Gah! Bad Kharma from ESPN NFL 2k5

You're right. I haven't.

So tell me, what makes XBox Live so much better than PS2 online that it is worth paying $50 a year for when PS2 online is free?

Because I say so? :D

Not good enough? Okay, you know that expression about "you get what you pay for"? Not always true, but as a general rule it is accurate.

With Xbox Live you get a Gamertag, unique to you, that with your Friends List allows you to know which of your friends is online, what game they are playing, and you can invite them into another game or join them. You can voice message them as part of your invite. Say you play a great game of online football and want to play the guy again, you send an invite and they can accept it and be on your list. It is very easy to meet up online and play. This applies to EVERY Live game on the Xbox. Not just say, the EA sports games.

There are other featurest Microsoft is adding all the time. Right now you can jump on your Xbox and just go to Chat and talk away to your friends. Later you will be able to buy an optional camera to allow video chat (I've got mixed feelings about that :D )

Everyone on Xbox Live is broadband only. This cuts the laggy games down to a minimum. Remember you can talk back and forth too. I played a lot on the old Dreamcast on a 56K modem, and it worked well at times, and other times it was unplayable due to lag. Lost connections are rare on the Xbox too.

Then there are the extra game levels, updated rosters, new vehicles, and yes, even patches that Xbox Live provides. The Xbox hard drive makes all that possible. Most of it is free, some costs about $5 if you want it. Downloads give new life to older games, and keep the sports rosters accurate.

Cheaters and cheezers got you down? You can avoid those punks by reporting back on every guy you play against. A few people have been banned for racial slurs and other things like that. No one can ruin a game and not get negative feedback on their Gamertag. This always catches up to the guy. The only way they can do it again is to buy another year of Xbox Live and cheeze away again, but that gets pretty expensive. Again, if a game has some glitch, the developer can usually patch it to correct it.

For the money, which comes out to less than $6/month even if you are buying the starter kit and barely more than $4/month if you just renew your Gamertag, it is well worth it. Xbox Live has hit 1 million subscribers and growing everyday. Buy an Xbox Live game, and most come with a coupon for two FREE months of Xbox Live. So you can get 14 months of Xbox Live for the price of 12.

Now, EA supporting Live is HUGE. EA put a lot of money and effort into their own servers and online service (especially on the PS2) but seeing how Xbox Live has taken off, they bowed to consumer pressure. I would probably have bought Madden last year, if it had been playable on Live. I will get ESPN 2K5 for sure, and maybe Madden after the price drops to $30 or so.

Whether a game is playable online is usually a big factor in my buying it or not. Online play adds a lot of replay value to most games. Certainly in the sports games, where there is no substitute for a human opponent. Every system needs online play. You listening Nintendo?

Oh, just for the record, if you have to buy the PS2 modem/Ethernet adaptor, which is $40? That alone pays for most of your Xbox Live service. The Xbox comes with everything you need, not to mention a hard drive, right out of the box. The PS2 HD will cost you about $90? Add in the cost of memory cards versus the Xbox HD and you are saving another $15 or more?

Xbox + Xbox Live is cheaper than PS2 + HD + Network Adaptor + memory card.

so what do you guys think is it a good game or not? how does it compare to madden im gonna buy it either way but would appreciate your input how are the graphics and is miami any good?

Man there both so good i dont kno wut to do. Im certainly going to buy both, but if there both good i dont kno which one im gonna b playin more. Madden has been better evry year in my oppinion, and by wut ive seen its gonna stay tht way. But ESPN is still a good game none the less. Those clips of the game, the SC thing looks awesome, but like always the game play just didnt look quite as good as maddens. The Oline Dline interaction is just to slow making the rtunning game to predictable. Overall its too hard for anyone to say right now which one is betetr. How the hell do u guys kno alrdy?

Thanks man, there was lots of good info in there.

To tell you the truth, you were right when you said I didn't know much about the X Box. I wasn't trying to put it down, I was just trying to find out if what I had heard was true. And that's why I asked what exactly made X Box Live worth paying for. I still don't know if I would pay for it, but I'm glad I know what I would be getting if I did.

I've had my PS2 for about 5 (maybe 6) years now and the kids have put a hurtin' on it so I'm going to be in the market for a new system soon. I just have to decide if it is worth starting all over from scratch with a new system when I already have so many PS2 games.

Not a problem. I hear people complain loudly about having to pay for online play, but those are the ones who never tried Xbox Live. Hey, I'd LOVE if it was FREE, but for what I'm getting it is money well spent. :)

Changing systems can be tough. I've always kept my old ones (Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, a PSX, two Dreamcasts, two Xboxs) and just added new ones. There are always a couple games I can still go back and play for each one.

The thing with buying a new system is the "hidden" costs. I love the multi-player games so I just have to have four controllers. You can drop almost $100 on those. With the Xbox, you don't really need to buy a memory card (or cards as ONE is never enough). I've got a massive amount of game saves, some like KOTOR (Knight of the Old Republic -best Star Wars RPG ever) which take up about 24MB PER SAVE. That would be equal to three regular 8MB memory cards. Nevermind the almost 30 hours of custom music soundtracks, around 600MB of downloads from Xbox Live in news cars, mechs, maps, etc. and there is still plenty of room left.

