Marc Colombo isn't talking.

The veteran right tackle, signed by the Dolphins at the start of August, has made it known that he'll make himself available to the media once the 2011 season starts.

His presence here already says plenty, however. It says that the Dolphins of Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland - after three-plus years of endless offensive-line investment - still didn't believe they had found the right formula. So they felt compelled to reach out to yet another old Dallas hand, a tough guy whom the Cowboys let go.
"Colombo brings his vet status here," left tackle Jake Long said.

He also brings baggage: a bad knee, plus a poor overall grade for his 2010 play. So we'll see. We'll see whether this group can become what Long envisions: "We have the potential to be a great offensive line."

We'll see whether Vernon Carey, now 30 and slimmer only in salary, is spry enough to pull from right guard. We'll see whether rookie Mike Pouncey can manage the pressure of expectations while manning the middle. We'll see whether left guard Richie Incognito can provide consistency now that he has a consistent assignment.

We'll see whether Sparano's smile - which he flashed when discussing the group Wednesday - widens or fades.
"I really like where they are right now," Sparano said.

That's notable, because he's notoriously difficult to satisfy when it comes to this position. It is the position he played. It is the position he coached in Dallas just prior to joining the Dolphins. It is the position that everyone assumed he would fortify first and with some finality here, allowing Miami to allocate nearly all subsequent resources to other areas.

Thus, it is the position that serves as the baseline to assess his overall performance.

Its amazing that he is an O-line coach and yet our O-line has consistently been horrible the last few years!!!
 
Colombo was later seen with a red cloth, presumably for his anticipated matador impersonations this season.

You mean horrible LAST YEAR? What other Sparano years was the O-Line "horrible"?

That's an exaggeration. They gambled on Smiley and Grove, hoping they could stay healthy. When they were healthy, they played very well. Had they stayed healthy the Phins would have had an exceptional O-line.
Unfortunately the gamble didn't work and the FO had to scramble to replace 2 positions on the O-line. That's where the problems have been the last 2 seasons.
Personally, I would have liked to see them sign one of the better FA lineman this offseason.
 
Although injuries played their role last year, the o-line being that bad was inexcusable. With spending a 1st round pick on an offensive lineman again this year, this line has to rise to the occasion. Anything else is unacceptable.
