wala! I turn on 790 and whats the first thing I hear? Tommy Maddox is close to signing a deal. There is your backup folks.

I just heard it too. I would like Griese as well, but I'm sure he wants to go somewhere where he would have a chance to start. I think Chicago is his best chance since Grossman has been injury prone his career.

I think Maddox would be a good veteran backup.

Maddox....

Let`s all cross our Fingers He never gets in a game.....

I'm ok with it as its likely to be a cheap deal, and Maddox is happy as a backup and won't pine for a starting job. It'd be nice to have a veteran backup who is around for a while, to get comfortable in the system and with the receivers.

I do think though that a camp battle for the no.2 job between Maddox and Lemon may be a possibility (if Lemon is any good), and it could turn out to be an interesting competition.

Maybe Saban is creating a little market for the two to see who wants to be a dolphin. But if Maddox is close to sigining. I think that is what we are getting.

The good side to this IMO is that we will draft a QB as well to groom for the future so Ill go out on a limb and say Whitehurst.

Griese will cost a ton, as will Collins, Brooks and Harrington. This is a wise, thrifty signing by Saban. It will have a minimal signing bonus and will allow us to continue to chase Arrington and other big FA names.

Also, this tells me Cleo Lemon has a legit chance to win the #2 job. Cool.

Dear God.. no!!! Maddox is awful!
Did you guys see him "play" last year?

I wouldn't sign Maddox until Greise was off the table.

EDIT: what am I saying? get Aaron Brooks. We'd have a similar style of play from our 1st to 3rd string QB

Aaron Brooks and Brian Griese were starters last year and will cost a LOT more than Maddox. Do you want to spend a lot on a backup, knowing that it will hinder our ability to sign other top FA's?

We cant just go and sign the best FA's at every position.

Not a big Maddox fan....I really don't like this signing.

I still don't get how the Lemon fans get that this guy has a shot at anything. There is nothing in his past to show the guy is capable. He's been cut from teams in the past had an avg. college career and was a backup in NFLE of all places. Actually Berlin of NFLE didn't even have him as a backup, he was placed on their practice squad.

Everyone points to a few drives in preseason games as a tell all that the guy is a talent. Hasn't everyone seen enough preseason "stars" playing in games against low level talent to know this just isn't telling of how good a player will be?

IMO he was picked up by the phins as a long term project and I see no chance of this kid being our primary backup.

Maddox is a good team player and could help with veteran leadership. I'm OK with the signing as long as he never touches the field.
