Miami Dolphins Rebuild? Here’s A Plan For An Aggressive Tear-down To Start

I'm on the fence regarding the Howard trade. I could see the benefit towards letting him go to be honest. I think I agree with everything else Mando says in this particular article though, definitely don't overpay for James.

In my opinion, stripping assets is the right way to do it. Will they actually get it right, regarding who they get rid of, who they bring in? Probably not. But at least the thought process is right, I think.

2007 we suck but 2008 we made playoff w soft schedule and Pennington as our qb. I hope we don't let good young player go. I don't have problems letting old player over 30 go. we will see come march what direction they are going.

No need to trade Howard even with rebuild.
Qb and left tackle, corner and pass rushers. They are important. We got two. Why trade and blow the pick. Patrick surtain for matt Roth? Picks are nice but you got to cash them in .

Also it won’t be hard for this team to only win 4 games. They over achieved this year.
Start Falk or Brock. You got your 1 win tank job. Easily.

Some will fall apart if we don't get their QB this offseason. For instance if we don't get Murray and he has a god rookie season there will be posters who will never let the site hear the end of the fact that we should have done whatever it took ton draft him.

Murray size and motivation scare me. His arm is sexy though.

Only certain folks will turn on him. Mainly those who will remain Tannehill and Gase fanboys.

Anyways, Ross couldn't have been more clear, and those expecting playoffs next year or a run to the Super Bowl are living in a land of delusions. But hey, that's how some people survive.
Man, you have a scary fixation with Tannehill. Just let it go, already. Everyone else has moved on but you.

I think it's just your mindset tbh. I had a lot of fun cheering for losses during the Suck For Luck season until Matt Moore blew it like I knew he would.

Your excitement shouldn't be based on merely wins or losses, but how close we are to being Super Bowl caliber. At least that's how I operate. I'm going to have more fun cheering to lose next year because I know it's going to give us a better chance in the future as opposed to the hamster wheel we've been on for 20 years.

I'll bet Browns fans are going to have more fun this year watching their team than they've had in a looooooong time and in order to do that, they had to endure being terrible, but it was at least resulting in something positive.

I agree. If only we had a time machine to just get to that point already.

Thank you. The notion that you have to jettison all of your talent to stockpile picks just so you can “move up” for that QB is a bit antiquated. Nearly any team can trade up for one any year. There is no rule that states only picks from one draft year can be packaged together to move up. The only question is how much do you value a pick vs an established player?

Some fans believe draft picks are worth more than any player. Let’s say Miami has a mid-round pick in the first round in 20. Since most fans are in love with Tua (still think he will bust, personally), let’s say Miami offers their first rounder, plus a first and second the following year, and a conditional first or second round pick in the year after to move up and get him. Are you OK with that? If Miami packaged every pick from their 20 draft plus a few high round picks the following year for Tua, are you good with that? My guess is that many will say no, because it’s too much to give away for any one prospect, even if it is the perceived legend they believe Tua will be, This is because they know that more talent is going to be needed than just a QB and that most picks are never successful, so you need more picks to hedge your bets and make up for the inevitable bulk of blown picks.

The flip side to this are fans that value players over picks. These are people who understand the true, pure gamble nature of the draft and just how hard it is to draft really good talent at ANY position. Since elite talent at any position is rare, when you have successfully drafted it, they believe you keep that talent. After all, what is the draft for if not to get elite talent? These fans understand it has been since 2004 (Surtain) since the Dolphins have had an elite corner like Howard, and don’t believe trading Howard away for a high bust potential player and a decade plus of Jamar Fletchers is worth the few draft picks gained in a trade.

In reality, the correct approach is likely in the middle. Get rid of older players and bad contracts. Trade players with higher ceilings than they have been able to reach for the Dolphins, but do not let go of proven excellence and talent that is showing excellent growth and appears will reach elite status (Minka, for example). This is a rebuild, not a tank, and I believe it is a far better strategy.

Let what go? I'm quite excited for a new start. He and Davie have literally wasted my time and YOURS in a feeble attempt at excellence these past 7 years. I also thought we were stuck with him until 2020. So his departure is something I'm truly grateful for in 2019.

But the fanboys, like you, have been a constant eye sore for 7 years. Maybe it's time you let it go?

Before Miami can move up somebody else has to want to move down.
****************
Moving on to X. Howard, he's 25years old (7/4/1993). Figure tank seasons of 1 or 2 years. for either Tua or Trevor then allowing 2-3 seasons for said QB to develop. Howard is done. Aside from selling tickets, paying top dollar for CB when the entire team is going to suck by design isn't smart.

Reminds me of the Raiders having the worst team in the entire NFL and giving an enormous contract to Nnamdi Asomugha then cutting him for cap reasons.

Almost like the Suh contract.

The money saved by not paying Howard is going to what...?

Dead cap space unload bad contracts asap.

Really a side benefit, have two 1st round picks maturing at the same time your QB of the future is developing is the real benefit.

J.J. understood this fact when he dumped Hershall Walker for a truckload of picks. If trading Howards gets me a stud OL and stud true alpha-dog WR. I'm doing it.

I would keep and re-sign Howard. I'm open to every other move. I'm sure there will be a few who Flores wants to keep for 1 more season, locker room leaders loyal to him, but whomever it is, there will not be many of them. This is going to be a gut … a complete teardown, and it needs to be.

Not out of the realms of possibilities for me...but I don't see anywhere I can be blown out of the water.

Keep in mind, it's not what you want the team to look like next year, or even the year after, but who will be a contributor 3-5 years down the road.

I'm curious how Grier approaches this rebuild.

One advantage he has, is that there are almost zero expectations for next year. After that, I want to see, at the very minimum, an ascending defense, and a consistent running attack.

You have to crawl before you walk.

You have to execute basic, fundamental football plays before you move to exotic schemes.

How quickly can Flores, and the gang teach? That is the question.
