Here is the good news: Cutler is 4-1 in his career against Tampa Bay. That alone should inspire confidence with the Dolphins, especially after Cutler beat the Buccaneers with less talented offenses in Chicago (3-1) and Denver (1-0).

While his record against the Buccaneers is good, his stats are not. Cutler’s most recent outing against Tampa Bay last November was disastrous, as Chicago lost 36-10. He was 16 of 30 for 182 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a lost fumble that led to a safety. Cutler’s three-turnover game led to a season-low 4.0 QBR and 55.1 passer rating.

Last year’s game is the best gauge because Tampa Bay has many of the same players and same defensive scheme. It also is an accurate measure of where Cutler, 34, is at this stage of his career. The Bucs will draw from last season’s defensive performance and implement it Sunday.

Additional numbers to consider with Cutler against Tampa Bay:

  • In two meetings in 2014 and 2015 -- both wins by the Bears -- Cutler averaged 5.3 yards per attempt, nearly two yards below his career average (7.23 yards).

  • Cutler upped that number slightly to 6.07 yards per attempt during a loss to Tampa Bay last season, but that included a 50-yard "Hail Mary" touchdown before halftime that padded those numbers.

  • In five games against Tampa Bay, Cutler has thrown five touchdowns, four interceptions and has one lost fumble.

  • Cutler’s career QBR against the Buccaneers is 43.56 on a 100-point scale.
Tampa Bay’s strategy against Cutler was clear: Take away the deep plays. Look for more of the same when the Dolphins host the Buccaneers on Sunday. It will be up to Cutler, who is aggressive, to remain patient against Tampa Bay.

Either way if the Phins can't win these early games and not give away should be wins. If they get off to a slow start you can kiss the season goodbye. Thier strength of schedule will not allow for a slow start. Oakland, Kansas City (December in KC), Denver, Atlanta and the Patriots. If this team can't win home games against the Bucs this is going to be a very long season.

Putting Grant Parker Stills and Landry on the field with The Train could be an interesting show to watch... Like to see Grant take a jet sweep or two
and WR screen (not to mention the HR threat on every play)! Bottom line, it seems fair to say this team needs to win by scoring 30+ points and IMO Cutler can deliver the ball to open receivers -- tho I am sure Gase will want to stay "balanced" and not ask Cutler to carry the team.

As always, our OL is critical -- and if we can provide solid protection and open some lanes for Ajayi -- we will be very hard to stop.

I know I'm being a tad (or more) optimistic but I believe Grant's emergence will be HUGE for our overall offensive production.
The kids speed and quicks are just INSANE!

These type of articles never make any sense to me. No team is the same from last year let alone years ago so any attempt at direct comparisons are false.

The only thing it proves is that BSPN pushes bull **** narratives along with their meaningless QBR formula.

Truth is >>> there's an entire industry out there dedicated to this kind of crap nonsense BS under the guise of journalism.

Way too many pigs feeding from the same trough.

My opinion. Of course.

Not the best gauge....because this Miami team is not the 2016 Bears...and a quarterback doesn't face a team by himself...or he is in trouble.

I'm giving Cutler a clean slate. He might light it up. He might **** it up.

The line is unproven. If we know this, Gase certainly knows. I trust he will plan accordingly.

This should not be difficult. Cutler NEVER had a plethora of high octane targets like he has now. Or a sledgehammer running back to boot.

I'm pretty sure that had something to do with him hiring on.

Why do writers keep saying he didn't have as talented a supporting cast in Chicago? Didn't he take the field w Marshall, Jeffery, Forte and Bennett?

Utterly pointless stat. Even more pointless than usual when it is a bears v bucs stat and has nothing to do with Miami

Taking away the deep plays against Miami will take huge effort and commitment on the Buc's side considering Miami will more time then not have players like Parker, and Stills who can each take it deep at any play, then add to that on those rare occasions where Gase will want to see their Defensive Coordinator age prematurely, players like Grant, and Drake to add that much more speed...commit too much to stopping the deep plays, and be ready to get eaten alive by Ajayi, who has a bad habit of taking handoffs deep when there is not enough players to contain him.

As long as Cutler doesn't make any big mistakes, we should be in the game, all game long, and in position to win it at the end.
