The Official 2006 New York Mets Thread

I tend to agree, but I still think we could have done a better job with the pitching.
Maybe its just the old Met fan coming out in me again.

Good read.
Thanks for the compliment but maybe you can elaborate on how we could have done a better job on the SP? Im lost on that bro

Did you want to deal Milledge/Heilman/Carp for a mediocore #3 like Haren? Or an injury riddled 1 like Harden? We get boned on all these 3 for ones that the media floated out there because even though all prospects dont pan out, teams like the twins and a's live off teams overzealous to make a splash and im glad we are not that team anymore. They do their homework and im happy we're finally doing ours. By staying patient and waiting for a team to drop out early we gain the advantage and the price will drop until the trade deadline approaches.

Take it a step further and if Pelfrey or Humber emerges as a starter ready now and we dont have to rely on Aaron Sele's and Dave Williams' we gain another advantage of have another sp who can strike some hitters out increasing their chances of success and ours as well.

Serious question

How high are you guys on Milledge.....there were times last years he couldnt even catch a fly ball and looked horrible. What do you guys see him as?

The Braves are in decline, and they havent improved over the offseason very much if any at all.

They dont have the talent now to compete with The Mets established players. They dont have enough talent to compete with Florida's young players, and they dont have enough talent to hit with Philli even though neither team has great pitching.

You also have to remember last year after Florida put together our starting staff in full we were as good as any other team in the NL, and had a better record from that point on that most of them also. Philli went on a tear, and we will see if that was luck or if they really are that good.

Unless Florida and Philli get banged up a lot I dont see Atlanta with any chance to finish better than 4th this year. Unless the Jones's have amazing years.
Andruw will but chipper will not. Andruw has a chance to put his price tag in the 120m -130m range with a big year as his FA approaches.

ATL could be there with NYM/Philly/Florida though if some of their young players emerge. Francouer, Johnson among others would have to show significant improvement and Tim Hudson would have to revert to form as well as settling bullpen roles. Not impossible but a stretch. i dont expect them to be pushovers but the that infield? Yikes.

Depends who you ask. Milledge is unique to say the least. Personally I try and temper my expectations with prospects because theyre young and the slightest thing can set them back or boost their confidence.

I guess Id put him more along the likes of Gary Sheffield (minus the roids). Like Sheff, he has a hard time with slowing down his bat speed and when sheff was younger he struggled some with breaking pitches. Milledge is a bit more advanced hitting the offspeed stuff then Sheff was when he first came up but Sheff was 19 or 20 when he arrived so i believe milledge has six months to a year on him off the top of my head. Hes got better wheels then Sheff ever had but he wont ever see the 40-45 hrs that sheff can put up in any given year because I dont believe his frame can ever support the muscle. He may not steal as many bases as he should given his considerable speed because he hasnt become a base stealer yet but the Mets typically bring in Rickey Henderson to work with reyes during spring training and I suspect they will both be spending time with Milledge as well. Hes also carried a reasonable OBP at every level and solid slugging numbers that should get better as he matures and develops more power.

For next year, I would put Milledge at something like:
100 games/400 plate appearances
285BA
15HR
65RBI
10 SB
350 OBP
870 OPS

I expect him to start in the minors or be a 4th OF for the first month and when alou and or Green goes down he will see significant time. The other nice thing about Milledge is that hes only the first of our blue chip OF's to arrive as Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez are good and in martinez' case sick, prospects as well. So while our minors dont possess the depth some organizations possess, we have some blue chippers.

In his prime I think 300-30/30-100 is legitmately within reach. Remember hes wasnt only the best prospect in the Mets organization last year but at various points websites with good track records like Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus had him ranked at #1 in the entire league. So obviously Im not a blind homer with illegitimate expectations :)

talk of marlins/phils winnin second place? i guess everyone hasnt followed the nl east the past 15 years... braves will some how find a way to compete if they stay healthy. and yeah, the mets do win the divison again. go METS!

I think the Met's starting pitching is going to be their undoing this year. The Phils have starting pitching, and hitting for power and average. The Phils could use a solid setup man, and a little help at Catcher and 3rd Base, but I think this is the Phil's year. The Braves and Marlins will battle it out for 3rd, with the Nats pulling up the rear.

