alot of threads I read on this MB has a reference to "containing the edges" to minimize Spiller.
    He weighs more than C.Johnson.
Got huge yds from inside the T's in preseason.
Spiller is not afraid of contact or hitting the hole.

I know he bumps it to the sideline after he gets the first down but why all the concern of the edges?

I asked them on the Bills MB as well...

Because Spiller is not a back who can push the pile.

Can he run through the middle? Yes. Any back can if the middle is wide open.

    I don't know.

Ask Reggie Bush, Cadillac Williams, Felix Jones, LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, etc.

Spiller isn't a "cloud of dust and three yards" kind of back, over and over. Can he explode through a hole in the middle if it's there? Sure. But that depends more on your suspect O-line opening up those holes on a beefy and athletic D-line, with some pretty decent thumpers right behind it. On the outside is Spiller's best chance, especially with some of our OLBs being questionable edge-setters.

Why do Bills fans come out to Dolphins message boards hoping for confirmation on something they HOPE is true?

Why do Bills fans think a lackluster O-line isnt as big a deal as having 3 RB's?

I don't pretend to know more about the Fish than you do.
I was wondering if there was an article that was posted here of if one of your more trusted posters said it (so it must be true).
It has been a fairly common theme in alot of discussions about spiller lately

Defenses are taught to keep all the action to the middle of the field because there is help in the middle.

RB's are taught to seek the sidelines because defenders thin out on the outside.

Rolling to the outside is usually the best move a RB can make.

Don't let the national media myths lull you. The Bills interior OL is pretty good, and Levitre, Hangartner, and Wood can open some holes inside. The problem with the Bills OL is at the tackles, and that's more of a problem on passing plays than on runs. Furthermore, the Bills now have competent offensive coaching and NFL caliber play design and play calling with Jauron & Co gone. Gailey demonstrated in preseason that he knows how to design plays to maximize his players' talents and minimize their weaknesses -- and he knows how to call plays.

BTW, Spiller doesn't need much of a hole, and he can make even Pro Bowlers miss, and while y'all are worrying about containing Spiller, Edwards can hit Roscoe over the middle or Lee down the sidelines, especially on play action.

He can, but I have never seen anyone gash our defense up the middle with runs...We have always been stout against the run.. Its the outside open spaces Im worries about...Spiller can try that if he wants to though. I really want to shut this guy down.

Let him try it guy... I really like our defensive line up against your OL. BTW, we are more physical..probably be the most physical team you will play twice this year.

On top of that, fact is the middle of our defense is stout, and we're not too worried about anyone running up the gut, especially not anyone with a line as weak as Buffalo's , and Spiller's fragile ***....the only way he hurts us is on the edges, so we need to contain the edges and watch the screens

Look at Spiller's game film from college. He doesn't like running between the tackles and as soon as he sees a linebacker fill the hole he tries to bounce it outside. He was successful with it in college it will be hard for him to break the habit now. He doesn't run as hard as Chris Johnson of the Titans who you compared him to either.

If you watch tape on Chris Johnson you will see that he cannot run between the tackles. His average up the middle is something like less then 3 yards per carry.

And so far, Spiller is no CJ.

because for every warrick dunn and brian westbrook (smaller backs that they said could never carry the load, but surprised everyone), there are a thousand that couldn't (not saying cj spiller is one of them, but he showed nothing today, and that was the knock on him coming out of college - easily brought down on first contact).
