely compete with second-year man Brooks Bollinger for the No. 2 job behind Chad Pennington. Forty-year-old Vinny Testaverde, the backup for the last two seasons, said Thursday that he is considering retirement

yeah that was a dumb move for him...unless pennington goes down again, he wont get much playing time at all

funny thing is his agent said a month of so ago that he wouldn't come into the NFL for a #3 gig.....although it looks like he is :) lol guess he figured a pay raise is nice and he needs to get into the NFL circle.....who knows, maybe next year we can pick him up as a #3 to be our starting QB !!! At least he has more playing experience then AJ

Think about it this way. If Pennington goes down again, the Jets will have either Bollinger or Ray at QB. And we're worried about our QB situation? Yikes :happydrin

In the CFL, which is akin to a YMCA 40 and over men's league..

it was only meant to be humorous.....but hell...playing some flag football games would still give you more experience then warming a bench!!!
