According to Omar Kelly, Starks was just tagged
Third time since Saturday that it sounds like Starks was tagged. Hopefully this time it stick.
Edit: Adam Schefter just confirmed.
Dolphins DO tag Starks after all
Jason La Canfora via his twitter.
You mean Tag dont you?
Good move, keeps that strong defensive line together for another year. $8 million isn't that bad of price to pay either.
Makes sense to do this.
So that would leave about $37 million in cap room?
Honestly the only way I really like this is if we can reach an extension. If we can sign him for 4 years @ 20-24 mil I'd be happy. Can groom Odrick behind him and Soliai and then lets Soliai walk after this year depending on our cap situation. Investing over 12 or so million in the defensive tackle position is too rich for my liking.
Really a no brainier. I don't think Ireland intends on using the entire salary Cap.
Worse comes to worse we pay the $8 ish Million , best case scenario we sign to long contract and the # drops.
Couldn't we have used the transition tag and saved a couple million? Is it possible we could use the transition on a guy like Smith who will be heavily coveted throughout FA?
Bye, Bye, Long.
Sean please sign reasonable deal.
Hartline, go away
It makes a lot of sense. His tag number is very close to what his value is IMO and the Dolphins should try to keep good players. But, looking ahead both Starks and Solai are under contract for one year. Don't be surprised if Miami picks a DT fairly highly in the draft, or looks to lock up Solai long-term.
Transition tag would've saved us money but then we run the risk of him signing a big long term deal elsewhere and our hand being forced
Good. Nice opening salvo, Jeff. Starks was the right choice. Now hopefully they get a long-term deal done.
Cb transition tag is what? $6M? Is he even worth that?
remember, Keeston Randle is on the team, developing....
Hopefully they will continue to work on a long-term deal, it sounds like the Dolphins have been low-balling so far
My question is, how much of this move is more of a keep away from FA until we can hammer out a long term deal more than we just want to lease you for a year?
I like tag on Starks, but at the same time it looks extremely foolish to have both of our DT's on contract years.
If Starks does not do an extension, BOTH DT's are up next year. Wow. Might be a target in the draft this year.
I like the move. Starks is a hell of a player.
Or they plan on keeping Soliai/Starks together for one year, letting Starks walk after this year, franchise Soliai again, or extend him, then bump Odrick inside, have Soliai/Odrick/Randle/ for 2014 and beyond.
good move, hopefully we can sort a long term deal in the next few weeks and bring the cap figure down a little
Why would Ireland care about next year? He has to get past this year first.
It's also possible Miami locked him in so they could trade Starks and get something in return rather then losing him with nothing other than a possible compensatory pick next year.
Starks is a baller.
Sign of a good GM in any industry is to think about the past, present, and future.
So yes, Ireland should care about what happens next year. Hence why we drafted Johnathan Martin last year, to avoid the debacle with Jake Long and gain leverage on contract.
If Starks does not sign a long term deal, we run into a scenario in which we could potentially lose both of our starting DT's, or they gain leverage knowing both are in contract years driving up the price.
This is what leads team into cap trouble causing massive cuts.
Don't be surprised when we draft a DT in the 2nd round, would have nothing to do with next year though......
Starks is the teflon man -> nothing sticks LOL
With the draft as deep at it is with DT and with teams running the hurry up the prudent thing would be for the team to draft a DT who can run and let Solai walk next year -> and we attempt to keep Starks who is a baller
We now know that we will draft a DT in the 2nd -> 3rd rd, that is unless Starks signs a longer term deal
What kind of a contract would it take to extend him. Would a 4 year 22.5 suffice? Bunkley got a 5 year 25 last year and is younger. I think 5-6.5 would get it done.
I really like Starks and was a little surprised some board members were ok with letting him walk. I hope Miami can sign him to a solid 3-4 year deal.
There are so many member on here with so many different opinions you will hear anything and everything. You will difintly find some members that may or may not agree with your opinion regardless of how sane or insane it is. The joy of the internet it can allow all the nuts to get together in one place.
glad the big man is back. IMO hes the best thing to come from the Parcells era.
next lets lock Hartline up at a reasonable price, then get the ball rolling on the big fish out there
Starks is one of the best players on this team. GREAT move, but priority is resigning. The amount he contributes isnt always recognized by everyone. Grade A player on this team.
Great move, great price!. The beginning of one helluva off season, we hope..
To see the cap space go from 45 mil to 37 mil b/c of one player already on the team kinda sucks but he's a good DL-man nonetheless. I want to see Wallace or Jennings signed first.
Out of all the potential players to be tagged Starks is the one that earned it the most! Smith and Hartline are vastly overrated! Tagging Long would simply be because he was once the first overall pick ignoring the fact that he is damaged goods, and none of the other free agents shouldn't even be mentioned in the same thought as franchise.
i just wonder why we havent cut any players yet
I would guess because we don't need to do it to free up cap space really only reasons are to free up cap space or if a player you really don't want is due a roster bonus the start of the league year. Now if guys like Marshall are due a roster bonus torrow you swing the axe!
Good lord are you feeling ok That was positive.... from SR 7
