Well while some unimportant game was going on between a couple of overexposed Florida teams, which was only seen by those in the Eastern and Central time zone without a pay-per-view package, a major accomplishment was going on in the "Wild West Texas Town of El Paso".
Yes at that time my alma mata(also John Madden's), Cal Poly went down to the Sun Bowl and beat UTEP 34-13. This was the first time since the NCAA formally recognized football divisions in the the 1970's, that Cal Poly has defeated a Division 1-A team in regulation. Cal poly did defeat New Mexico St in overtime in 1997.
For a Division 1-AA team that went 3-8 the year before to go in it's opener and beat a 1-A team that is fantastic.
