Hayden Fox's "Man Crush", Underrated and Overrated List

Jordan and Shazier at LB in the nickel defense is exciting! Shazier is a football player with outstanding physical talents unmatched at his position! He alone would make this defense play to what we expect as a top 10 defense. He is exactly what we need.

I hope that Greg Robinson is considered overrated. He's probably the only offensive lineman that I'd be happy with Miami drafting at #19.

Id draft Jeremy Hill and not look back. 3rd and 1s suddenly become makeable. Give me this power back to go with Miller and Moreno.

Lets see some other posters man crush and overrated lists.

Hayden, you did a great job. I agree with much of it. Guys I like a lot include Allen Robinson, Cooks, Mettenberger, West, Moncrief, Sefarian-Jenkins, Zack Martin, Billy Turner, Skov, Shazier, Van Noy, the guard from Canada (based on reports of course), Mewhort, Daniel McCullers, and Schofield.

Personally, I think Miami needs a move guard, a tackle, a lb who can diagnose, a big d tackle, a power running back, and a red zone target. I'd love to come out of the draft with that grocery list and my player list sort of follows that to a large extent.

Having said all that, what I really believe in is best player available. And if that guy is Cooks, so be it. Take him. It's a mistake to take a pedestrian right tackle in the first round over a difference maker like Cooks. Look at Cooks' hips and quickness in a phone booth. He can get open on a dime, not necessarily just with long speed but with sharp quickness. He is a rare talent and a difference maker. You can still get a tackle in the second or third round like Mewhort or Schofield or James and a guard like Turner or the kid from Canada.

I was watching the show Caught in the Draft on NFL Network for the year 1994. The KC Chiefs under Carl Peterson were on the clock and the program let us look under the tent. The Chiefs with Carl and Marty Schottenheimer and others in their brass had complete tunnel vision for a running back. With the benefit of hindsight you could see they were selecting between a series of uninspired mediocrities. They picked Greg Hill. He was out of the league in a few years.

If you stick to BPA as a GM you will come out smelling like a rose because you can point to your track record of good picks over time. It would be idiotic for Miami to force feed a positional need over a better player. Besides, the delta between a right tackle you'd get at 19 and one you'd get at 50 is so marginal it won't make a difference in wins and losses whereas a Cooks for instance could be a true difference maker.

This team has so many holes and lacks so many good players, while this us such an unusually deep draft, this may be an ideal draft to trade down a couple of times and pick up extra picks (while in a normal draft you may focus on getting more premium selections).

That segment on the 1994 Chiefs looked bad only because so seldom are we treated to back room discussions like that. I guarantee there are countless similar examples, even today. Glorified coin flips.

It reminds me of people wanting to believe that Nevada sportsbooks are ultra sophisticated. Nope. I was there in the '80s and '90s and I've been behind the counter recently, visiting friends who still hold those jobs. Absolutely nothing has changed.

Hayden and others - check out OLB Jordan Tripp from Montana. I know that we have many bigger needs than OLB but this guy is very tall (6'3") and very athletic and could easily replace someone like Austin Spitler or Jason Trusnik on special teams, maybe he can be a starter. I think he's that good - his speciality is forcing fumbles and making fumble recoveries. He's a bargain because he's coming out of a place like Montana. If he gets to the 4th round - he's a steal. The team that drafts him is a team that probably has a GM who has an eye for talent and value. I'm pretty certain Tripp will be a very good NFL player. Yes, I have a man crush for him.

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is 6'5" 315 lbs with superior athleticism than most of the other OG prospects. He is French Canadian and only started speaking some English 4 years ago. He is extremely smart - studying pre-med at McGill College - a top Medical School.
He has met with 20 NFL teams and 6 attended his pro day (yes, the Dolphins were one of the 6). Miami also invited him to Miami.
My hunch is that we are very interested in him. I don't know when he's expected to go.

Footnote - McGill University is the top rated university in Canada and is rated in the top 25 universities in the world.
Conclusion - LDT must be very smart to be able to meet the academic requirements of pre-med

Thanks, SpikeTex. I do not recall the exact sources (perhaps Barry Jackson and Armando as I think they are who clued me into him), but my impression is 3rd or 4th round.

Chris Boreland

wont be able to be great in big games. OC's will just make sure they put a second level big body on him for key plays. His size is a concern for the next level. his neck is no match for Zach. He does very well moving through blocks but overall will be avg. unless his instincts and film study take it to another level.

I would not pick him at 50. There will be too many other impact players on OL, TE, and WR sitting there for us. Or RB if we still want one.

I have my heart set on getting XSF - (Xavier Su'a-Filo), but if LDT - (Laurent Duvernay-Tardif) is really good, then just maybe we have a lower cost alternative and can use the top pick on a WR playmaker eg Marqise Lee/Brandin Cooks or mike linebacker eg CJ Mosely. Make no mistake, LDT is very very smart to be 4 years into pre-med at a top Canadian Medical School and playing football at the same time. This is pretty unusual in many ways:
(a) The sheer amount of time spent combining medical studies at a top Medical School and also training for football. He's probably smarter than John Jerry.
(b) I know that Tannehill wants to become an orthopedic surgeon, but very few med students want to play football. LDT has a career as a doctor ahead of him. Last year he did pediatric work in a Tennessee children's hospital.
(c) French Canadians from Montreal are generally hard wired to playing hockey. He's still learning English.
(d) Doing better than most of the US College O-linemen in the combine drills. He must be a natural freak to emerge from another country and beat most. His natural strength must be incredible.
Really interesting player. I normally don't get excited about Canadian players but there was hype generated about Cam Wake coming from the CFL with lots of teams were after him and we got lucky. Lots of NFL teams are interested in LDT - where there's smoke there's fire. He could be good.

His instincts are probably his best asset. He also has very good natural strength and did well compared to the other linebackers in most of the Combine drills. Like Zach Thomas, he has probably been told that he's too small to play the position in the NFL, but every now and then a player emerges with remarkable desire. I think that Borland appears to have a great desire - I don't know if it is remarkable, time will tell.
Ireland would never have picked him because of his height/weight measures and was non-negotiable on these matters, but Hickey may be more open.
Hard player to rate - high risk, high return. Someone will probably fall in love with him.

Great work - and absolutely agree with Allen Robinson. He could be a target in the 2nd and could be another Brandon Marshall type - dominant, take over the game type receiver. Big fan.

Disagree with your sentiments on Odell Beckham - do think he's a stud - a Boldin type WR with more movement skills.

Dom Easley - so under the radar - which really surprises me, as I see him as a 1st round talent.

Cooks is a skill guy that is so intriguing to me.

I think he is gone by 19.
