Howard Officially Among League’s Best, But Does He Fit In Dolphins’ Long-term Plans?

Really like him but what's the price teams are willing to pay? Anything is on the table at this point. We are going into a full rebuild. The time is now if we are going to trade him. We don't have a QB on this team right now. We are looking at a terrible defensive line. We need oline help as well. Those three position groups should be rebuilt before making him the highest paid QB in the league. With that said, it depends on what he can bring in trade value which I'm not sure what he would fetch. I wouldn't do it for anything less than a first but I don't think he gets that much love. Now if we can package him to move up in this current draft to pickup Murray or a Tua next year that's where we are cooking with something.
But how many first round picks have yielded a player nowhere near as good as X? We have a really good young player. I don't think getting rid of him is a good plan.

If having a top flight cornerback doesn't fit into your team's plans, uhhh, maybe your team's plans are really, really stupid?

Definitely.

Howard is beyond elite, dude literally wins game's.

When all other corner's are praying the QB doesn't throw the ball their way, X welcomes it. And that's on a team with as little DL talent as any in the NFL.

Xavien Howard is the 2nd most valuable commodity associated with the Miami Dolphins behind only Hard Rock Stadium itself. Literally the only thing we need more than X is the field they play on. Ya, let's trade him.

What happens when players get paid? They stop caring until their contract year. Howard is a money and me guy, clearly. He gets paid, he will do nothing next year.

He gets hurt a lot. He got whooped by Hopkins (yes Hopkins is best WR in league but so what? You want to be paid as best CB, then shut down the best WR).

Having 7 picks in 12 games didnt get us to the playoffs did it?

Josh Norman got a huge deal, how did that work out? Not well.

If a team offers a 1st for Howard, you take it. The only elite player any team needs is a QB.

Here would be my plan.

Extend your CB and LT since they are premium positions, you will be able to achieve this because you will be drafting your QB and hopefully your DL (other premium expensive positions) on the cheaper rookie contracts.

Oh- and don’t sign and pay big dollars for other teams FA

Problem is we didn't scheme around Howard.

Shutdown coners take away half the field. Next season qbs will look his way less often .

That means the DE on his side of the field is really coming from the blind side. Blitzing should be easier.

With Howard on the field any capable Defensive coordinator should be able to build around him .

Here's how I see it. Miami has two studs at the most valuable positions in Howard at corner and Tunsil at LT. The team is in transition at quarterback, need a legit pass rusher or two and another corner opposite Howard. Long way to go at the other important positions.

I'd hang onto Howard and Tunsil.

How many lock down corners that are free agents want to come to Miami? This guy won at least 3 games this year by himself with game saving interceptions. He is worth the money and we should make him the highest paid cornerback in the league with incentives.

Can you people imagine letting this guy go and having him sign with the Patriots? We cant make the same mistake we made with Landry, specially because Howard is worth the money.
The pats don't pay anyone top $. Not even Brady.

I can honestly see both sides of the argument. X, assuming he avoids serious injury, will probably be an elite level player for the duration of the contract. In three years, the $ won't look as large, as the scale rises quickly yr after yr. That's the upside.

The downside is if he does get hurt, that's a ton of $. He also seems like a "me" guy, with some of his comments. I know that's just a subjective opinion, but what if he takes the $, and then gets lazy?

That could be said about anyone though.

If we could trade him for a middle 2020 first, and a 2019 second, I would have to seriously consider it.

Does this scenario make it clearer:

We draft a future HOF Qb and know it in his 2nd year. Do we trade him away for a draft pick because we can't / don't want to pay him top money?
Totally see your point, but it's apples, and oranges. First of all, isn't X going into his fourth year? That's not the same as "second yr".

Second of all, I know it's not an either, or situation, but given that choice, I value an elite QB higher than an elite corner.

Before someone says it, I know there are no guarantees we get an "elite" QB if X is traded.

A first is not enough. Any team that trades for Howard, is already a playoff team, trying to get the final pieces. Therefore it is not likely to be an early rd1 pick.

I need more than a mid round 1st. Quite a bit more.
