We all know by now that Ricky is tuning his back on football, and the Dolphins.
We all feel the resentment, the dispair, the betrayal. We all wonder why and how someone like Ricky Williams can toss away all that God given talent, and how he can waste what would have been an illustrious career. I know I'm not alone in feeling the anger at what he's done... to wait until the worst possible moment to make this irresponsible move. It's not his decision to retire that angers me... it's the timing. The Dolphins have been very good to him, and for him these last couple of years, he couldn't have done a better job at showing his lack of appreciation, or loyalty. I can only stand here and shake my head. Is the season completely lost? Well... perhaps, perhaps not... we all have to wait and see. Is griping about Ricky the purpose of this seemingly redundant thread? No.

This all comes down to why I, and those like me, are fans. It hurts the TEAM. I, like so many of you, am a fan of the Miami Dolphins. First and foremost. Have I been a fan of Ricky? Heck yeah! who among us hasn't? However, it's been because he was a Dolphin that I was a fan of his. I've heard this statement many times, by many members of this site:

"I'm a fan of the team, not just a player"

THAT statement is why I created this thread... something I don't often do.
The fact that Ricky is gone, has but ONE single positive outcome that I can see in the near future. That is that the bandwagoners, the fans-come-latley, the people who "became" Dolphin fans because of Ricky... will finally pack up their carpet bags, and head off to a different team.
This will thin the crowd... the true fans remaining... those that were not true fans will dissapear into the woodwork as fast as they came.
For all his alledged negativity, and controversial posts on this site, there is one member here who IMO stands out like a beacon... a posterboy for fans, if you will... A shining example of someone who will always remain true to the TEAM, no matter who is running the football... is Fin-atic. Fans like him, while not always popular in their views (Lord knows, I haven't always agreed with him), will be the LAST people to stop being a fan, because one bone-headed superstar called it quits. ( hate singling anyone out... but this guy really is a die-hard fan...sorry Fin-atic)
Others... and I'm sure we'll all see who they are... will simply find another team to root for. To them, I say Good Riddance. It will be nice to not have those "fans" around anymore...
As for me... I've been a Dolphin fan since long before Ricky Williams was born... and will continue to be a Dolphin fan until the day I die... no matter how good, nor how bad the upcoming season looks, I'll always have hope, I'll always cheer them on, and I'll always wear my Aqua and Orange with pride.
Those of you who are of the same mind... stick around, we have a LOT to talk about, wonder about, and hope for...
Is the title of this thread directed at Ricky?... no...it's for those that aren't with us... the bandwagon stops here... time for you to get off... and stay off!

Such a true article, very nicely written!

I'm mad about Ricky, of course, but once the initial shock left I could put this into true perspective. One player doesn't make a team, and as important as Williams was, this can't kill us.

I'm optimistic this will make our beloved Dolphins stronger.

Same as you, I was a die hard Dolphins fan before Ricky, and I'll be one after and until the day I'm cryogenically frozen. I'll wear my jerseys with pride ( not 34, nope, I'm getting 84), and I'll support the Phins just like always.

    Great read.

I don't understand why Rikki cut his dreads if he was going to retire?

The fact he cut his dreads shows he is not altogether with us.

Miami is all amped about the Shaq signing. Maybe ricky thought this was a good time to weasel out of town. He thought everybody would be distracted. Ive been a dolphin
fan for 13 years. i love them and i hate them. i think thats how any real dolphin fan feels about them. but ive never seen this team like this before. its like a circus. except the clowns are running the show.

Well, I guess saying the offense is going to be totally revamped is an understatement. New OC, new QB, whatever new RB. Um, change is good?????????? Sigh.

what we fail to remember as Dolphin fans is that we had 7 (?) good seasons. I'm sure Cardinal fans would die to have our team, and watch it dismantle like this. We've been spoiled for years, and like all good teams in the NFL, they have to regroup sometime.

What Ricky did was selfish, immature, and just plan, wrong. As a child, I was taught if you are part of team, you do not let your team down, if you are suppose to showup for a game, a practise or whatever, you do it, because you were part of something and it wasn't right to let them down. I am sure what ricky is doing is what is best for him, and seems thats the way most people see the world these days, its all about me and what you can do for me, and throw them away when they don't benefit you anymore. Ricky used the dolphins and threw them away when he was done, with them. Eddie George left the Titans this week, and if Ricky would have given us the common courtesy of retiring, at the end of the year, before the draft or atleast last week, we could have replaced him, he has left us in bad spot, and if you are fan of his, you shouldn't be, he is setting a horible example, and I always thought he was one of the better guys in football. Those of you who have kids, please teach them the value of being part of team it should mean something, and things like this won't happen in the future.

