Posted this in the free agency thread but might have been better here.
Albert Wilson was a dangerous, speedy receiver for the Chiefs in 2017 and has flashed that ability in previous years. As much as Alex Smith was improved this past season for the Chiefs, the bulk of the targets were going to his two biggest weapons, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Wilson saw the ball come his way just 56 times over the year, even though he caught a greater percentage of them than Hill did, and he broke almost double the number of tackles after the catch (15 compared to eight from Hill).
The place that Hill’s presence really showed up was in limiting the opportunities Wilson had to make an impact deep down the field. Hill was targeted on deep passes (20-plus air yards) 24 times over the season, while Wilson had the next-highest figure (five) among Chiefs wide outs. If he lands with a team that gives him a chance to be a bigger factor in the offense – and his former offensive coordinator is now head coach of the Chicago Bears, who desperately need receiver help – he could break out into a much more significant threat."
I like the sigining, I have been reading a lot about him. Wish we paid a bit less, 6mil would have been better but hey its Free Agency and not my money...
I bet it’s only essentially a 2y, $10M deal.
I'm not hating on this signing yet but it sounds like damn near a fifth of our salary cap will be going towards Albert Wilson, Kiko Alonso, Andre branch and a defensive tackle that is no longer on the team
Just ask yourself this question. Do you think anyone on the current Dolphins brain trust is smarter than Andy Reid?
Ask yourself that honestly.
With Kelce, Hunt and Hill?
Every last team in the NFL should have at least 3 skill players on their team than Albert Wilson. That's the point.
Let's not pretend that Landry routinely caught 9 TDs every year.
Fair point I suppose, though the Andy Reid decline may be starting again like it did in Philly. My take on Wilson being let go is that he’s too similar to Tyreek Hill. I’ll wait to comment about the contract until the guarantees and yearly breakdown is available
I guess this shows how bad this year's draft is at WR and Caroo and Parker are?
Let's not pretend Albert Wilson is that good, either.
and the Dolphins had this?
When Andy did not use Hunt a lot which he did often and lost those games, where was Albert? Not to mention Alex Smith does not key in on anyone he spreads the ball around a lot.
We don't. That doesn't mean you reach and sign the Albert Wilsons of the world to 8million a year. It's insanity.
it also renders your point about Landry moot, Wilson scored 3 TDs and 550 yards on 60 targets, care to do the math for 160 targets?
Give him a chance for God's sake
Looks like a decent player but exactly how did this guy deserve Kenny Stills type money? Can't wait to see the GTD portion. No wonder Miami was the front runner already. Nobody else likely offered anything close.
The guy averaged 386 yard per game and 1.75 TD's.
Stills got a 4 year deal. I'm guessing this kid was just handed 16M GTD and a 5M signing bonus.
im ok with the player and giving him chance but not at that $$$$$
quite a shift from :
ladry is heart and soul of this team, he is one if not the best slot receiver in the NFL!
Landry is a drama queen that freelanced and needed to be force feeded and now we have a slot receiver that is faster, better, smarter.
WADR it smells a lot of rationalization
anyway, I hope we are not done with fa: it's the time to find some injured te or something like that
There's a reason Jarvis Landy garners that many targets and Albert Wilson doesn't.
Jarvis Landry gets open and is the ultimate chain mover. He's extremely adept in finding the soft spot in the zone, and making a play.
They aren't in the same league or universe as football players. Let's not even mention the other aspects of the game like blocking support in the run game.
yeah, I think we just discussed why.
Also, I notice 32 of Wilson's 42 receptions were for 1st down, sounds like a chain mover to me...
except one football player you haven't even seen play. Landry is a slot that runs a 4.8 40, Wilson is a slot that runs a sub 4.5 and broke just as many tackles in half the attempts. Rumor has it the guaranteed money is only 12 million on top of that.
You are against a signing in which you didn't know the contract details and never saw the player on the field. It really is laughable.
LOL. Homer it up, if you will my man.
Like I said, if you think anyone on the Dolphins brain trust is smarter than Andy Reid, you're fooling yourself.
I'm not saying I even like the player, i am just withholding judgement till i see how the contract is structured.
The annual average is still too high. This is a mediocre 3rd wide receiver. It's a complete waste of resources.
This deal is simply sooooo Dolphins. And those who are trying to mindlessly rationalize it are hilarious.
Not only injured but old as well....as in soon to be 31 years old and having his best year 7 years ago with 528 yards and 5 TD. Please someone wake me up and tell me it was just a dream. Ed Dickson soon to be the next $7M FA TE bust.
almost as hilarious as mindlessly bashing it right?
There is also I have seen him extensively and he has not stood out anywhere he has been, he is not a starting level NFL player.
Reid traded away the best corner in football. I say he’s pretty retarded.
The Wilson slander and Landry praise is hilarious to me. Their the exact same type of player without the excessive amount of targets or Landry’s dumb juke to nowhere move.
Landry isn’t a irreplaceable star wr. He’s a slot that thought he was a legit star. Won’t be hard to move on.
Jalen Ramsey never played for the Chiefs.
And Andy Reid's career coaching record suggests he's quite competent at what he does.
Jeff Darlington on Joe Rose Show:
"Adam Gase is a smart guy but he needs help building the roster and Mike Tannenbaum is not that guy. He's not going to back Gase up when things get rough and they start pointing fingers".
8 million a year for Albert friggin Wilson is not a good use of resources. Sue me.
It won't really be 8 million per, just wait for the contract details man. If its only 12 million guaranteed than its perfectly fine.
Exactly my fear. We have a really good coach for the first time since Shula, and we’re going to lose him because T-Baum is an assface who sucks at his job and Ross refuses to fire him. Being a Miami Dolphins fan is an excercise in masochism most times.
100% agree. I sure hope Gase doesn't let Tannenbum scapegoat him into getting fired first. At the very least he needs to take Tannenbum down with him.
and the power struggle begins.....
The Chiefs changed QB’s which is why they are changing what they want at WR. Smith was a very accurate short and midrange QB, and Wilson provided a good security blanket. Their new QB Mahomes is a big arm, air raid style QB who has issues with the touch passes, but will burn you deep. The Chiefs signing Watson and jettisoning Wilson is catering to their new QB’s strengths.
Jalen Ramsey isn’t the best corner on his own team. Bouye has that locked up.
Peters is just as good in coverage with rare ball skills. I’ll take him 10/10 times.
I like the player a lot, and the contract seems reasonable.
Here's my question: Which current Dolphins WR is this signing an indictment of? Parker? Grant? Carroo? All 3?
