Ok I know that I will hear about how we need CC, Ogun, and others first, this I will agree. But in researching TE salaries McMichael who might not be in the top 5(thats debatable) but the franchise tag for a TE would be 2.6 million which as we all know is the average of the top 5 salaries for the position. If Randy isn't in the top 5 he is 6th or 7th. I checked on Crumpler's salary(AG is a player in the same ballpark talent and production wise) and AG is making $831,200, which is substantially more than Randys $433,125. This would be a very good price range for Randy as well as the Dolphins, if we wait and sign him after he has a great year and he warrants top 5 money we could be looking at nearly double that amount. While I know we have other priorities, we could use the money we save after we cut some of the OL that we have. $400,000 more shouldnt be that hard to come up with.(Quick question who is the highest paid TE in football?)

Not in 2003, last year the highest paid TE in football was Kyle Brady of the Jags @ 3.3 million Gonzo was 4th at 2.38 million Todd Heap wasnt even in the top 10 @ 1.22 million.

The team/FO seems to expect guys to honor their rookie contracts until they are RFA or UFA or at least close. So Randy has gotta wait in line behind the current crop of RFA, ie OGun and future UFA like Chambers

Randy McMichael will get paid when he learns how to block and/or becomes more consistent.

I like the kid, I see alot of potential and ability in him, but I see just as much potential in Donald Lee, and Lee hasn't gotten a chance to start yet. Dolphin fans overrate McMichael just a tad bit.

The guy started clammoring for a new contract after his second year? come on? he had what? 2 TD's last year?

Everyone's entitled to their opinion but I'm really confused how you can see Donald Lee having as much potential as McMike...
I don't know what you're basing this on but it can't be last year because Lee didn't show ANYTHING when it came to catching the football...
Reports out of mini-camp indicate he's looking very good but after last year's MC and TC reports of Derrious Thompson shining and CC struggling we should probably take this with a grain of salt..
Also downgrading Mcmike because he had 2 Td's last year is irrevelant:
Shockey was considered by most a top 3 TE in the NFL last year...
How many TD's did he have the year before?
2 TD's

Fins2theend you have to keep in mind that McMicheal was the 16th pick of the fourth round in 2002. Crumpler was the 4th pick of the second round in 2001. So not only was Crumpler a higher draft pick but he is also one year further into his contract.

A rookie's first contract depends more on perception than performance.

Do you have a link for Crumpler's cap number???

McMike will get his deal, just not this year. CC and Ogun are first.

This idea that McMichael can't block only proves that those with this opinion don't pay attention to what actually happens on the field. They instead stick with the scouting reports of the player when they come out of college.

Randy McMichael is a fundamentally sound and effective blocker. He's a better blocker right now than Shannon Sharpe has ever been, and he's also a better blocker than Jeremy Shockey at this point as well.

I agree with the premise that it would be in the team's advantage to lock up RM now if the price is right and if it doesn't interfere with signing/extending other players whose deals come first. I just don't know if it's really possible that it would work out that way...

It would be stupid to give McMichael a new deal now. He has 2 years left on his deal, so we have no reason to give him a new deal. He may want one, but he won't get it. We shouldn't even think about his contract until next year.

You my friend are more wrong than anyone that has posted in this board. First of all, Randy McMichael will forever wish to block as well as Shockey. Shockey can block and catch and it seems that you seen him play no more than once and even in that game I can gurantee you that he overpowered whicheve linebacker he had on his face. Shannon Sharpe? How do you think he is who he is today? He started off solid blocking and great special teams play then moved up to the starting roster at tight end and dominated for years.

Now, I have seen all these players play in college for the exception of Shannon Sharpe. Randy McMichael does not block well enough or consistent enough and is often overpowered in the line. Please don't pull any comments out of your piehole, I see too much of this in all the boards. Crank up some dolphin tapes and watch them carefully. However I think his blocking is well enough to serve a platter of food. However don't compare it with the blocking of much stronger guys than him.

Whatever.

Jeremy Shockey gets too high and rarely gives an effort to his blocking. Shannon Sharpe is strictly a positioning blocker.

Randy McMichael has better form than both, and is more effective than both because he actually gives effort when blocking. I've seen Randy pin quite a few defenders on their backs on some big run plays for Ricky. Quit believing everything you read on the scouting reports.
