THE NEW: Five rookies were added. CB Nolan Carroll (fifth-round pick), S Reshad Jones (fifth-round pick), CB A.J. Wallace (undrafted rookie), DB Ross Weaver (undrafted rookie), SSJonathon Amaya (undrafted rookie) are all competing to make the 53-man roster.
THE DEPTH CHART: CB – Vontae Davis, Will Allen, Evan Oglesby, Nolan Carroll, A.J. Wallace; CB – Sean Smith, Jason Allen, Nate Ness, Ross Weaver; FS – Chris Clemons, Reshad Jones; SS - Yeremiah Bell, Tyrone Culver, Jonathon Amaya
THE BREAKDOWN: The Dolphins have kept five or six cornerbacks and four safeties on the 53-man roster the past two seasons. They generally keep two more defensive backs on the practice squad, and this season likely will see the same.
There are a tone of new faces in the Dolphins secondary, but none of them are established NFL players. And even fewer have a respectable body of work (maybe Reshad Jones does) which hints it’s a certainty they’ll be immediate contributors at this level. Even though replacing Nate Jones with a healthy Will Allen should upgrades the nickel spot, it’s irresponsible to justify that this unit has progressed.
While Davis and Smith will likely hopefully improve now that they’ve got a year’s worth of experience under their belt, it’s highly likely that Wilson’s replacement at free safety (Clemons, Reshad Jones or Culver) will experience some growing pains as a first-year starter. Until one of this unit’s young newcomers proves he can contribute more to the secondary than Jason Allen has the past few seasons the Dolphins secondary has to go into the regression category. But there’s tremendous potential for growth across the board.
Deuces.

The secondary will get better as they get experience. We have two very young corners who have great skills. Also, we have safeties that are young and we have a pro bowler at the other safety.

Super ****ing dumb. We're replacing Wilson with Culver or and improved Clemons = upgrade; Davis comes into his 2nd year = upgrade; Smith comes into his 2nd year = upgrade; Y. Bell is still Y. Bell; and W. Allen or N. Jones? = upgrade. Not seeing the secondary regression. Add to that, Nolan's secondaries look much better than PP's secondaries year in and year out.

Pretty much captures it. There is of course a realistic worst case scenario, but the realistic worst case scenario would involve the Dolphins secondary being the same as a year ago because (for whatever reason) Smith and Davis make zero progress, Will Allen post-ACL is no better (or worse) than Nate Jones, and Tyrone Culver (or Chris Clemons) is the same as Gibril Wilson. I have a hard time believing all that.

Do writers get off on creating drama??? We're looking at one of the best Dolphin teams we've had in a long time, and all I see nonsense like this. What's up with that?

Irresponsible to justify that this unit has progressed? Bull****. Wilson was terrible last year, he's gone. Davis and Smith shown promise, but they did give up a lot of big plays as well, but now they have a full year under their belt. Add in that our best CB, who just so happened to be having a career type year, is back. There's nowhere for this unit to go but up.

I agree, there's nowhere for this group to go but up.

They were lit up like Christmas tree last year, they better progress !!!

No way in hell this Defense is not improved... Having Wilson, Porter and Taylor out, finally our fornt 7 will get pressure. It won't be that easy for offenses to see the holes on our D.

nolan made R. Hill look good...... i think we will be alright

the chances of Gibrils replacement being better than Gibril 85%
the chances of Davis and Smith being better this year 80%
chances of Allen coming back and stll being pretty good 70%
the chances of us having a better D cordinator than last year 90%

How did we regress?

We didn't regress, the defense should be much improved this year.
