Why Didn't The Dolphins Have To Kick The Pat After Their Walk-off Td??

The two point conversion did not exist in the NFL until 1994. The only play available for the PAT was a kick. This you had to long snap it anyway.

Actually, you were allowed to run or pass the ball in for a 1-point score for the PAT back in those days. I saw it happen, especially when the kicker was injured or the kick was blocked. So the QB could have lined up under center and kneeled. Nothing forced you to kick the ball.

That is true that nothing forced you to kick the ball but in 1989 there was also no down side to doing so. Until recently, the opposing team could not return a blocked extra point for a two point score. Thus was absolutely no risk to kicking the extra point with no time remaining.

Given the situation you mentioned -- that a returned blocked EP is worth two points -- then there is absolutely no reason to kick it and every reason to go for two and kneel.

Have you met our coaching staff and others like it around the league?

But Buffalo could have kneeled too but didn't. There is no rule that says you must kick instead of kneel.
The return rule wasn't in effect then. If it was blocked, there was no return.

Good point! Buffalo still showed Miami up though by kicking a meaningless PAT.

I'm guessing the end of last year's (saints/vikings?) playoff game helped get them to get it. The one where it took like 10 minutes to get the teams back out there

Wait, Isn't it possible for the extra point to be blocked and the other team has the opportunity to return it for a score?
No. The other team can’t score on the extra point. Once they turn the ball over the play is dead.

Learn something new everyday. Was that a rule change? I thought I remember back in the day years ago seeing INTs after a 2 pt attempt and the player just dropping the ball and the play dead
They changed it i think a season before they moved the XP back
