Ask Brett Tessler

Hey there, Brett. Not sure if this is has been brought up before, but I would be interested to hear any thoughts you might have as to what kind of pressure/spotlight is on the agent for the number 1 overall pick in the draft. Just curious if there is a point where the agent's motives in a career-defining moment like that ever become significant factors unto themselves in negotiating the player's initial deal.

Whoever represents the #1 overall pick in the draft is sort of that year's "king of the mountain". The entire rookie salary structure begins with the contract that agent negotiates. If it's bad, every player all the way down to the last guy drafted feels the ripple effect. Also, when you're at the top you always have everybody beneath you going after you.

Not going to ask for names, but what is the highest (earliest) # pick you have represented? Unless you can't give out even that, which I would understand.

Brett, I wish you could help me with contract details for my cap pages :(

Have any of your clients talked with the Bills this FA season?

Yes, Corey McIntyre, a restricted free agent from Atlanta is visiting Buffalo tomorrow. He was Atlanta's Special Teams Captain last year and could be a great starting fullback in this league. He wasn't drafted, so Buffalo wouldn't have to give anything up to sign him away.

At the start of free agency nobody's cheap. When a team goes 1-15 there are obviously numerous holes to fill so the team is much better off picking up a handful of decent players who might not be household names instead of a guy like Randy Moss who will cost a fortune and won't make a difference right now. Parcells is doing it perfectly. Get a bunch of puzzle peices now, and then finish it off with the big name guys when the team is ready to go all the way in another year or two (or three).

Well said Brett!! I agree 100%
Build a foundation, than add the accessories!

thanks for the input, and welcome back:hi5:

hey brett .. congratulations for the jesse chatman deal.

did the dolphins actually tried to keep him or was it clear that chatman had no future in miami?

Being as my hands are full with veteran clients right now, I didn't do a whole lot of college recruiting this year. The one player that I did go after and sign is Gary Cismesia, the kicker from FSU who is the ACC's all-time leading kicker and nailed a 60 yarder this season!

He will be a great kicker in the NFL. Good job!

Congrats on Jesse Chatman

Congrats on getting Jesse Chatman a nice contract. I hope he does well, and wish him the best.

This should be an excellent opportunity for Jesse to show the Jets what we already know he can do if called upon.

Thanks for everybody's kind words on Chatman. Yes, the Dolphins wanted to keep him but the opprtunity in New York just made more sense. I spoke to Jeff Ireland the day we decided to leave and when I explained our reasons he understood and wished Jesse the best of luck.
