Dolphins drafted with their own pick on Round 3, No, 72. Olivier playes Defensive End for the University of Miami, and the former hurricane player gets to play for his home team.

Not only was he suspended half the year he didn't play as much as a full-time starter once he returned. Had he not been suspended he would've been a solid second rounder. He's a good pick & a great pass rusher that plays the run well.

We only ever take Canes players I don't think much of. It's unusual. Meh.

Can't really judge him off this past season after the suspension, but he played great the previous season and had he stayed, would've been a higher pick next season.

Great value in the 3rd as said earlier. Would have been a 2nd if he wasn't suspended. Will help out the pass rush which is much needed. Next up a wr .

McShay just said he expected him to go in the 2nd and he loves the pick. Finally a little respect.

4.5 forty at combine, longest broad jump, had fastest time in one of the shuttle drills. I suspect he will be both OLB in 3-4 and DE in 4-3. I like the pick.

Yeah I'm warming up to it. Just posted in the draft forum that Todd McShay stated how he thought Vernon would go in the second round and Miami made a great pick. Hope he's right.

He will be a 4-3 DE but could go OLB Cam Wake style if we set up in the 3-4.

Great potential.....a bit of a reach though in terms of grading this year. Strong kid, plays strong/tough. Pretty good against the run for his size, nice getoff on snap, lacks elite pass rush skills or great burst, needs refinement. Needs to work harder in the offseason and become more dedicated. At Miami he was constantly challenged to step up, falling off first team in off-season depth charts. Needs to become a professional.

This is the perfect example of picking for need and not BPA. I'm ok with the pick but not elated....not with Sanu, Boykin and others still on the board.

Agree wholeheartedly. Vernon has 1st round ability, and he's a decent, hardworking kid.

Mike Mayocks take: "Out of all the underclassmen that came out this year, and I didn't think many should have, Vernon is one that I banged the table for. He's a solid 4-3 defensive end who can get edge pressure on the quarterback"....And Mike Mayock is one anaylist that I actually respect. Great Pick!

You are right. I read the 40 wrong. Too slow for OLB.

The info NFL.com gives about him seems promising. Says he would be an OLB in the 3-4. I wonder if we'll move him around a lot. Is he a speed rusher?

So? It doesn't take much to be one of the worst offenders. The whole thing was a farce. All it means is he got hit with one of the heaviest punishments.

Eh... I hope the pick works out. I've heard way too many times before after picking a DE/OLB that the guy shoulda gone a round sooner, n that we got a steal.

From a physical standpoint, the best looking Canes defender in years. Great shoulders cut to a solid waist. He was the one guy I hated to see leave early. You'll notice that Lamar Miller is still on the board along with Tommy Streeter, Brandon Washington and the others.

We've had several mentions of Vernon here. ckparrothead brought him up in a thread perhaps 6 weeks ago and I posted at length. In short, he's an attacking outside rusher with enough nimbleness to duck his shoulder and find the ideal path to the quarterback or ball carrier. Capable of adjusting on the fly. Nasty streak. Uses leverage well and is not a liability against the run.

Production never matched how good he looks getting off the bus but keep in mind the Canes were playing with woeful defensive tackles the past few seasons, particularly after Curtis Porter got hurt against Ohio State early in 2010. Consequently the ends and backers often had to chase down the funnel and never got the full opportunity to attack off the perimeter. Vernon isn't great in space when asked to cover.

He was involved in the Shapiro scandal. Supposedly a check was directed to his high school alma mater. That resulted in the harshest penalty, 6 games. Vernon never got fully untracked last season after arriving late.

Prior to the 2010 season, he was the whispered guy. I watched Warren Sapp stand alongside him on the sideline and give pointers throughout the 2010 spring game. That's how highly Vernon was thought of. I hoped for 4th round for Vernon but it's intriguing we got him.

    Just saying.

No one seems to know why he was suspended. I don't want people thinking that it's character issues, etc.

Might want to look back over some of those names, man.

South Florida is home to the best high school football players in the country.

Miami gets a lot of that talent and doesn't coach it for ****.

Then they get to the league and under some decent coaching and they're starting and contributing in major ways.

Sam Shields couldn't do **** right at The U.

Green Bay drafts him and he's a big part of a playoff run.
