This decision is pretty surprising to me. I would guess that Urban Meyer would be the frontrunner to replace him.

I don't think any coach will be successful at ND. Their academic standards are simply too high. Football takes a lot of time, and most of the best players are far from geniuses. Other top notch schools like Duke, Virginia, and USC put out good athletic teams because even though they are extremely strong academically, they don't force their athletes to get such high grades. Notre Dame needs to realize that it's unrealistic to expect such high grades out of athletes and great performances on the field at the same time.
