Flores Meets Shula

How old is Shula now? In his 90s? Flores might be the last Dolphins coach he ever meets. :(
Just turned 89 in January. C'mon Dolphin's, time is running out for him. Hope Flores can put him on the floor of Super Bowl.

My nephew took a picture with him right there back around Christmas.

No idea how much Flores and Shula discussed the Dolphins, but if they did I bet Flores was a little shocked by how honest Shula was in his assessment of the franchise.

If some posters don't like hearing how pitiful the organization is around here - they definitely don't want to hear Don's take. He's pretty loose lipped these days.

Bringing up Shula, I wonder how many super bowls he might have won in a salary cap NFL? When his talent was equal to the opposition, Shula's team won at probably a better than .700 clip. Obviously, the salary cap really benefits great coaches as we've seen in New England.

Before the salary cap, teams could out-talent the opposition like San Francisco and Dallas did. I remember getting excited about NFL free agency in the early days of it, but then realizing that the elite players were going to either SF or Dallas. With the exception of a few like Reggie White.

Anyway, if you look at the super bowl losses to the 49ers and Redskins both of those teams had a lot more talent than Miami.

It's just something I think about when Shula comes up. There are aspects of the salary cap that I don't like such as players you love leaving your team, lack of depth etc.

Luckily I'm only 27(birthdays on the 19th), but I seriously have concerns I might not see a 'ship before I die....let alone Shula...

I’d love to hear it. Good antidote to the notion that if you love the team you have to think things are great or that they’ll soon be so.

Just for a second...don't imagine that Shula is there. Just imagine walking into that office and the stories that can be told from everything on those shelves and on the walls. Talk about walking into the room of rooms. Getting to meet and talk with Shula is icing on the cake.

Now the scarf on the other hand. WTF?

Fantastic. Glad they are connecting. As a Dolphins fan, history is an important thing, and excellence needs to be underlined. Let's raise a glass for this passing of the torch, and hopefully a renewing of our dominance in the AFC East and the NFL in general. Winningest coach in NFL history and the man who made us the Highest Winning Percentage team in all of major US sports through the early 200's. Time to get back there again. The keys are yours Coach Flores.

I’ve always said ‘82 was his best season ever as a HC. How he got that team to the SB - and one deflected pass-near pick 6 away from winning it - against a mightily superior team was amazing. ‘84 was just bad luck in the draw. At 14-2 we were great but our D was regressing down the stretch. SF was 15-1 and and more balanced. In fact their only loss that year was by a FG in OT against the team we beat in the AFC championship game - Pitt. The ‘84 miners were better than the ‘85 bears (same record) but they don’t get the respect that the Bears team gets. Shula won 3 league championships and I think coached in 8 (Pre SB) over about a 20 year span. That’s about the same as BB’s 20 year run (9 championship appearances). BB won more of those title games but my goodness it is so hard to even make it to the dance. Shula in 33 years as HC only had 2 losing seasons: 6-8 and 6-10. Simply incredible.

No question, to almost win a super bowl with David Woodley at quarterback was a tremendous coaching job. Washington knew that they just had to take away the running game. To his credit, Woodley had played pretty well in the postseason and, at that time, he was the future at quarterback. I don't think there was anyway Shula or the Dolphins could have anticipated Dan Marino falling into their laps in the 1983 draft.

SF had superior talent and essentially had a home game in the super bowl. Miami led early, but obviously fell apart. You nailed it, the defense really struggled for the Dolphins down the stretch. I also wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers salaries were at least twice what Miami's was.

Great googly moogly. Am I so old that Shula is that old?

Life is cruel, man- watching those you love and admire deteriorate.

Here's to him living another 90 years with quality of life.

Nice pic. Thanks.
