How Should The Dolphins Maneuver For A 1st Round Pick In 2020 Without Tanking?

Let's not misuse resources. Failing for Fromm is the right approach … sadly, I have no faith in our coaching search anyway. At least let's get a QB for a change. I'm tired of the string of mediocre to bad QB's we've had since Marino.

I think we should wait for the 2035 draft and select Andrew Luck II.

hmm ill decide after tonight if we should wait until 2021 for Trevor Lawrence lol. Or is there any way he can come out as a sophomore like Mike Vick did?

No!..Vick was a RED-SHIRT sophomore...

If the orgs strategy is 100% all in for the future then it's fairly simple...

Trade anything you can that's "older" for value -- so that includes Thill, Jones, and

maybe 1 or 2 others. Not a lot of value there... After that -- purge the roster of the old

stuff you can't get anything for -- which includes around 8 -9 players. So you get young in a hurry.

Next you clean the salary cap mess by dumping players like Branch, Quinn, etc.

After that you scrap the mid level dead wood from the roster like Anthony and...

get anything you can for dudes like Parker and Harris...

Go heavy with rookies - undrafted FAs and YOUTH across the board.

Use next season to build / develop first and foremost and concede the fact

winning "now" is window dressing... Realize where you're at and focus on "winning"

in the future.

There's only so many choices:

1) Get a high pick by losing a lot of games.
2) Mortgage future picks to trade up.
3) Trade good/elite talent for picks.

(1) and (3) was the approach taken by the Gruden and the Raiders. (3) also lends itself to (1). If we were to actually attempt #3, the players that COULD net picks (not necessarily high ones) are Jones, Wake, Howard, Tunsil, Tannehill, James. Of that list, most people wouldn't want to do that to Wake unless he wanted to be traded to a competitor. Howard, though you have to pay, is an elite talent at DB that you'd like to be able to keep on any defense. You need an elite LT to protect your QB. So really, that leaves Jones (who is expendable since you have TJM and Fitz), Tannehill, and James. These are all mid-round picks AT BEST and might not give you the ammo to move up too far.

Since you don't have a Khalil Mack that you can trade away and get back a huge return, you're looking at #1 and #2. One of those sets you back much further than the other, especially if you are wrong on the QB pick.
Great analysis @oasis thanks!

IMHO, there are cornerstone players and replaceable players. Like you mentioned, LT is very hard to replace and if you have a gem you don't let them go. I would say ditto for an elite CB. These and pass rushers and QB's are your cornerstones. I would keep the cornerstones LT Laremy Tunsil and CB Xavien Howard.

I would also keep the guys on rookie contracts like Fitzpatrick, Gesicki, Baker, McMillan, Tankersley, Taylor, Godchaux, and Smythe. All the veterans are expendable, that includes anyone who is tradeable. Then tank the team, get a top pick, and get a QB. I would aim for the #1 overall pick, because that's the only way you know you'll get the QB you want. For me, that's Jake Fromm.

Look, I don't want to suck … ever. But I'm damn tired of mediocrity. Decades of it. I want the Dolphins to be great again … not just good, but GREAT. Tony the Tiger GRRRRRRRRREAT!

Younger fans do not realize that the Dolphins used to be the gold standard that the Patriots are today. We used to dominate the division, we used to be in the playoffs every year--it was a given. We used to be the team everyone feared playing. We used to win … a lot … every year. The Patriots used to be called the "Patsies" because we beat them like a drum so often. We went a decade or so without losing to the Bills even once. We used to own the Jets.

It's time dominant NFL football returned to Miami. I'm willing to take one sucky season to get it. The way forward is with an elite coach and QB. If we get a great QB, that should set us at the most important position for more than 10 years. I say let's do that now. Fail for Fromm.

Has a team ever deliberately tanked or obviously tanked an entire season? I mean if we keep tannehill and start him, we will right back same situation.

And same thing if we go after flacco, foles, or Bridgewater. To tank properly none of those guys should be our starting QB. We would need to start someone like Fales or Faulk or if we draft a mid round QB this year then that said rookie would need to start.

So I'm not sure who our starting QB will be next year but we need long term plans and no more band aid players.

We don't have resources to trade much right now. A couple mid round picks for guys like tannehill or Reshad Jones won't be enough to solidify a top spot. We may just have to bite the bullet and go full retard and tank to save our future picks. Otherwise we would giving up a ton of future picks to get a top 5 pick in a very good QB class in 2020.

Colts started Curtis Painter for an entire year after Manning was injured before the season in the Year of Luck.

Tanking isn't so much saying, "Hey guys, let's lose all our games so we get a top pick." Not like the FO gathers around the table and lays out a plan for losing. Not like anyone pitches it to the players, or even the rest of the coaching staff.

It's more about accepting that a team isn't ready to compete, not panicking to make free agency moves to restore mediocrity (which any team COULD do), not putting in the extra coaching hours and extra effort to overachieve to mediocrity, and understanding that all of this comes with a silver lining [of a potential franchise QB]. Bad teams that have a lot of cap could easily spend to max, acquiring free agents that would get them to 8-8. They usually don't do it. The Dolphins have unfortunately done that regularly in the past decade.

So yes, there are always teams that are "tanking."

I'd trade back as much as possible this draft for future picks. Particularly out of the first to net future high picks, or more tradable capital in this draft.

I just wish I knew if they were going to tank so I can cancel my DirecTV subscription. Save me about $2,800 a year!

2800? Maybe ease up on the bells and whistles?

You trade assets if you got any, suck during a growth year and get a HC who will make having a young talented oline a priority.

And yes I trade Howard if his asking price remains where it is, as in today's NFL, you have to score points first and foremost.

Just looking at my bill....

I have the mid-tier package (choice) for $83 per month. I added HBO and they threw in Cinemax for free on the deal and then started charging me for it after 3 months. That's an additional $31 per month.

(You can add any new programming with the push of a button but you have to call them directly and spend about 45 minutes to remove anything.)

Now add in $6.64 for a worthless regional sports package that I never ordered and told them to cancel 6 months ago.

Multiple TV set up $14
Advanced Receiver service (DVR) $25
Protection plan $8.99

Sales tax 3.85
Com tax 19.40

$48.99x6 ($294) for NFL Ticket

Bill amount $240.85

Now I just read they are raising all prices Dish, Directv, comcast, etc. to make up for the losses of people cutting cords. I may soon be joining them.

THEY DID NOT. Collins got hurt after 3 games.

Man, you people are ****ing unbelievable.

Kerry Collins was RETIRED. That was the Jay Cutler move... Doesn't scream trying to win... and he was concussed, hardly out for the season. and then once the losses piled up, they didn't budge off Painter... UNTIL they secured the #1 overall pick.