    No faith man?

I don't know about regrouping but I believe we are gonna find a new back, have a hell of a training camp, and make another run. Rebuilding year my ***.

In Wanny we trust. At least for this year.;)

    Cheers !!!!!!

I have been lucky enought to be a dolphin fan for nearly 13 years now. I am also a detriot lions fan, even with out barry, and always want them to do well. Ricky was never the team too me and I'm glad to see others step up and say something.

Am I going to return my season tickets, NO. Am I going to hate the phins, NO. I am however going to try and return my RW jersey for a different one

The dolphins have a good history of winning and a decent player base. This change while quite infuriating, opens some new doors; for example:

    1. More salary cap room
    2. No one can use ricky as a crutch in the QB challenge/contoversy
    3. Even lower expectations for the dolphins which means less preperation (to a point)

I'm sure others could come up with more but #1 and #2 interest me the most.

The thing that concerns me the most is how the TEAM will take this, I would hate to see those guys get bummed out and it affect them. I'm not sure if any of them read the site but guys:

I will bleed Aqua and Orange till the day I DIE!!!!!! Win this one cause they think you can't here's to a great season :chug:

    awing --- over and out

Even though I am from a rival team, it actualy saddens me a bit to see Ricky go as well. I will not rub it in as I know this is something that true fans really do not feel good about, and its not worth rubbing it in. Miami was the Patriots best competition last year and the games were intese to watch, that Overtime game had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. I wish what happened to the Dolphins on no team, and I hope it does not hurt your team so bad that you are no longer competitive. Dont lose the faith however, because 1 person does not make a team, football is a team sport and if everyone does their part you can still accomplish anything. Having a running game is a good weapon to have, but not neccessary to succeed. The patriots won 2 superbowls with an awful running attack. Miami has some good things going for them, they have 2 great WRs, however the QB situation is a bit iffy. Their defense is still solid, and you can still trade Ogonleye and maybe get a RB out of the deal?

What some of you are forgetting however is that the NFL is a business, it is not your highschool team, or some pop warner team. Its a business, and the players are the Employees. Ricky, granted his timing was not exactly ideal for the team, has every right to quit football if his heart is no longer in the game. If you had a choice like his where you already had a good ammount of money to live the rest of your life on, would you continue to do something that does not make you happy like football? Would you even want him on your team if his heart is not into the game, and he isnt going to give it 110% on every play? A lot was asked of Ricky Williams when he was a Dolphin, didnt he almost have 400 carries in a season last year or the year before? That is ALOT of beatings to take during a season, perhaps that is what lead to what some would call dementia.. He was only 27 which is suprising he retired so early, howevr you gotta wonder how much longer he could have gone taking the ammount of carries he did, and carrying the Dolphins offense every year. 3.7 yards per carry isnt all that good anywyas, which is what i believe ricky williams stats were for last year. You guys will move on, im sure, this offseason has been quite dismal for you, but look at it this way, if they conquer all of this and go on to make it into the playoffs, then it will just feel that much better when they succeed. Miami is a good team, regardless of whether or not Ricky is playing or not.

I felt ****ty when Lawyer Milloy was cut a few days before the opening game, never mind that he went to Buffalo. The patriots locker room im sure had some bad moral going into that game, losing their defensive captain, someone that everyone on the defense looked to as a leader, and was now gone, but they overcame, and the season just felt that much better. Granted its a little tougher to lose someone in a skilled position like RB, but it does not break your team. Now I would be lieing if I said I wasnt a little more confident in the Patriots chances this year since we no longer have to deal with Ricky Williams 2 times a year, but I honestly would rather face him those 2 games a year, because it makes the games more exciting, and more rewarding. This is a big hit to the NFL, to lose a top 10 rusher to retirement, but from what it sounds like from the stories, it was inevitable. Keep cheering on your team, dont lose hope, never give up, if anything this gives you more of a reason to cheer louder and harder for your team this year, to help them through this season, because that is what football is all about. Nothing revolves around 1 person, nothing.... No 1 man makes or breaks a team, unless of course your Pay-me-a-ton Manning.

