Dolphins coach Tony Sparano has said he is content with keeping just two quarterbacks. But Tuesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars at least gave him something to think about. The Jaguars cut veteran quarterback David Garrard, saving $8.075 million in salary that was due to him this year and giving the starting job to eight-year veteran Luke McCown. Rookie first-round pick Blaine Gabbert will be the backup.Had Garrard been on the roster another day, his full 2011 salary would have been guaranteed. Instead, Garrard, 33, is now a free agent after five seasons as the Jags' primary starter. The Dolphins will likely do some research on Garrard but have expressed confidence in Chad Henne and Matt Moore. Miami also has rookie Pat Devlin on the practice squad.Game-day rosters have been expanded from 45 to 46 this year, but 16 teams have opted not to keep a third quarterback. From 1991 through 2010, teams were allowed to designate an emergency third quarterback who could not play before the fourth quarter without disqualifying the other quarterbacks. The coaches going without a third quarterback will use the 46th spot for someone who will do more than hold a clipboard most of the time."I think it gives you the ability to bring in maybe somebody else that can contribute 25-30 plays in the game," Sparano said.If any teams signs Garrard this week, his full 2011 salary would be guaranteed. If he signs after Week 1, he would be paid on a week-to-week basis.http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports...ns-have-said-1823726.html?cxtype=rss_dolphins
