Can the Dolphins slap a "franchise player" tag on Ogunleye next season if he reports back for only the final six games? If I recall, it may mean they have to pay him something akin to what the top five who play his position make, and there may be some other restrictions, but is it a possibility? Can you tag an unrestricted free agent? Thanks in advance for the info!

Yes they could, but they wouldn't because they'd immediately take a one-year cap hit equal to the average of the top five salaries at that position. My guess is that after the Kearse deal, you're probably looking at a $6 million franchise tag. We can't clear enough space to afford that on the defensive side of the ball.
If we use a franchise tag next year, it might be McMichael if he has a huge year and we can't lock him up before he would hit the market.