That Hard drive is probably the best single feature about the Xbox, and funny how fast I've gotten used to having it there. :D

Oh, I forgot to mention that if you buy the Xbox Live starter kit, which comes with the headset so you can talk, the current ones also come with an online game. It used to be a sample disk, then Mechassult, currently it is Crimson Skies. A pretty fun, arcade-type flying game. A $30 game included for free.

If you ever get an Xbox, Halo is a must own. KOTOR if you are an RPG guy, though the PS2 has the Xbox beat easily in the RPG genre. Other than that, the Xbox has a pretty solid library of games. With EA fully on board Xbox Live especially.

After edit: One more thing I forgot about. If you do get a memory card (I grabbed one on clearance for $10) you can transfer most game saves from Xbox to Xbox. Even better, you can save your Gamertag profile and take it with you. I've gone over to a friends house and signed in with my Gamertag off that memory card. So you can use anyones Xbox to play online. As long as they have a broadband connection. So, I could fly across the country, jump on an Xbox, and play with my Gamertag, see my friends list, etc.

I refuse to own an Xbox due to the fact that Microsoft is a life sucking vampire of a monopoly. Did you know that Microsoft selling their system at $300 was loosing about $50 per system they sold? That's a monopoly at it's finest... using its cash horde (gained from visciously putting competetors out of business) to gain entry into a market and immediatly start undercutting established entities.

What you fail to realize is that you are just digging yourself a grave. Microsoft may keep things nice and cheap for now, but I suspect they will follow the trends that they have established with their other products. In 1995 when Microsoft had heavy competition from OS/2 Warp, MacOS, and others the cost of Windows 95 was around $80. Office 95 was about the same. Fast forward to 2001, Microsoft has put OS/2 and for the most part MacOS out of the operating system business. Result? Windows XP(2002) costs $199.99 (over a 200% increase). They did the exact same with MS Office (cost around $100 in '95) increasing the price to $399.99 for the most basic version.

Look forward to the day that Nintendo is out of business, and Microsoft has negotiated contracts with all video game publishers that their games may only be released for xbox. Soon after Xbox will cost $500-600 and you'll prolly pay $80-120 per game.

Why must we all be blind sheep emptying our wallets into Micro$oft's evil hands? :fire:

Yeah, everytime I look at a PS2, I FEEL the love from Sony. They never wanted my money, only to build a system that I could enjoy.

That must be why I'd have to pay extra for a multi-tap adaptor because the PS2 only has two controller ports, right? $20 extra?

Or how they will sell me the network adaptor seperate, for $40?

Or how I can get that hard drive for a mere $90?

I still have to buy memory cards too, huh? So, at least two of those for $30?

Wow, what a fool I was. Buying into the idea that just because my Xbox came with all those things, that Microsoft wasn't actually ripping me off!!

Sony cares. Microsoft is evil. It's black and white, night and day right?

On a less sarcastic note, I do believe Microsoft wants to make money. They didn't get into videogames just for fun. Thing is, I believe Sony is doing the same thing. Would I love to see Sony gone? No. Competition is good. Microsoft has taken advantage of its postion, and no doubt would do so with videogames given half a chance.

Sorry though, but Sony would do the exact same thing. As would 95% of all companies out there. In fact, Sony used hype and money to destroy Sega and the Dreamcast. Then released a console that had incredible new gameplay features like... uh, better graphics and uh.... played DVDs?

Sony dominated the market with the PSX, then offered nothing innovative with the PS2. That is why I dislike them and their system. Sony only got busy with online games after Microsoft began preparing Xbox Live.

Sony has shown they would do the minimum to advance gaming, and nickel and dime everyone for every extra bit of hardware if left alone with the videogame market to themselves. I dig myself no grave. If Sony steps it up with the PS3 and offers better features, I'll buy one. I just find it ironic how much Sony fans have benefited from Microsoft's competition, yet the Xbox and Microsoft are "evil" and Sony the good guys?

Ok... last reply lest we get this moved into the political forum:

Sony may be guilty of this as well, however I find that they do not generally use predatory tactics to further their company. Microsoft has been guilty of this on many fronts, and I fear that video game consoles are their next conquest. I find it interesting that you bring up innovation in your reply... Microsoft is guilty of this as well. Since Windows 95, I can count on one hand the innovative things that Microsoft has done with any of their products. Instead they apply a few cosmetic changes, patch up a few of the endless flaws with their product and charge you another $90 to upgrade. I cannot speak to the innovation that Microsoft will bring to the console gaming industry in the future, but I can attest that they have yet to bring any. The gaming console you love so dearly is simply a PC that you hook up to your computer. The motherboard is an Nvidia Nforce with the keyboard/monitor/etc ports removed... the controllers are modified USB ports... Hell, even the software the thing runs is an NT kernel. Yes, Sony is after your money... and yes, Microsoft may be cutting you a great deal... for now. I have no reason to believe that they will not follow the same policy for this industry as they have for their others. I hope dearly that my prediction does not come true, but no one thought they'd take over the entire computer industry either.

One reason why Windows is so expensive now is because of piracy...
