Over the last 5 years, Dolphins ranked number 2 in drafting.

So the good drafting teams are bad on the field and the bad drafting teams are good on the field? Brilliant!

Drafted players can become starters by default because of lack of better options in front of them.

Seriously it took the third page for someone to say this. Wow.

Guys we have Odrick starting, who by the way, is a mediocre defensive end and may be better off inside.

We have Sean Smith starting, who by the way, is a mediocre cornerback. And we have no better options here.

We have had Jake Long starting, who by the way, is a mediocre offensive tackle.

The only players we have drafted who are worth a **** is Pouncey, Hartline and Reshad Jones over the last five years. So that's three good ones in 5 years and hopefully Tannehill and Miller is on the list next year.

Ridiculous premise, the GM is in full control of who is on the team so the GM is in control of who starts. Its absolutely STUPID to measure his success solely based on something he controls. Example: if Chad Henne and Pat White are the only QBs on the roster Ireland gets credit for drafting a starting QB. RIDICULOUS!!

In the last year all 5 of the top drafting teams have had Head Coaching changes and 3 of the 5 have has front office changes! This is SubOmar journalism!

Seriously? Is this a real post? Starting for an NFL team, something only 264 people per year in the entire world get to say, doesn't make him good? Rationality has left this forum...

Yea - it's serious. The point is, just bc you start for one team, doesn't mean that the player would start on every other team. Nolan Carrol was a starter, how many teams does he start for other then the fins.

That's the point.

Seven of this years playoff teams are in the bottom half of that list. Five playoff teams are in the bottom third, including this years two Super Bowl teams.

I feel like Im being trolled.

you can buy the best ingredients in the world, but if your chef can't cook, it's going to taste like ****.

Yes, but if your purchasing agent replaces the rotted rancid six year old spoiled ingredients with rotten rancid one year old spoiled ingredients, it doesn't matter how good the chef is. The dish may be better but it still tastes like ****. And if the chef and the purchasing agent both suck, then you are going to be left with multiple consecutive losing seasons and continued mediocrity that drains all hope out of the fan base.

Let's be honest here. The majority of our draft picks during the Wannstedt-Saban-Cameron era were awful. Absolutely awful Awful to the point that a blindfolded monkey throwing darts could have done better. And that history of failed draft picks led to a decline in the team that culminated in our 1-15 season. Given that our starters at the beginning of the Ireland GM era were so bad, our dart throwing monkey could have done equally as well as Ireland on many of those metrics. If you replace awful players with players that are only bad you have may have scored in some artificial metrics, but you haven't left the team as anything other than being consistently mediocre. And it doesn't make you the number 2 drafting team in the league.

The Dolphins are and have been recently a mediocre team, which means young guys get a chance to start over veterans who aren't that good. The Dolphins also don't resign their own draft picks. No one brings it up but no one Jeff Ireland has drafted has been resigned by the team, which means newer rookies are regularly getting shots to play.

Also, we do a terrible job signing unrestricted free agents. Most of them don't get big free agent deals but they also don't make the team or play much. Which means, hey... more draft picks.

Any study that places equal weight on starts and doesn't factor in the quality of the player starting is just playing with their own poop, imo. It's like saying every major college program does an equally good job of recruiting if an equal percentage of their recruits end up playing. Sorry, but my little scorecard says Alabama is better than you, Rutgers.

If we're the second best team at drafting over the last five years, Bill Parcells should get most of the credit since Ireland has only been running the show for two years now.

I don't need statistics and jargon to show me we are void of talent on this team, and a big chunk of the better talent on this team has been allowed to all come together at once in free agency. Not only does Ireland suck at drafting, he doesn't know when to negotiate contracts....and the fact that we have the draft pics we do is lost in the fact that 2 of those pics are because we gave up two better pics to get Marshall. The dude sucks......6 and 7 win seasons says that much better than all of the nonsense posted.

You guys are missing the point of the article. It rates drafts based on value of the player selected, and not on team needs. For example, Pouncey would be rated as a good pick, but this article doesn't analyze if that pick was a team need (when we really needed a QB). You are all complaining about team needs, but this article inst about team needs. Ireland is relatively successful with the players he drafts, but he fails in drafting players that we need - like waiting so long to draft a QB. I feel pretty confident that the player Ireland drafts will turn out to be a good player, but I don't think he has prioritized the correct positions all the time, which has been his main fault imo. He changed all the by drafting a QB though.

Ireland is successful at drafting decent players. Where he has failed miserably is in drafting difference makers. We have a bunch of guys who can play, but very very few who are among the best at their positions. Who has he drafted that is a standout? Pouncey? Jones? So far thats about it.
