Slimm's 2019 Quarterbacks (underclassman)

Another day for Dwayne Haskins in terms of pure accuracy. I saw him miss three passes today. One didn't count on the official play sheet.

That puts him 42 of 53 for 546 yards, 9 TDs and 1 INT after two games.

This is not an atypical way for a good QB to start out the year, but that's usually because Weeks 1 and 2 are the weeks where you end up playing FCS opponents. Oregon State and Rutgers are not good but they're still FBS. Rutgers had just beaten another FBS team 35-7 the week before. Oregon State put a beatdown on an FCS team today.

I also understand there's a lot of system stuff going on here. Tate Martell has been in the game and completed 13 of 14 passes to date. The difference between the two is pretty obvious, in terms of how quickly and decisively the ball comes out.

Still, this accuracy and consistency on Haskins is a cut above the group. And I get the feeling we haven't really seen what he can do as a play-maker because he hasn't really been challenged yet.

Haskins first touchdown of the day was flawless. Receiver didn’t miss a step on a 50 yard bomb

What do you guys think of Steven Montez out of Colorado. He played well today against Nebraska. He had command of that offense to beat Nebraska in the final minutes.

Montez is the most improved quarterback on this list from last year in my opinion. He has everything he needs to warrant being a high draft pick. However, he has to hold it together and keep from falling apart and turning the football over against good (ranked) opposition like he typically does. If he can do that, he establishes himself as more than a nice looking project. He took a big step towards that Saturday in Lincoln.

I have a man crush on Tua Tagovailoa. That kid is a gem of a qb. He’s my personal fave qb in the college ranks.

He's good. I also like Fromm of course.

But neither are draft eligible.

I think Dwayne Haskins may be destined for QB1 status if he comes out in 2019.

Burrow is physically superior to Mayfield in every category. He was ahead of JT Barrett last season until he broke his hand. Teammates nicknamed Burrow Tom Brady junior. He’ll be an elite prospect.

Not to jump on this because Mayfield just had a good game, but speaking only of the comments about physical traits, you're very wrong. Burrow has a sub-standard NFL arm. Mayfield has a very good arm - speaking only of strength. If you count accuracy, which I'd say you should, it's not even close.

Again, nothing to do with last-night's game - just obvious things on college tape.

The main thing that makes Burrow an NFL prospect is the fact that he very well may be the best game manager at quarterback I've seen in college in a long time. Game management is a skill, and Burrow is an elite game manager already - which is impressive when you acknowledge that he has no real starting experience. Half the QB's playing in the NFL right now can't manage the game the way Burrow can. It's the details, and Burrow gets it. Players like him don't even need a coach.

He's certainly not an elite prospect, but he'll have a longer NFL career than a few that are.

Best QB in college football.
One of the stats I look at when it comes to the draft is how he performs on third down. Tua hasn't thrown an incompletion on third down this season.

The fact he's a true freshman is crazy.

He's a sophomore. The only thing I ever worry about with Tua are road games - because his arm is illegal in 26 states.

Nah, I’ll take Haskins.

I’m going to start early and bang my drum for Tua until that kid comes eligible for the draft. He just gets it done. Tua to Miami in 2020 please.

I think it was Mia Kimes who compared Tua's emergence for Alabama to the Warriors signing Kevin Durant. I know a lot of people don't like the idea of a team being so much better than everyone else, but I always enjoy it, because it brings history into the equation. Obviously, Alabama's run over the last few years has already been historic, but this team looks like they have a real chance to be in the discussion for top 2 or 3 college teams of all time. Long season to go, but their ceiling is certainly in that range. Giving Nick Saban a star QB is unfair in the most entertaining way.

Dwayne Haskins receivers killed him with drops in the first half vs Penn St. Pinpoint throws into incredible spots that were flat out dropped. However, his weaknesses as a young and undeveloped prospect were also exposed, as they were against TCU.

Where Haskins struggles is when he's forced off his mark and has to move. He hasn't developed this part of his game yet. His mechanics break down and his footwork is shoddy when he has to move in the pocket. His footwork is really not great in general to be honest, which makes the phenomenal accuracy he's able to throw with all the more impressive. Has a bad habit of not stepping into his throws after he gets pressured a few times. Secondly, he has to learn to reset his feet to throw when he's forced to move off his mark because of pressure. You have to understand that you're going to take some shots sometimes when you do this, but it's just part of what it takes to play the position at an elite level.

Furthermore, he had a play or two where he had a receiver running wide open down the seam but wouldn't hang in there after he was made uncomfortable.

They basically screened Penn St. to death in the 2nd half to come back and win. Most of those yards Haskins accumulated we're all a credit to RAC by the receivers and backs.

Haskins is an extremely talented young QB with rare natural accuracy and touch. And when I say accuracy - I mean accuracy. Sees the entire field easily for such an inexperienced quarterback. But still has a lot of development ahead of him as he gains experience. Once he gets his footwork ironed out, along with working on resetting his feet, he'll become a much more consistently dominant performer.

Should all come in time, but I don't expect him to declare for the draft. He's not ready for that. Lots of growth that needs to happen first. I'm going to drop him behind Justin Herbert as an NFL prospect, as Herbert has improved significantly from last season, and continues to fill in the blanks that I felt he had in regards to earning a top 20 grade as a prospect. Although not perfect himself, he's the best QB prospect in this draft.

I think the hand size issue I mentioned with Fromm showed a little bit today. He had 3 fumbles in the first half - one was picked up and ran in for a TD by Nauta. Running back fell on another one. Another one coming from under center but was negated by a procedure penalty on Riley Ridley before the snap.

Struggled throwing the football down the field this year. Actually got benched for a while in favor of Justin Fields, who I've believed since spring ball is a more dangerous and talented player for UGA. I think he's probably the future for Smart whenever he decides the time is right.
