No need to trade Howard even with rebuild.
Qb and left tackle, corner and pass rushers. They are important. We got two. Why trade and blow the pick. Patrick surtain for matt Roth? Picks are nice but you got to cash them in .
Also it won’t be hard for this team to only win 4 games. They over achieved this year.
Start Falk or Brock. You got your 1 win tank job. Easily.
Thank you. The notion that you have to jettison all of your talent to stockpile picks just so you can “move up” for that QB is a bit antiquated. Nearly any team can trade up for one any year. There is no rule that states only picks from one draft year can be packaged together to move up. The only question is how much do you value a pick vs an established player?
Some fans believe draft picks are worth more than any player. Let’s say Miami has a mid-round pick in the first round in 20. Since most fans are in love with Tua (still think he will bust, personally), let’s say Miami offers their first rounder, plus a first and second the following year, and a conditional first or second round pick in the year after to move up and get him. Are you OK with that? If Miami packaged every pick from their 20 draft plus a few high round picks the following year for Tua, are you good with that? My guess is that many will say no, because it’s too much to give away for any one prospect, even if it is the perceived legend they believe Tua will be, This is because they know that more talent is going to be needed than just a QB and that most picks are never successful, so you need more picks to hedge your bets and make up for the inevitable bulk of blown picks.
The flip side to this are fans that value players over picks. These are people who understand the true, pure gamble nature of the draft and just how hard it is to draft really good talent at ANY position. Since elite talent at any position is rare, when you have successfully drafted it, they believe you keep that talent. After all, what is the draft for if not to get elite talent? These fans understand it has been since 2004 (Surtain) since the Dolphins have had an elite corner like Howard, and don’t believe trading Howard away for a high bust potential player and a decade plus of Jamar Fletchers is worth the few draft picks gained in a trade.
In reality, the correct approach is likely in the middle. Get rid of older players and bad contracts. Trade players with higher ceilings than they have been able to reach for the Dolphins, but do not let go of proven excellence and talent that is showing excellent growth and appears will reach elite status (Minka, for example). This is a rebuild, not a tank, and I believe it is a far better strategy.
