Let me just say that I love our team and have been a die-hard dolphins fan for over 21 years!!!! I root for my team til the end and I always believe that every year could be our year.

I do have a problem with our offensive philosophy though. Many people believe that it all starts up front with the O-Line (which I agree with) so that we can get Rickey the ball 25+ carries and he must average 4 YPC. I don't agree with this. If he keeps carrying like that, he's not going to last very long in this league because of all the pounding he's going to take. I'd rather he get less carries and more YPC so that he's fresh for the playoffs. In order for that to happen, our passing game is going to have to step up and not just manage the game for us but dictate it at times. Wannstedt's philosophy is keep it tight til the 4th quarter (that is why running the ball 25+ times with Rickey is so important to him). We need to get more aggressive and open it up so that we can put teams away earlier. I want to have games where our backups get playing time because the outcome is already at hand.

I think your main problem with our offensive Philosophy is that you don't understand it and the Dolphins have not fully installed it.

Wannstedts stated philosophy is not to keep it close and win in the fourth quarter. That is the reality of when playing a good team...you have to have the right mentality to win the game in the fourth quarter...because that is where the game is ultimately won.

Our current offensive philosophy is a run first (Ricky centered), balanced (play-action passing), field position style (minimal mistakes), and opportunistic passing game (take 4 or 5 shots down the field...use the TE to expose the middle of the field). The passer needs to be accurate. We need play-makers at the WR, TE, & RB spots.

Furthermore, our offense needs to be able to control the clock. If they can't stop Ricky, it destroys there will to be on the field. The combination of time of possession, field position, great defensive play, & special teams is the slow crush that breaks down the opposition and forces them to take risks and make mistakes.

Our offensive design is balanced. It's not all QB (sorry QB lovers). It's not all RB. It values the offensive line and the play-making ability of the #1 WR and TE. This offense must be able to run and pass to have balance. The last couple years the offense has not been balanced enough. It requires more pass completions to adhere to the balanced philosophy. It requires less predictability to adhere to a balanced philosophy.

I think Wanny knows his past philosophy doesnt work that well which is why they got some guys to open it up some more. That said I think our offense wont look the same as it did last year. They tried to go down the field some times but Jay overthrew even Mcknight as fast as he is.

I think every team's "offensive design" is balanced but what is actually done on the field may differ from that design. How many games did we have last year in which Ricky had to run over 30+? This is hardly the " balanced offensive design" the dolphins we're expecting when we got Norv who is supposedly an offensive guru. All I'm saying is that our offense needs to be more aggressive and not rely on Ricky to carry so much of the load because just like other backs who were bruisers and carried such a big load (Earl Campbell) he's going to break down.

I don't believe Wanny thinks his past philosophy is vulnerable. It can and has been beaten.
It is obvious to everyone in the league from the owner down to the fan that we try to run what Dallas ran when they won those super bowls with Jimmah.

I think that today's defenses are too evolved to consistently win with that type of offense without serious modification. I don't think that offense alone can win it all...I think it has to be more flexible...have some surprises. Just pounding Ricky doesn't work. The passing game in our offense has to be more versatile...bring in a four wide package from time to time to mix it up.
Allow Ricky to run from a single back set at times...we can spread the field and utilize his speed a lot better. Use Konrad's speed better.

There are a lot of options. Wanny has to get away from his own tendencies that create third and long situations.
Hopefully the new additions to the offensive staff will add more wrinkles to help the offense morph from vanilla to something akin to Rocky Road.

What offensive philosophy???....

We have one???...

PHINZ RULE!!!

Now that's funny given the events that unfolded yesterday and the fact that nobody seemed quite sure exactly what the offense was going to be other than it would use terminology from Norv's offense.

:roflmao:

This conversation makes me yearn for Shoes....

Anyway, enough daydreaming....

Our OP has been well stated by a couple of posts already...a slight modification of the JJ/Dallas era, but it is not wrong. Yes defenses have evolved...they are much faster than when JJ was in Dallas. That is why we cannot just pound the ball with Ricky and expect to win every game. What we need to be able to do is keep defenses off balance. I hate to say this, but that is exactly what the Patsie's offense does. They keep the defenses guessing. If the OL does improve (which I believe it will) it will benefit whoever is in at QB. It will allow the WRs and RM to stretch the field. It will then allow RW more room inside to run and then if he runs 30+ times a game, it won't be like last year's runs for 3 yards a pop...there will be some of those 15-20 yard variety that rack up the yds for RW and move the sticks...If the defenses don't have to key on RW...we will be a better offense. Improving the OL, getting a better WR in is a start for this...This makes our other weapons (CC, RM. RK, RW as a reciever) more productive...

You want to see this offensive philosophy at work? Pop in a tape and watch the Dallas Cowboys of the early 90s.
