Marino question

Well were on the subject of Marino in his prime, and since I was born in 83, I've always been curious as to what happened the season after Marino broke all the records. The one where Miami lost to the Patriots in the AFC championship game?

They are the only ones to beat the Bears and then they go and lose to the Pats, and then that same Pats team goes on to completely suck in the SB? Why didn't Miami win? And could they have beaten the Bears again in the SB?

Would appreciate it if you could enlighten me a bit, thanks.

I don't think anyone who saw the Bears/Fins game can not say that Marino was unleashed by Shula, and Shula said "quote- That was the best quartebacked game I've ever seen". That would be hard to repeat against a very good Bears defense. Plus, a few plays were abit of "the luck of the bounce" so to speak. that was a great game for MNF, and will go down in Fins history as one of the greatest ever. The Pats/Fins games have always been, irregardless of record, just intense and competitive. They always will be, just like the Jets and Bills. Division games just have that nature. Could the Fins have beaten the Bears again that year? Guess nobody will ever know, but it would have been a great game! :D

Some names that deserve mention that also caught a lot of Marino passes:

TE Joe Rose, Keith Jackson
WR Irving Fryer, Randall Hill, James Ingram
RB Jim Jensen,Keith Byars

You guys who missed out on him playing need to find some old tapes. It was a thing of beauty. He was the best ever, no doubt.

Oh yes. 1983-85. Any tapes of Marino in these years will illuminate the younger set on how the QB position should be played. Marino in his youth was absolutely incredible to watch and could do no wrong. In his later years he lost his arm strength and was a shell of his former self.

In 1985 Marino held out and came to camp late. He may have even missed the first game or two, I forget. But in '85 he wasn't nearly as overwhelming as he was in 1984. The team finished up well and won the division, then came back from 21-3 down vs. Cleveland in the Divisional playoffs late in the 3rd quarter to win 24-21. The next week turnovers and the inability to stop the run killed them against the Patriots.
That Monday Night game was magic. Had Miami gone to the Super Bowl, I think it would have been the Bears winning anyway. '85 was just the Bears year, though I don't think Miami would have gotten embarrassed the way New England did, I still doubt they could have won, to be honest.

Not only was the Bears-Dolphins game in '85 something of "lightning in a bottle", there was also a match-up question. The vaunted Bears defense had not seen a pass offense anywhere near as potent as Marino. They tried to do things that they had always done and were crunched. Marino lead the Phins to scores on the first five possesions. It was very sweet!

If you are into Dolphin history, you might want to order a copy of the Dolphin media guide. It is a wealth of information and reasonably priced at around $$12-$15 plus shipping. I get mine each year from the Dolphins Pro Shop in Davie.

LOL, I have an old jersey signed by Super Marc Duper before he got heavily into coke and had to do sattelite TV comercials...

BTW- does anyone know who that Bears team crushed in the Superbowl that year? :D

History Class in Session!

Okay, first the wr starters in 84 were Duper and Clayton with Jimmy Cefalo and Nat Moore off the bench. In 85 Cefalo retired and we got Tim Virgorito back from Injury and coverited hin to WR from RB.The running game was supposed to be taken over in 84 by David Overstreet but he died in a car accident in the offseason. So we went with Nathan again. Rookie Joe Carter was great in reserve and Started in the Houston game and came up big at New England. The Jets game where Nat Moore was coptered was not the Monday Nighter as mentioned in an earlier post but a 3:00pm Meadowlands game in NOV 84. In 85 Dan did hold out in TC. He started the opener which we lost in Houston. Also that season was the 2nd without DC Armsparer and was in full decline ranked 23rd. The hated Raiders were the 1 seed in the playoffs in 85 but were upset AT HOME by the Pats in the semis. That left us VS the PATS in the championship game in MIAMI (the Pats hadn't won there since the 60's when they callled Boston). The game was played in Slopppy wet field conditions with the game temp in the 60's -good for pats bad for us. Nathan Fumbled on the first poss. Pats convert for 7. With NE playing Miami to pass that game we should have been able to run. Joe Carter just had a melt down, he fumbled at least 3 times himself. 34-14 Pats ouch babe!

I recommend the vidao about Marino to anyone. Should be easily available on eBay. Very, very good look at Marino.
