*** Tannehill's Comeback Mega Thread ***

Culpepper's and Tannehill's situations are not comparable.

1) Culpepper started falling off before his injury.

2) Culpepper tore his ACL, PCL, and MCL

3) Culpepper never properly finished rehabbing his knee.

I mean they are certainly comparable. Just because it isn’t a verbatim situation does not make them ineligible for comparison.

They both had knee injuries, they both had setbacks recovering from those knee injuries and they both play their best football when they are able to utilize their mobility to make plays happen. They were/are both a Dolphin quarterbacks.

As far as falling off. Culpepper started 2005 horrendous, maybe the adjustment to Losing Moss required some time but he got hurt in the first half of the season . . . but he was coming off arguably one of the greatest statistical season a QB ever had at that time.

And while Landry is no Moss, as a player and skill set, that was still Ryan’s guy and we still need to see how that adjustment unfolds.

Ryan has not had the career Culpepper has had up to this point, but he was on the upswing certainly . . . .but it will have been 20 months since we have legit seen that guy in a real game.

All I am saying is, this air of confidence by some of the fan base and this regime is overblown and a bit unwarranted IMO. Said the same thing last off-season when the same vibes were happening.

I'm glad the Dolphins didn't take a QB after the top 5 went. The last thing this franchise needs it to have Tannehill fail then go into next season with the mentality of letting the new guy (3rd round who dat QB) have a go and passing on another 1st round QB n the next draft. If Tannehill succeeds then all is well if he fails or wrecks that knee again...go get your QB in round one on the 2019 draft.

With hopefully a new regime . . . So all in all it will have been worth something I guess.

I think that is the idea...

Overall t seems like they are making moves to benefit this season wth a little vision on the future. Granted, grabbing a QB in rounds 3-5 would have been nice from a upside backup potential, but if it would be something to prevent the team from getting the right guy (who would come into a decent situation) in the next draft then I am pass. I am also a huge Gase fan, I think he the first coach we have had in a long time that has the mind to compete with some of the best, but if his plan, which this is 100% what he wants (offseason moves) and if fails...well you want a coach to be able to come in and have the option to take his guy in round 1.

That's fair - but there is decidedly a difference in these sorts of injuries. Not every knee injury is the same - Gronk blew out two tendons in his knee and came back BETTER. Dustin Keller's knee injury was so bad he never played again.

More importantly is this - and this is what I really don't understand:

This is a Miami Dolphins fan board. It's not a medical forum, or an exercise in logical debate. We are supposed to be optimistic. Or if you want to make the argument that "Don't tell me to be optimistic, I can be a realist if I want" - fine. But we're certainly allowed to be optimistic.

If you want to temper your expectations, I get it. But I swear if I see one more thread (this is not toward you directly or specifically) with the intent to sway everyone's opinion away from optimism, I'm gonna lose it. Enough of this "everyone hold your horses" or "let's come down from from the clouds to my perceived version of reality" nonsense.

NO.

I am also a Gase fan which is why I wanted to play to his strengths and utilize a reasonable asset/assets at QB to strengthen the unit.

But it’s more than clear he does not want to do that so like you if it does not work out a new coach, GM and regime need to be in place for a potential fresh start.

We don’t know what we have with Ryan until live bullets start. It has been 20 months since his last real action. You can’t replicate Sunday away from Sunday.

IMO, the 20 months thing is over blown. He missed the 2017 season due to a knee injury before the first game. Period. He missed the last 3 weeks of the 2016 season but was practicing fully again at the start of 2017. His situation is no different than any player who gets hurt early in the season. How long has it been since McMillan has played in a real game? Nobody mentions it.

We are supposed to be optimistic? It’s a message board like you said, where we come for discussion.

Have you seen the board . . . It’s full of optimism, hell Brock Osweiller farted twice at OTAs and people are excited about him.

And you can be optimistic all day, I have been much more optimistic over the last 12 years than not.

But me showing concern at the direction of the way things are going is more than justified. I haven’t been able to taste a playoff victory since I was in high school . . . .and I am 35 now.

Part of that failure comes from wasting picks on QBs.

That part where I said this wasn't directed at you specifically, and the caveat about you can "be a realist" if you want?

This is why. I'm not trying to tell you what to do. But this is a thread specifically geared toward Tannehill's comeback. The threads that were merged for that purpose were generally optimistic. So there's going to be a lot of that tone.

And yes, I totally get it. I'm young enough that I can't remember the Super Bowl victories, but old enough to remember them getting very, very close and failing. It gets difficult to be optimistic every year. But right now is sure a damn sight better than last August at this point, wouldn't you say?

Hey it’s not a perfect science.

Cam Cameron was a Supposed offensive guru and we all jumped on board when he decided on a 26 year old QB.

Henne was a good pick and honestly was very Tannehillesque as a starter and several OCs in his Dolphins career.. He suffered a season ending injury and the team broke ties. He still had managed to be a mainstay backup and in the league a decade.

White was a Parcells wet dream, a gadget guy for the wildcat.

Failure is no reason to stop trying to improve at the most important position on the field.

We get through August with Tannehill looking somewhat sharp and healthy . . . I will start feeling better.

Until then any optimism about the QB position will be extremely reserved from me.

But going forward I will avoid bringing up the regimes QB decisions in this thread and keep it about a Ryan. He does deserve that.

We wouldn't have been trying to improve the most important position on the field (starting QB). We would have been trying to improve backup QB at the expense of other positions with players that the front office may not believe are any better than what we already have.

Understood, fair, and very well said.

What do you think has changed? Does an ACL injury make him slower or weaker? The time away should help mentally, so what do you expect?
I think his point is, we don't know. He might be more wary of staying in the pocket as it collapses. He might not have his mobility etc. A big injury like that is sure to be in the back of his mind, regardless of how tough he has shown himself to be in the past.
