Penn State Ex-Coach, Others Charged in Child Sex Case

So a fan hears about a molestation case and the first thing he does is head over to a message board to gloat about how his team's scandal pales in significance.
What Sandusky did was absolutely disgusting and I hope he gets locked up for the rest of his life for this. He is a monster.
I see a lot of people blaming Paterno, and he does deserve some blame, but lets not make it out to be like he was a mastermind behind a huge cover up. McQuerry reported the incident to Paterno and he immediately reported it to Curley. As far as the law is concerned, Paterno did exactly what he was supposed to do. Curley and Schultz are the ones that swept it under the rug and now they are going to pay for their actions. Perhaps Paterno should have followed up on the incident, but lets not make Paterno out to be a bad guy in this. He did what he was required to do. Sandusky was not a coach anymore for the team, so Paterno had no real power over him in that situation.
All of these incidents occurred through the The Second Mile, not the Penn State football team, it is why guys like Curley and Schultz are in big trouble.
It has been widely speculated up here that this will be Paterno's last season. Has nothing to do with the Sandusky news, it has everything to do with Paterno's health and the fact that his contract is up. The rumor circulating over a month ago is that Urban Meyer might already have a wink wink deal to become the head coach in 2012. If not him, I could easily see Penn State putting a call into Al Golden, who you know would hop on the first available plane to ink that deal. Who wouldn't want to escape the mess that is the Hurricanes program? Also, don't try to compare the Sandusky news to what is going on with the Hurricanes, one is directly team related(Hurricanes), the other is a former coach using the college campus with no direct ties to the football team.
This is certainly a bad situation and a black eye for Penn State, and heads will roll, but in no way affects the football team in the present or the future. I look forward to rooting my Lions on to hopefully a victory this weekend against Nebraska. If they win two of their final three games they will clinch a spot in the first ever Big Ten Championship game.

Yea, Paterno did what he was LEGALLY obligated to do, but the fact that he let it die is morally wrong x100. Legality =/= morality. By not taking the issue to the authorities, Paterno had a hand in every time a child was molested by Sandusky after that point. In my eyes, theres no defense for that as a human being. He will get off legally, but I can never think of the guy the same way.
As for Golden bolting, its certainly a possibility. Everyone pretty much knows PSU was Golden's dream job. i think its funny that you bring up the Miami scandal as a reason for him to bolt to PSU though. Thats rich. They wont have NCAA sanctions but youre kidding yourself if you think this story wont have a major impact on recruiting. What happened there is farrrrrr worse than anything that happened at UM. I rank drinking free booze and banging free escorts far better than an organization wide child molestation scandal.

The incident that was brought to Paterno's attention was in 2002. Sandusky retired from the coaching staff in 1999. So not sure how Paterno allowed Sandusky to stay on the staff when he wasn't on the staff to begin with. Sandusky used the schools facility for the Second Mile, which is why it is school related and not football related. The stuff that went on when Sandusky was on the coaching staff apparently was never brought to light to Paterno or the school. Again, all this happened through the Second Mile, not the football team. That is an IMPORTANT part of the story.
It is a strong possibility. The question is if Penn State wants him or not. If they do, he will be on the first plane to State College, no question about it. Though Penn State might look at some other options, and like I said in my earlier post Meyer is a strong rumor up here.
I brought up the Hurricanes situation because JCane brought it up in the very first post of this thread. Don't believe me, go back and read his post. I agree what went on with Sandusky is way worse than paying players to come to the school. However, the Hurricanes could be punished, Penn State won't. Why? Because the Hurricanes situation involves the football program, the Sandusky situation doesn't involve the football team but a charity on campus. That is where from a football standpoint the Canes are in much bigger doo doo than Penn State. I will repeat again, so you don't accuse me of anything, what Sandusky did was unthinkable and one of the worst things that a person can do. I hope he pays dearly for what he did. Just lets know the facts that this really doesn't involve the football program. The reported incident to Paterno happened years after Sandusky had left the team.

JoePa's old. He probably turned on an "Unsolved Mysteries" re-run and fell asleep, then forgot about it.
Again, the incident Joe found out about was in 2002. Sandusky hadn't been a coach since 1999, so again from a football standpoint there is nothing to hurt the legacy of Joe. Perhaps it hurts Joe's image because he didn't follow up with it, but he did do everything the law says he should do. Let's not make Paterno the villian here, Sandusky is the guy we should be directing all our hate to.

Joe couldn't fire Sandusky, because he wasn't even on the coaching staff when he was made aware of what was going on.

In Florida, if I see someone drowning, bleeding, having a heart attack, ect, I am not legally obligated to do anything to help. I can continue on my merry way and leave the person to fate. Doing so would reflect poorly on my morals though, despite me being fine legally.
Except Joe did do something, he reported to his superior. It was the AD who tried to sweep it under the rug. Joe's biggest mistake seems to be trusting the AD to do his job and the right thing.

So if I see someone dying and I just stop a guy and tell him that the hurt guy needs help and then walk away after being ignored, thats significantly better? Put aside the PSU and Joe Pa glasses and look at this objectively. If Rex Ryan was aware of child molestation, told Tannenbaum and then let it die when he did nothing about it you would be trashing him. Joe Paterno willingly ignored child molestation for an entire decade. Thats pretty serious. I can't respect anyone who would do that.
I am mentioning the football side because you, the original poster, made a football like comparison on the very first post between the violations the Hurricanes committed and what is going on now at Penn State.
I have said that what Sandusky did was unthinkable and he deserves to be put in jail and the key thrown away. I understand Joe is the name everyone knows, but there is no reason to try and tarnish his reputation and the football program's over this. Sandusky is the monster and Curley is the one who tried to sweep it under the rug as "horse play". Perhaps he should have tried to push the issue harder with Curely, but he did exactly what was required of him to do.
Really football shouldn't even be mentioned in this topic. Sandusky was not a team employee when this came to light and this story has no connection to the football team other than Paterno reporting Sandusky to the AD. The problem lies with Sandusky himself and the actions that were not taken by the school's AD. There is absolutely no comparison between Miami and Penn State, as PSU committed no NCAA violations. But the fact that you and some others have attempted to connect the two, I feel it as a Penn State fan to try and help educate you on the story. To you it is just a national story, to me it is a local story and I can understand how you don't know the full story. Sandusky is the monster and the AD(former) is in big trouble.
