The Dolphins are spending the final week before the draft getting a final look at a few prospects that intrigue them.
According to a source, the Dolphins dispatched linebackers coach Mark Duffner to Louisville on Wednesday for a private workout with Preston Brown, a middle linebacker that has piqued their interest.

NFL.com's Nolan Nawrocki (author of NFL Draft: 2014 Preview) calls him a third- or fourth-round pick and said he has “outstanding size, physical tackler, good instincts, delivers some pop on contact and strikes with force. Good football intelligence – makes the calls and lines up a defense. Average coverage instincts. Struggles to match up with athletic tight ends in man coverage…. Aggressive, high-collision ‘Mike’ linebacker best paired with a demanding position coach who will extract the most from him.”

wear a target in coverage...early day 3...2 down lb

Brown will go on Day 2 and he's not horrible in coverage. It's clearly not his strength, but you can see from him (playing No. 3) in this vid against UCF his coverage isn't what idiots like Nawrocki seem to think it is.

He's a Sam or Mike guy who is going to plug a hole in the box where RBs and TEs have been leaking out all over the place against this Dolphins team for years, never more so than last season. For that ability, he's worth a shot, imo, and athletically he's capable of more in coverage. Misi started out horrible and was actually pretty decent in coverage last season. It happens all the time, provided you're athletic enough to begin with, which this kid is.

Like everyone else says he's a two-down guy, but he is a thumper. He can play some zone but don't get him in man situations or he will be picked on. He has very good intangibles though, leader, film rat, and called the plays a Lou. I listened to him being interviewed by Jim Miller and Pat Kirwin and came away very impressed and he knows where he needs to improve and said he coverage must get better and he is working on this this off-season, but he wasn't asked to do a lot of covering in the system he was in.

I would love him as a 5th round pick. I think of Charlie Strong ILB's and think he kind of reminds me of a mix between Crowder and Spikes.

5th round...sure...i think it's more a 4th round grade personally...but you better hide that in man coverage...seems like you can say that a lot about the ilb class...

Agreed. I'm seeing a payer who's aggressive, tough against the run and can blitz gaps effectively. I'm pretty impressed with Brown;s movement skills, he has a suddenness about him, speed and good lateral quickness. He doesn't strike me as a MLB who I'd look as a big liability in coverage, I think that's overblown.

I like Brown - probably a target in the fourth, maybe fifth - but as hoops said.. He's a 2 down backer in my eyes. With how porous our Run D was last year (especially at the linebacker spot) and our losing of Soliai.. I'm okay with that. May be needed.

I don't know why we didn't just pick up spikes in free agency. A 1 year deal and for little $, and ends up going to buffalo instead. We definitely could of had him, and would of fixed our problems against the run immediately and held a grudge against new England. The 1 year deal would of kept his character in check most likely.

That was a huge miss by our staff imo. Now we gotta use a draft pick on one of these guys.
