We've tried fixing the team with a series of bandages. Unless something has changed, the data clearly shows we are not good at doing that. We haven't tried nuking it and starting over. Given that only Grier remains from essentially nuking the front office and coaching staff, this seems like a good time to wipe it clean and actually rebuild rather than Just-Another-Patch-Job.
Looking at this year's coaching class, I wasn't impressed. Looking at this year's QB class, I'm not impressed. I could go in depth, but IMHO, the only good QB coming out is Kyler Murray, but he has red flags that make me very hesitant to pull the trigger, and he isn't a scheme fit for the system it seems Coach Flores wants to run. If he plays football, and if he stays healthy, and if he is put in a system built around his gifts and mobility, then I think he will be a successful NFL QB. But none of those look likely in Miami.
Miami is where everyone gets injured. Our OL is suffering through the longest down-streak I can think of in franchise and even NFL history. The new offensive system hinges on the QB being fantastically precise in location and timing as well as making pre-snap reads. It is the basis of inflicting what I refer to as Death By A Thousand Cuts from clinical short passing and constantly converting 3rd downs and red zone opportunities. If we make this offense work, it will be a true testament to this coaching staff, as it is the polar opposite from what we've seen for the last decade. I don't see any of the QB's in this draft being a good fit for this offense, but I do see some in the 2020 draft I think will become that type of player.
Let's tear down this structure that is clearly flawed. Strip it back to the foundation, rebuild on the good young pillars we have, such as Laremy Tunsil, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Xavien Howard. Invest in a new core of players committed to learning from our new coaching staff and who fit their systems. Quit trying to inject a serum into the locker room to cure the culture, simply wash the entire thing away and start again with guys who will form the basis of the right locker room--like Minkah Fitzpatrick. Use this 2019 tank season to blood lots of young players and speed their development. Take 1st rounder in the Top 3 and draft that foundational QB that is most likely to excel in the new coaching staff's system. Use those other high draft picks to flesh out this completely rebuilt roster with the understanding that we're committed to developing our own players.
Build something great. End the cycle of throwing resources in an attempt to bring subpar back up to mediocre. Resist the short-term urge to simply take the best of a poor QB class and shoehorn a square peg into a round hole. Hold off until 2020 and get one of the round pegs that fit Coach Flores' system. Throw off the baggage of past failures and flawed rosters holding us back. Endure the short-term pain and dare to be great.