The Phils have Howard, Utley, Hamels and a whole bunch of nothing good.

Barajas - Can hit the longball, mediocore at best on D.
Howard- Beast
Utley - all star
Rollins - Inconsistant at best. When hes hot hes solid, when hes not hes useless
Web Helms - Stinks
Burrell - See Rollins. Although for whatever reason if Burrell played NYM every game hed be an all star
Rowand/Victoriano - Neither is special or detrimental

Myers - a #2 on most teams is #1 here
Garcia - 5+ era and a dead arm = not promising in that bambox
Moyer - Makes Duque and Glavine look young
Leiber - see Garcia
Hamels - Promising prospect started to get it in august before an awful sept
Eaton - Reminds me of the Kris Benson deal. Not good.

Gordon - Ok
rest of pen - yuck.

You have 2 players dude. Enjoy 3rd place, if youre that lucky.

I know it's not necessarily a popular opinion, but I like how Minaya handled the market this winter. With prices for a weak class of free agents absolutely out of control, he concentrated on avoiding long term deals: Glavine, Alou and Hernandez all were signed to short-term, relatively reasonable contracts. I think that you'll see Minaya wait things out, and then, around midseason, when some of these teams that overspent start feeling a payroll crunch, he'll move in and make some bargain acquisitions.

As for the inability to address starting pitching, well, apart from bringing back Glavine, what options were there? Zito's contract was laughably bad. They made a strong bid for Matsuzaka, but the Red Sox blew everyone out of the water. The only one they probably should have been more aggressive with was Schmidt, since his contract was fairly reasonable, in retrospect. But I remember hearing that he didn't want to go to NY anyway. Who knows. Minaya, I think, realized that if he wanted to bolster the starting pitching, he'd have to overpay tremendously. So, he did the next best thing: he concentrated on upgrading the offense and adding some balance (Ben Johnson and Alou), and adding a couple arms who could help the bottom of the rotation, or work in long relief (Schoeneweis, Vargas and Sosa). As it is, the rotation will try to hold its own with Glavine, Maine, Hernandez and doors #4 and 5 (some combo Perez, Williams, Humber, Pelfrey, Vargas) and hope Pedro comes back smoking at the all-star break. Apart from bidding more aggressively on Schmidt, I don't think I'd have done anything differently.

Article on Oliver Perez: http://www.sny.tv/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070124&content_id=1420075&oid=36018&vkey=9

A few things of note I took from that article:
- He lost about 6-8 MPH from his SD days to his pitt years (post 2004), partially because he insisted on changing arm slots so much that he struggles with consistancy.
- No pitcher has ever fared worse with "The Jacket" (aka rick peterson) then he has without. So clearly he knows what hes doing. Roberto Hernandez was a case in point in this piece.

Enjoy. And man if Ollie regains his form, we're cruising to the postseason again.

1 more thing about our offseason: $78.25M For 10 Years

Thats what Omar locked up Reyes and Wright for

Utley got 7 years, 85 million

This is why the man is one of the best in the game. He got Reyes and Wright signed before the market exploded. And to be honest with you it now looks like we will have a great shot at having both these kids here their entire careers which is nice since Tom Seaver needs some company in the HOF. It'll be nice when/if we can send 2 homegrown kids in there together one day and if they stay healthy and they continue with years like last year, we will be doing that one day :)

Prospect update: Fernando Martinez

From Metsblog:

Quote:
In his latest blog entry for ESPN.com, Keith Law presents the first annual Scouts Inc. top baseball prospects list.

Coming in at number six on his list is Mets outfield prospect Fernando Martinez...

"Martinez doesn't look or carry himself like a teenager, and had no trouble against Double-A and Triple-A pitchers in the Arizona Fall League. Plus glove in center as well."

Martinez, 18, was the youngest player to play in the AFL, where he batted .253 with 2 home runs in 85 at-bats.

In 2006, Martinez played at three different levels of the minor-leagues last year and hit a combined .279 with 10 home runs and a .793 OPS in 315 at-bats.

In a recent interview with Mets Blog, Jonathan Mayo of MiLB.com said Martinez's expected arrival date in the majors is 2010.

Barring something weird happening, he is going to be here before that
