Howard Officially Among League’s Best, But Does He Fit In Dolphins’ Long-term Plans?

Guilty hoops and my apologies Mach 2

Not sure why I thought tannenbaum used reason in his decisions

Does this scenario make it clearer:

We draft a future HOF Qb and know it in his 2nd year. Do we trade him away for a draft pick because we can't / don't want to pay him top money?

A corner Cannot carry a team to a Super Bowl.

A franchise QB can

Marino carried us to many of them with bum corners. While Brady lives in the super bowl hunt with good to very good corners all the time. Let that sink in.

You keep X and pay him top 5 corner money.

I trade him for a first to give me the best chance to bundle and get a Franchise QB

I’m really happy with that. And the odds are that I will have a better, more stable, competitive team. And that you will have, well, a team like the Fins for the last 2 decades

LOL

OK Nostradamus.

It's all going to come down to the money. He's a good CB and you have to spend some of the money. The issue is you can't have more than maybe one or two of these type of contracts. Because then it becomes a problem. Him missing the last four games makes me a little nervous to give him that amount of cash. Is his contract up for discussion of this off-season or do we get another year to see what he has before the front office has to think about a contract?

Every team wants a franchise qb, bookend lt, rush end, and a lock down corner. We have 2 of the 4 and need to retain them. When you find one you keep him. You can accumulate picks by trading back from 13 to the late 20s and still keep your talented corner.

The rebuild doesn't mean unload all of your assets. It means getting rid of aging vets eating up cap space.

Getting rid of Miami's best player because they are rebuilding is the most Miami thing ever. Unless Oakland is stupid and wants to give up some first round picks so Miami can double dip in the first round, I'm not for it.

I'll blow a damn gasket if we let him walk. Extend him early and make this a player's destination. If you perform, we pay well. Why draft talent and watch them walk when they start hitting their prime all while severely overpaying free agents and mediocre players? FML!

For 75 million? We are not one player away from being a super bowl contender... Too many holes on both defense and offense. This is a contract that will cripple this team for a long time.

The Dolphins traded up to the #3 slot from about where they are now for a single 2nd round pick 5 years ago. You can keep the CB (and the LT) and still trade up to get your QB, imo. Last year, they could have traded back up into the 1st for Jackson for not much at all. A move to get your guy doesn't always require selling the farm.
And the money shouldn't be an issue, there's plenty of dead weight to cut on this roster. They will be trimming close to $50 million off of this years cap in just the first few cuts. Plus, I don't see a ripple in free agency, let alone a splash.
Also, the cap is going up over $14 million this year which is about what X would be asking. They have been letting their best talent walk over small amounts of money for a long time, it's yet another approach that should change.

Franchise QB are great to have. But 2 of the best I’ve ever seen play the game Dan and Drew. Couldn’t win with a bottom 5 defense. And yes we had a bottem 5 Defense this year, but that was more to do with the dc than the talent. The only time you trade talent for a unknown is when you have the replacement already on the roster.

I would love to extend him, but frankly, we are nowhere near being a competitor. If we can land high picks for this guy, you'd be hard pressed not to move him. Frankly, I keep Tunsil and Minkah, and not much else.

This is a rebuild, folks. Accept what that means. It means to blow it up, have a TON of cap space, and start fresh. Hybrid rebuilds don't work. You need to go all in.
