IMO one of the problems is how often the field gets used. The U plays on it as well as big events are held there. They should just go to a turf if they want the stadium to get lots of use. Today's turf is a good option and it would improve team speed ... Miami needs help there as well.

It’s almost as if it gets a lot hotter in Miami than Green Bay or Germany.

The problem is the relative lack of air circulation. Even on an 80 degree day it’s still 100+ on the ground there. You add in grow lamps to make up for the shade and it’s even hotter. Plants will die when exposed to just those conditions much less the wear and tear of multiple games.

You do realize it would improve the other teams speed as well...right?

That makes sense -- too much heat, too much shade, and too little air circulation. Those three variables are front and center every time I enter the stadium. The shade is a good thing for fans but not the field.

It was impossible to watch that Green Bay game last night and not be struck by the terrific field conditions, compared to anywhere but especially to our own predicament.

The field is not heavily used. That excuse is not valid. The Orange Bowl had high school games all season long and the field held up great. Miami High used the Orange Bowl as its home field and many other games were played there.

This season in particular the activity has been light. The Dolphins missed one home game. The Canes have three consecutive games now but they went from September 23 to October 14 without playing at home. It's ridiculous that the field has been so incompetent thus far.

Bottom line the engineers guessed, and guessed poorly. Ross spent so much time arguing over finances he didn't pay enough attention to what he was building.

The Dolphins brass seemingly cared more about sticking the late afternoon sun into the faces of the visiting team bench than whether or not their new patchwork could actually grow grass.

Plus the concerts over the summer put them behind the eight-ball before the season even started...

I can verify that having caught a TD pass there in HS playing against Miami High. Coolest thing ever and the fact that there were only 5 or 6 thousand fans in a stadium that held 70,000 all sitting around the 50 yard line did not take anything away from it :)

    Back to the field condition.

I believe they have two options:

    1) Less events meaning less wear and tear on natural grass. (Don't see this happening)
    2) Bring in synthetic.

It has been brought up that synthetic would get incredibly hot in the summer heat. To that, I would say that the billionaire Ross can pay to have cooling figured out underneath the field. There are homes with heated floors, granted a football stadium field is much much larger, but I would imagine it is within the abilities of human achievement to create a cooling system under the field. Lines pumping cold water through tubes to lower the temperature of the sub materials below the synthetic grass, etc. Nope, I don't know how it would work. But I can't imagine it beyond our capabilities, nor the pocket book of Ross. I HATED watching the Fins play on Marlin baseball fields. We had the worst field. Now we finally get a designated football field, and it still sucks. Got to get this fixed.

Ross just hired the wrong ground keeping company. Any college student living in dorm can give him expert advice.

    I'm optimistic this will work.

Sounds like there was probably a contract with a sod vendor and Miami had to stay with them until that was up.
Now they switched to someone else with a different grass and they have the rest of this season to see how that goes.
At least they seem to be trying.

I am beyond amateur, but I know what grass works in my climate and even which areas of my yard require different grasses, due to more shade, etc.
I'm sure the grounds keeping crew was well aware of the issues long ago, but they were stuck with it.

Notre Dame at Miami on Saturday night at 8pm eastern. We will see what the field looks like and how it holds up.

So there is a problem. It will get fixed. Ross has done a lot to the stadium. You should go to it, even if only to see the type of toilet paper.

Catch that call out from the announcers- ‘Dolphins haven’t had this type of crowd all year that the Canes have had these last two weeks’.

Ross must be so happy. Sure shows the stadium can rock and have potential- if we can improve the product.

It's been pretty damn loud tonight. If we could actually put a team on the field good enough to get a home playoff game sometime, it should be quite the madhouse. Sadly, we could be waiting a while for that though. :(

That field was excellent tonight. Instead of steady obvious decline like the prior versions, this one remained virtually identical throughout. The sod crew didn't show up after warmups. Not needed, unlike last week. Brief appearance at halftime but only half strength and more or less looking for places to fix, instead of too many places to fix in such a short time.

This problem might be gone. We'll have to see how it holds up under heavy rain but based on tonight's evidence I think paspalum was the ruin.

If that's the case I don't understand how good sod wasn't the priority, if the topic is sod. They weren't putting down gravel out there and debating between gravel and sod. Instead of replacing the field so many times you would think someone would have asked earlier -- is this sod okay?

Bermuda is tough stuff. I know that from golf courses and my own back yard. I planted some bermuda for chipping practice purposes years ago and it has spread all over the place. Spread where I didn't want it. Now during summer growing season my electric mower has no trouble with the higher St Augustine but stalls repeatedly over darn bermuda.

I have no idea why bermuda was abandoned in the first place. Sounds like somebody made a happy sod adjustment that wasn't necessary.

    Regardless, good field ahead.

BTW, the crowd was so loud tonight my ears were still ringing 2 hours after the game ended. My seats are low upper deck so I receive full impact from the contrived roof.

Sounds like you know a lot more than I do....am still concerned about the fact that 25-30% of the field gets no sun at all this time of year (check out the time-lapse options on the webcam at the end of a day), is that going to be a problem?

The fans only come when there’s a good product to watch in Miami it seems. The stadium was dead the past few years when the U was irrelevant. Now it’s alive again when they’re undefeated this late in the season.

Until the upcoming Noon game against Virginia, where there will probably be half the crowd. Regardless, good to see the U back!

Would be pretty stupid for the stadium to be empty regardless of who the Hurricanes play. For crying out loud they're 9-0 and won their division. To not show up and support them with a full stadium would be stupid.

Noise has always been made by human beings, not bricks. Always surprises me some don't understand that

Though some fanbases make noise even when the team isnt having its best game in decades lol

Keep in mind, we arent getting the same amount of rain we were getting earlier in the year.

That said, it is looking MUCH better. We will see how it works next September.

I only saw one slip yesterday, and that was Stills trying to hit the breaks on yet another Cutler underthrown pass. Turned into a fantastic catch.
