Why Kyler Murray Can Be The Savior For The Miami Dolphins

If you can trade up for him without giving up future 1st's, do it. I still think Arizona should draft him and look to trade Rosen to someone like Jacksonville or Denver. Rosen was my QB3 in 2018, and he'd be my QB3 this year, but he's closer to Haskins than he was Darnold.

So much disappointment heading our way.

I just don’t see Grier ( Mr Prototype) and especially Marino being all in on a small QB. Hopefully Flores bangs the table for him but I doubt it.

yeah I think that prototype thing with grier if he's a parcells disciple has merit

Miami Dolphins: Kyler Murray, QB/WR, Oklahoma

NFL teams all soured on Russell Wilson leading up to the 2012 NFL Draft despite the fact that Wilson had more experience and was more accomplished than Kyler Murray over a longer span. While Wilson didn't win the Heisman, he probably would have if he played in the Big XII. Instead, Wilson thrived in two conferences where teams actually play some sort of defense. Despite this, Wilson fell to the third round. Now, just because Wilson has been an exception rather than the rule, Murray is somehow expected to be chosen in the opening round even though he's two inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter than Wilson!

None of this makes any sense, especially when factoring in Murray's lack of starting experience, his extremely easy schedule this past season against all of the woeful Big XII defenses, his struggles against Alabama prior to garbage time, and the fact that teams may not be convinced that he's going to dedicate himself to football with baseball being a possibility. All of these things are strikes against Murray, which was relayed to me by an NFC personnel man I spoke to on Friday afternoon. I asked him about Murray, and while he expressed concern about his size, it was his dedication to football that was the major concern.

"Murray should probably go on Day 2, but will probably go in the first round because he's a hot name," the personnel man said. "We assumed he was going into baseball because of Scott Boras, so no one wrote up any reports on him."

Adam Schefter reported that general managers told him that Murray will be a first-round pick. This obviously came from general managers who didn't want Murray; otherwise, they wouldn't have said anything. Quite often, NFL teams don't know what others are going to do. I spoke to an assistant general manager days before the 2017 NFL Draft and asked him what he thought the 49ers would do at No. 2 overall. He said he thought they would take Patrick Mahomes. Last year, Charlie Campbell spoke to a general manager who thought the Giants would go with Sam Darnold with the second pick. Both of these people we spoke to are great talent evaluators, but they simply didn't know what other teams would do. Thus, the general managers Schefter spoke to were just guessing, like the NFC personnel man I spoke to. The possibility of Murray declaring has shocked the league, to say the least.

That said, the general managers Schefter spoke to were doing something else as well. They were building hype for Murray. We've already established that those general managers don't want Murray, so they're trying to raise his value so that some team in front of them takes Murray, causing a better player to fall to them. I coined the phrase, "bad teams make dumb picks" a long time ago, and this is a case where the good teams are trying to bait a bad team to make yet another dumb pick.

I then thought about it. Who could take Murray in the first round? Well, there's no dumber owner of a bad team in the NFL than Stephen Ross. I'm sure he's smart in real life, but when it comes to managing his football team, Ross has made countless blunders. Ross also loves hype. He constantly invites celebrities no one cares about to games to try to draw a crowd. This would be another instance of Ross trying to draw attention to the Dolphins. He may demand for his next regime to draft Murray because he thinks a 5-foot-9, 190-pound quarterback, who thrived in a conference where zero defense is played, won't get half of his passes batted at the line of scrimmage somehow.

Ya, I don't frequent the site or anything, this is just the time of year I tend to scour mocks and came across that one. It's certainly a different take than what has widely been discussed elsewhere

I wasn't critiquing you. It's a good find for posterity.

I clicked the link out of curiosity...he gave the Jets an A+ for hiring Gase, and the Fins an F- for firing him.

EDIT: Other fun tidbits...

2018 prediction: 4-12 "Miami might be the worst team in the NFL this year."

2016 prediction: 4-12 "The Dolphins appear to be one of the worst teams in the league."

If Dan Marino taught us anything it's that we don't need a savior at QB, we need a great QB surrounded by a great team.

This but even teams without great QBs get to and win super bowls.

Foles, McMahon, Rypien, Brad Johnson, Jeff Hostetler, Doug Williams, Trent Dilfer, etc... and even more average QBs have made the super bowl. Marino (who I love and is my all-time favorite QB) never won one. Great teams win !

.
I disagree

We would have been nothing without Marino.

God bless that man

Yeah and we would have won super bowls if we had a better team. No defense and no run game lead to no super bowls. Joe Montana won super bowls with the 2nd, 1st, 8th and 3rd ranked defense, and in 3 of his 4 superbowls his run game was ranked in the top 10.

When stories start piling up about Murray being selfish and disliked by his own team, and questioning his pocket feel and vision, I'll start with the Murray comparisons.

He may not be selfish or disliked but the fact that he has baseball on his mind is also worrisome to me. Not sure if he is 100% committed to football.

Exactly. Everything was already front and center with Robert Griffin. I will never understand how he vaulted up the rankings in the late going, not merely the draft but the Heisman Trophy above Andrew Luck.

I don't look at so-called tape but I see these guys while following games I wager on. Robert Griffin was an outright self-obsessed jerk from his freshman year forth. I remember the whining against Connecticut his freshman year, then against Illinois in a bowl game when he spited a kid who intercepted his pass, and during a rout at Oklahoma State his senior year.

Likewise the lack of awareness and self-protection was always there.

I don't know how he managed to camouflage things his rookie season but it always pays not to overreact and change your mind. Just sit back and allow the big picture realities to play out in your favor.

Kyler Murray averaged 11.6 YPA this season. That is big picture enough for me. Daniel Jones had many games throughout his career that were less than half that number.

No offense but it's apples and oranges. OU (a football blue-blood) and Duke (great academic institution). OU gets solid-good-great recruiting classes year in year out. Duke on the other hand is moreso known for Coach K and basketball.

Taking schools like Texas Tech, Baylor, Okla ST. to the woodshed every year doesn't translate to NFL success. Big XII schools leave ALOT to be desired when it comes to defense. ACC isn't dominant but is still respectable.

That's not true. Baylor, TCU, Ok State won their bowl games. Iowa State held the high flying Wash state to 28 points. Ok State last year beat VT. Texas beat Georgia. Oklahoma was in the final four two years in a row. TCU has one of the best defenses,. BIG 12 has excellent coaching staffs. They have excellent programs in BIG 12.

That maybe true in this past season; however, I'm generally speaking through the past few years overall. Texas had a decent season this year compared to the stinkers they've had in the past 4-5 years. Baylor has been up and down, Tx Tech has been mediocre at best. I'll give you Iowa St who's a program on the rise. TCU unfortunately has been on the descend the last 2 seasons. (Gary Patterson IS a excellent coach).

key to any young QB is good OC and QB coach. I think rookie qb would be all right if he was starter in Miami. we would still win some game
