Assuming that the powers-that-be can't get a new CBA hammered out by Friday, and assuming that NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw intends to force an uncapped year, it's critical for everyone -- including most importantly the players -- to understand what a year without a salary cap really means.

Here are the key points.

1. There will be no limit on what teams can spend on players, but there also will be no minimum, either. Currently, teams are required annually to spend at least 54 percent of the projected Defined Gross Revenues on player costs. In an uncapped year, teams can spend as little as they choose.

2. Only players with six or more accrued seasons will be eligible for unrestricted free agency. Players with three, four, or five accrued seasons will be restricted free agents. In other words, Bucs quarterback Chris Simms (who signed a one-year restricted free agent tender on Wednesday), will be a restricted free agent again in 2007. Under normal circumstances, he would be eligible for unrestricted free agency in 2007.

3. All teams will have an extra transition tag in 2007. Currently, teams can use either a franchise tag or a transition tag. So next year the teams will be able to restrict two otherwise unrestricted free agents.

4. The final four playoff teams from 2006 will be permitted to sign only their own unrestricted free agents. For each of their unrestricted free agents signed by someone else, they can replace them with an unrestricted free agent signed from another team.

5. The next four playoff teams will be subject to the same rules as the final four. They also will be able to sign one unrestricted free agent at a first-year salary of $1.5 million or more, and one at a first-year salary of less than $1 million (not including signing bonus), with increases of no more than 30 percent of the player's first-year salary.

The message here is that there are some significant limits to the cash bonanza that the players are expecting in 2007. It's another reason, in our opinion, for both sides to get the deal done.:dolphins:

Thanks...in other words, the players are being greedy like always but could come out worst by not making the deal...they should look at the overall picture....I hope they can work it out but is looking bad right now.

Ozzy rules!!

I love how it always the players that are greedy. Yeah its the players that are greedy, they make millions a year, no way the owners who make hundreds of millions a year are greedy.

Owner's are businessmen. They invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the game and make markets out of them. Even though they bring in quite a bit of money, do you think it comes at no cost? They have to pay for advertising, players, upgrades, stadiums, etc. I'm sure the owner of Starbucks doesn't want to pay his workers "million dollar contracts". NFL players are out there playing a game that they have played their entire life for FREE. Now all of a sudden they think they deserve millions upon millions of dollars? Why on earth do you need a guarenteed 9 million dollars a year to throw, catch, run, or block for 16 games??? Look at how much owners have invested over the past 20 years and look at how much the players have increased their "expected playing value" and tell me again who is greedy? Just remember, owner's are businessmen that invest in team markets, players just play a damn game that most of us do on the weekend to have fun and get away from work.

I feel you..but if somebody is making millions and millions of dollars off of YOU, You'd Definately want a piece of the pie as well. HOWEVER, the players ALREADY ARE getting a piece of the pie. A BIG PIECE! Actually it's BIGGER than what the Owners get. Now the Jerks (players) want MORE OF IT??

It's almost like the owners are saying.."NA, man..You can't have my CORNBREAD!" And the players are saying something like, "You better gimme yo cornbread or else"

I fear that the owners might try to do a lock out which would disrupt Sabans entire plan. If the owners were more financially responsible than there wouldn't need to be a salary cap.

The only people that get hosed in this kind of stuff is us.

Fans.

:tantrum: This would be the second time in my life there would be a lockout when something good was about to happen for me in sports. I'm a huge Griffey fan and he was chasing Roger Maris' home run record (before it was broken) and was on pace to pass him before the MLB strike. Now Miami seems to be making a run for a Superbowl within the next couple of years and its gunna be ruined by greed again. I once again reiterate the same concept I've stuck with this entire time ... I'm sick of money ruining sports :tantrum:

Let's see if I get you right: if you own a football team you do this as a business. But you should play - 10 years or so -and do not see it as a job but a hobby. Even if that hobby means that for half the year you can not do anything else and ruin your health. I have never been tackled by Zach Thomas but I would assume that after one of those I would not dare to tell players they should play just for fun

You've got your whole view on this twisted up. How can you say the owners have so much invested and the players do not?

The players have worked hard to get where they are. You said they
just play a damn game that most of us do on the weekend to have fun and get away from work
when in reality you are completely right and wrong at the same time.

There is a few minor details that you are overlooking.

1. They have been working at it their entire life.
2. They happen to train year-round and work their ***** off every day (not just show up and play)
3. They're better than you

Can you say that if you build a model airplane as a hobby that it qualifies you to build fighter planes for the US Military.

No, you cant! Because you didn't prepare your whole life to build planes. Therefore you cant demand the money that a plane builder can demand.

So saying that they just play a game is absurd. They are PROFESSIONAL athletes. If you discredit the work they put in to making this game so great, then you don't deserve to watch it, because you dont appreciate it.

NOW....to my point on this topic......

F! the owners!
F! the players!

It should be their responibility to get a deal in place to keep this sport the best of all sports of all time.

Both sides are deserving of money for the investments and impact they have on this game, but you cant become bigger than the game that gave you that power to even be great.

JUST BE FAIR! and if you cant be fair then you dont care...

If had a billion dollars and bought a team.. i would assume the players would just damn happy to be making money from a kids game. In any sport. Without me investing MY HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS... That player wouldn't have the life he has. As an owner.. you are going to go into business. to give all your money away. Thats called bad business. Some people think that just because we're talking big zeroes that the concept of ratios would be lost. Trust me... If was your team.. you'd be pissed.
As for players.. well.... multi million dollars to play a game.... shutup!

Bottom line, the players need to get what they deserve. These guys can be cut loose at the drop of a hat. The players are in no way greedy, but they need to come to an agreement with thte owners. NoCBA spells doom for this great league.

Jay Glazer just said w/out a deal, there is a possibility of NO NFL Draft in 08.
