This Is How The Dolphins Plan To Tank This Year

If anyone in the Miami Dolphins organization used the words "Tank" or "Tanking" while interviewing HC Candidates has to be one of the dumbest mother $%$%# on planet earth. How in the world could someone inside a professional sports team, discuss that with people outside the organization? That has to be one hell of A STUPID pie whole and should be FIRED IMMEDIATELY!!!

Don't forget 'sources' had Miami hiring Harbaugh. Give me a few minutes and I can think of a hundred others. OTOH, I can argue 'well, Mr. Flores, while we want a shot at a top QB in '20, we have no intention of tanking' includes the word "tanking."
I'm not arguing there will be no tank. I don't, however, want to bet money it will happen. And, as some have said, tanking is harder that many think.

Flores broke into the NFL as a scout and envisioned his dream job to be a GM. Speaks volumes for the guy that he did a good enough job to transition to on the field coach and then eventually be entrusted with Bill Belichek's defense.

He's so different then all the other failed BB coaching tree hires.

I don't think Stephen Ross went into any interview telling potential candidates what our plan for improvement is, would make more listen he'd listen to their plans for improvement. Someone like Flores already has a pretty good handle of our roster, believe it or not, he might actually know our roster better then most of us.

To imply in an interview that you have a clear and concise plan for "tanking" would imply you've done a thorough evaluation of the 2019 and 2020 QB classes already. That's irresponsible within itself.

The more I think about it, the more I expect this team's plan is too acquire a plethora of draft capital and let the chips fall where they may.

Also, keep an eye on Will Grier. I think there are wild cards out there like him.

I agree with you. But I'm finding it very hard to believe Anyone in Miami's hierarchy would discuss that with people outside the organization. But I'm also thinking it could be someone who's not with the Franchise any longer, who's spreading rumors. Or perhaps someone who's read a team fan blog and just went with a story? But in all honesty if Ross or anyone talked, "Tanking" for a QB in 2020, has got to be fired. To your point, it's much harder to tank than people think. If Miami looked like they were throwing games, I'd be first in line betting on Miami and win me lots of money!!! Detroit and Cleveland went 0-16, but they legitimately sucked epic wind!!! Miami came close in 2007 at 1-15, but that was in large part due to Cam "Ginn and his Family" Cameron, who was just a God awful HC.

The Fins would have to trade away any semblance of talent in exchange for picks. That's how you tank organically. Besides not signing anyone worth anything in FA. Fill the roster with low paid practice squad players. May not be the most exciting product to watch weekly ( I am planning on not renewing DirecTV Sunday Ticket anyway) but it should be good for a 1 or 2 win team.

We haven't had a competent QB in a really long time at least not consistently competent. If we're waiting until 2020 to draft a QB I don't see us acquiring one prior to that.

I meant competence as in even basic competence - like veteran backup competence. We'll end up winning more games than we'd probably like to as long as someone can get Wilson, Grant, and Drake the ball and they remain healthy.

I was reading some stories about Flores and how he does a great job getting the most out of limited talent and how he is a winner, It made me start to think about this whole tank thing. It might be harder than you think. First off you strip the team of talent. The pieces that are left are the corner stones of your team. Even if it is an uphill battle you want these guys playing 110 percent every game and trying to win, Even if we are just signing young scrubs to fill out the roster , some of these guys will never get an opportunity like this again and if our coaching staff is a winner we will get some surprizes. We also play the Jets and the Bills 4 times every year. Yes they should both be better ,but will they? We could win 2 of those 4 games. Records and talent is always a toss up between these three teams.

How do you coach players to TANK.
I think you would have players demanding trades.

I think the point of the article isn’t that the coaches try and lose games on purpose, that’s not what I was advocating, nor what the article is saying. What the article is saying is that the best way to rebuild this team and Get the best chance for a top 5 pick in the 2020 draft is to:

-Cut all of your high priced free agents
-Don’t sign expensive free agents, and certainly not any that aren’t under 30
-Try and trade down in the draft to acquire more picks
-Don’t sign any of the most expensive QB Free Agents, that means no Nick Foles, no Teddy Bridgewater
-Start David Fales and maybe another rookie you draft in this draft, probably not in the first round
-Start filling the gaps on your Offensive and defensive lines

The Coaching staff and players will still try and win all of their games, it’s just that the roster they will be working with will be talent deficient in many areas including QB as the team tries to address all of these holes over more than one year, more through the draft then anywhere else. Whilst this approach is no guarantee, it is highly likely that the team will be drafting high next year when by all accounts it looks like a much deeper talent pool to pick a franchise QB with multiple options including Tua, Fromm, etc.

I support this strategy because I think it’s our best chance to get a franchise QB without having to spend so much draft capital in the form of picks and future picks to move up to draft one when we will still have tons of holes to fill and the approach should be to try and fill as many of those holes with draft picks as opposed to high priced free agents.

Alternatively, maybe they draft Murray if he’s there at 13. I wouldn’t trade up for him, but if he fell to us I wouldn’t be opposed to drafting him because if he’s great like a russel Wilson type, then we solved our problem, if he is too small for the NFL, then we will still lose lots of games and will still be in a position to draft another QB in 2020. I’D prefer we didn’t do this because we could fill some holes on either line or at corner, pass rusher, guard, center, and then get our QB in the 2020 draft without trading any draft capital to do so, but I would be intrigued to see if Murray’s it factor translates at the pro level. In any case, this off season will likely be more interesting then the regular season so I will follow it closely...

Which is why i roll my eyes when I here our fans talk about tanking.

Pure entertainment but hard to relate to.

And with that said...I still dont think we are tanking. That's just a dumb philosophy all around. Let's teach how to lose then push the winning button next year lol. I mean come on guys trying to put the best performance out on tape. Coaches are playing to win..fans want to see wins..yet you want us to buy into this whole we are gonna try to lose "organically" lol whatever that means. Stop it. It's not a good business move for anyone employed by the dolphins.

If true which I would not doubt, Ross is so fcking stupid. He doesn't know sht about football and is already claiming his love for Tua (which I feel is far from a can't miss prospect. Oh wait there's also the possibility that he stays in school. And Fromm too. All of a sudden this QB class everyone is in love with is led by Herbert and not much else. But we can also tank again in 2020 right?

Players risk serious injuries if they go out there to lose.

We only won 6 games this year while we were trying hard to win and with a team that had plenty of veteran players. Take away most of those vets and start a very young QB and we'll be hard pressed to win more than 2 games. It's not really losing on purposed but just a fact that when you go with mostly young players and no real QB then you're just going to lose a lot.
We actually won 7 games last year, not 6 as you stated.
It all depends on injuries. We have several good young core of players. The QB play cant be worse than last year no matter who the QB is.
With a new coaching staff, the players will be fighting for their jobs and futures to impress the new coaches.
They are not tanking on purpose.
I guarantee you they will win more than 2 games. Probaby in the 5-7 range again.
Again depending on injuries.

If this is true(which I think it is) then it really puts the pending Howard contract in additional light.

If your goal is to build the best roster going forward then I don't know how you don't explore trade value for him.

If a team offers you a late 1st round pick for him then how do you know seriously consider that?

IMO, If you don't have a QB and some decent protection for that QB in this league then you're not going anywhere.

You could have Dion Sanders playing one of the DB spots and it isn't happening without a strong offense.