Our defense won't change, and our offense never really won us any games anyway, the only thing this effects is our offensive philosophy and my Fantasy Football team.

I hope he knows how much this is going to cost him. Falure to perform clauses are air tight in NFL contracts. ESPN is reporting he could be on the hook for over $3 million. That's a lot of $$$ to be an international bum.

To answer you question, I don't think Feeley is the second coming of Tom Brady and Belicheck isn't our coach.

Harrison, please understand. Our frustration is getting bigger by the second. But thanks for the classy post.

I agree, Warf. It's well overdue for true fans to stand up and hold the water. Maybe we'll go 0-16, I don't care. I'll be watching every single snap of this season - Ricky Williams or not, we're still the Miami Dolphins...

    always in control. ;)

Please don't listen to that guy, hes been posting only today and is just trying to make a joke of everything. If you look at his other post hes going around pretending to be gay and his partner knows more about football than anything but is ashamed of him.:shakeno: Im suprised he hasn't been banned yet but regardless your post was very well written and I hope you stick around because your input would be highly valued around here. Thanks for the support from one football fan to another.

Wharf... that was a killer writeup. I've been a true fan since I formed a memory, and every year it's been the same. No Super Bowl. The fact that this kook waits a week before training camp kills me. "I wanna take more pictures. I wanna tour Asia. I can no longer handle the restrictions that this sport puts on my life." Hey RICKY! Boo F'n Hoo! Cry me a river. Go do what you want. A man has the right to do so. BUT NOT A WEEK BEFORE TRAINING CAMP, YOU SELFISH PR**K! You don't make this team. The ultimate thing that burns my a** though, is the fact that we dumped Minor. The guy was a solid back. So now we're stuck with who? However, there is a funny irony to story. Ricky just did to Wanny what he has done to the fans the last 2 playoff-less seasons. Stuck a big one right up his backside. Good one you stupid hippie! :fire:

I am so a typical dolphin fan, i'm just not familiar with posting stuff. I love rikki and I love the dolphins, they will win it all this year even without rikki.

The reason i started posting now is because of them rikki news, didn't you have first day posting talk about football?

harisoned is as loser patsy fan who is just trying to rub it in, and i am mad you support him and not me. I'm standing up for us:mad:

i am done with you, i won't respond to your childish posts!

    Nice Post Warf

I agree. I wont miss the fair weather fans.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the team responds to this "crisis"...sometimes things like this cause a team to unify and raise thier level of play. Lets see what happens. Either way, Super bowl win or non playoff season, or somewhere in between, I'm a DOLFAN!~

Nice post Wharf... i agree totally. I am very upset with this whole thing because it was plain and simply retarded!! lol. I am one of those "positive thinking" fans so i refused to believe the "season is over". Everything happens for a reason and apparently his heart and mind was not in the game anymore so i wouldnt want him here with that mentality anyway! I will hope and believe that someone will step up and do their job to replace him like Minor, or Morris. Maybe we will even get Robert Edwards back and see what he is about since we only let him go because we had Ricky in the first place. We still have a great defense, some great receivers, the o-line is shaping up and we have to wait to see on the qb... all in all, its been a horrible offseason, but anything can happen! Fans should be fans of a TEAM not a player and that is one thing i will always be... A FAN OF THE MIAMI DOLPHINS! Anyone that wants to give up and move on because ONE player left, so be it... happy trails!

Hey Harrison37 don't worry about a couple of losers! I thought you post was very insiteful and actually picked me up a bit! It does suck that he's gone, but your right 1 player doesn't make a team and if we can over come this then it will make things that much better! Who knows without Ricky maybe the O won't rely on the running game so much and they will be a more balanced Offence! MAYBE! Got to stay positive!

Either way good post and keep coming back! This site could use more objective fans no matter who they root for!

I wholeheartily agree Wharf but it is almost like Ricky wanted to screw the organization, Team, Players, and most definitely us fans !!!

The timing couldn't have been MORE wrong ... 1 week before t-c opens  .....

Ricky has the right to do what is best for him and his family but he was part of a team and to contemplate retiring and wait this long to inform the f-o with his decision is completely selfish !!

This imo was / is [IMG]
