Xavien Howard Has Heard Trade Rumors

So then who do we ever pay? If don’t pay our home grown talent, who gets the money? What mythical thing do you imagine we do with all this unused cap space if it isn’t being used on our own players?

You pay a guy like Laremy Tunsil who has been elite all his life

I'll go back to 1974. Csonka, Kiick and Warfield were a package deal. Names always linked. But only two of them had been elite all their life.

It would have been locally unpopular to pay Csonka and Warfield, but let Jim Kiick go. That would have been the proper perspective for Joe Robbie.

I believe we have people in here who think there is that PERFECT football player who a team should sacrifice its ALL for, and cut or trade the rest.

NEWS FLASH: NO SUCH PLAYER EXISTS.

I don't know what some of you want. We have outstanding players at 2-3 positions and you want to give away every vestige of young talent we amass over time just for the ONE PERFECT transcendent player who is not there.

I don't see any generational QB coming down the pike for YEARS. Trevor Lawrence is the closest thing to that and he is 2-3 seasons away.

Unless this FO has stipulations for that position that go beyond talent (which is a MAJOR, MAJOR possibility in today's climate) I say go for a Drew Lock and roster-build all along the board.

AND KEEP a talent like X when you get him.

And everyone needs to keep things in perspective. Xavien Howard is NOT!! a free agent. Again, he is under team control for another realistic THREE years if they choose.

If they have to tag him in 2020 & 2021 for $15+M, they may as well extend him now.

Why?? There is no team advantage to giving him a contract this spring. He is asking for a contract that pays him more than Josh Norman's 16 mil a year.

If he wants to sign a 6 year deal at about 12 mil a year that would be max. He was ranked 20th this last year AND....he missed games injured.

IMO, he isn't even a #1 corner. I would still like to keep him on the team, and we can do that without giving him a ridiculous contract.

Xavien wants to get paid as the #1 CB in the NFL. Good for him, but a fair question to ask is if he's worth that contract? Does anyone think his play holds up after he gets paid?

I know the site is a bit bi-polar on PFF, but he was ranked 16th in the NFL this year. His redemption are his interceptions. I think he's got a nack for them, but what he is doing now on a per game basis is absolutely impossible to maintain.

Again, I don't want to see Howard go, but if someone is willing to give me picks for him....I am very interested.

16. XAVIEN HOWARD, MIAMI DOLPHINS

Howard had a very boom-or-bust season. His 50.9 percent catch rate was third-best in the NFL, but at the same time, his 16.2 yards per catch allowed was the second-worst among corners. Still, seven picks in only 12 games is pretty absurd production for the Dolphins corner.

Sweet response.. Some of those players you mentioned are on rookies deals. You don't trade good players on rookie contracts.

I am not paying X as the top CB in the league. Injury concerns and a team that does not have there lines built.

Sure we can compete by making good moves over the next 2 years you say. When could you have not said that about the Dolphins over the last 20 years? I don't trust this team to make good moves until I see it.

The below scenario to me is a good start.

Trade out of the 1st this year, address online and dline in the draft, tank the season, grab a QB round one 2020.

Yes but the way everyone is talking the Dolphins will never compete again. So why not trade every young player and keep getting as many draft picks as possible. It at least makes the draft exciting which as far as many believe is the only thing Dolphins fans have to look forward to. You will eventually have to pay guys like Fitzpatrick and Tunsil as well and since many don't want the Dolphins to pay for good players, really what is the point in waiting. Just get it over with now.

If you are looking to compete you pay a player that has shown signs that he could be an elite CB. This is not like paying 15 mil to Landry who was a good player but did not show potential to be an elite #1 WR. Guys like Howard and Tunsil should be paid. The cap will be fine as long as they don't do anything stupid again like overpaying average players such as Branch and Alonso. With the team building through the draft a big contract to Howard is a risk that the team should be willing to take.

Quoting PFF for anything other then line play...

Forget the individual ranking then. The 16+ yards per catch allowed isn’t an attractive stat.

All I’m saying is when rebuilding we should be cautious with who we back up dump trucks of money to. He’s had a really good season and a half, and wants to be paid like an all-pro.

We have people who aren’t happy about the Reshad Jone contracts, I sense there could be some similarities down the road.

I’m not some guru but just airing out thoughts on the matter.

FYI I remember that Simpsons ep and that gif is giving me a good chuckle

I wouldn't judge anyone on the '18 defense too harshly. They had an incompetent person running the unit. No pash rush, constant blown coverages and just confusion all around made some players look worse than they probably are in reality. Hopefully Flores and his staff can coach guys up, run a modern dynamic scheme and actually game plan effectively for each opponent.

And all of these arguments for keeping and paying X can be made next year at this time. Dolphins don't need to pay a guy the biggest bucks in the league before his rookie contract is up because he logged 7 interceptions in a particular season.

Well those 3 QBs have combined for 1 ring in 19 years of football.

Rodgers has had his team around average for 3-4 years.

Yes a great qb makes a difference but you can’t have a great qb and a **** team or you’ll be the saints with perpetual 7-9 seasons.

You're missing the point. If we trade X and land a franchise QB, that QB will have a greater impact on our team's success. I dont want to trade him, but I want a legit top 10 QB more. X isnt getting us into the playoffs. X isnt going to lead a game winning drive. X isnt throwing 50tds. X doesnt touch the ball on 99% of plays.

Darrell Revis didnt get a ring until he played on a team with a legit QB. Hmmm
