Merged: Rick Spielman to the Vikings . . .

all i can say when i read the title to the thread is HAHAHA...what a joke, first the vikings drop daunte then now this, whats next the hiring of wansted to offensive coordinator? haha looks like they are trying to take a page out of miami during the wansted years, make bad trades and fill your front office with idiots....glad not to be a vikings fan!

well im feel sorry for minny. all hopes and dreams are lost with that move! 1 thing im happy for is that i never have to hear or see his sorry *** on espn nfl live anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i couldnt stand him!

One thing is for sure...

In this capacity, Spielman will finally get a chance to prove or disprove his abilities.

I never bashed the guy. I empathized for the puppet situation he was cast into... and I hoped he would at least get his own fair shot.

I'm not taking either side to the debacle of '04. I'm simply glad he will get a fair shake to prove his ability. All of us should be so lucky.

I wish him well.

Vikings | Spielman hired

Tue, 30 May 2006 12:16:49 -0700

Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports the Minnesota Vikings have hired Rick Spielman to replace Fran Foley as their vice president of player personnel. "We are extremely excited to hire Rick," owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement. "We are impressed with Rick's expertise, passion, character and work ethic." Spielman was to be introduced at a 4 p.m. press conference in the team's Winter Park Fieldhouse. Spielman, who joined ESPN Insider as an NFL analyst after a five-year stint with the Miami Dolphins, has been part of three divisional championships and six playoff teams.

Commendable thoughts, but:

-Spielman pulled out his Al Haig impersonation before Saban was hired, the whole I'm in charge, I'm not going anywhere thing, then got kicked out on his backside by Saban like a whooped puppy.

-Even though he may not be at fault for Eddie Moore/Jamar Fletcher (Thx DW, you moron) he still pulled the trigger on Lamar Gordon/AJ Feeley. He rolled the bones and crapped out- Kay Jay Harris is better than Gordon and was a FA.

-Much like Theisman, Spielman is an annoying, nerve grating JERK. My personal dream- Theisman, Spielman, and Sean Salisbury in a space capsule heading for Nebulon 5.

Only problem is, is Brad Childress any better than Dave Wannstadt? I'm with the minority of posters on this board that thinks Spielman had a good eye for talent and it was Wannstadt $%#&ing things up. However, I was convinced that the Vikes were going down the porcelain throne before this and this doesn't change my opinion one way or the other.

True, but he had 1 year to turn a team around or be fired. He would have been crucified if he hadn't have brought in a new QB, which is why he overpaid for a guy that wasn't for sale. AJ Feeley may have turned out to be a bust, but things could have turned out much differently if the team he was stepping into wasn't such a clusterf***. Lamar Gordon for a 3rd was a desperation move done in the hopes of saving the season after Ricky split. They were bad moves, no doubt about it, and I wouldn't want Spielman having GM powers, but there were legitimate reasons behind them.

I suspect that team will pick up good players for the system they run while he's there, especially 3-7th rounders, Spielman had a good eye for talent, I think we would be just as well off with him and Saban, afterall, a lot of Saban's first draft had Speilman written on it as well, since it was his personnel staff that presented the info to Saban.

I respect those points, but nonetheless they were crappy moves and horrendous values. If done out of desperation is that an excuse or an indictment of Spielman in that he put his own well being ahead of the long term interests of the organization? I would argue the latter, and thank my lucky stars that he and DW are gone.

Owhch, man this is soooo funny. So, Minny gets Rick and a second, and a bald dude with a bad 'stache (Rick must like working with coaches who have porn size staches) for a coach, while we get Saban and Culpepper. Great deal!! Maybe he has enough cash to get his llllisssp fixxssed now.
