The funny part is that there was a point in 2017 where there was serious debate about starting NATE SUDFELD over Nick Foles.
Foles took over for Carson Wentz, and the Eagles won a shootout with the Giants the next week. But then, the offense fell apart. They didn’t score a TD for almost two full weeks, almost losing to the Raiders, and getting shut out by the Cowboys. Nick Foles looked completely lost. Nate Sudfeld played most of the game against the Cowboys. There was a feeling of hopelessness going in to the playoffs, and Doug Pedersen didn’t rule out going to Sudfeld in the playoffs if things got bad.
Now, this is the part where I start feeling like a broken record. I like Nick Foles. I think in the right offense, he can win. But if you do not have a team around him that can change its play style to hide his deficiencies and amplify his strengths, he will not win you games consistently. Nick Foles will not “win you games by himself.”
The Eagles figured that out. So what did they do? They changed their offensive design. More short passes designed to get YAC, including...wait for it...bubble screens. They didn’t ask Foles to do as much in the pocket, because he simply couldn’t...and can’t...create like Wentz. They simplified the game plan. And it worked.
So, again, if you want a guy who is a seasoned veteran, who can be the final piece on a team that is talented enough to run an offense to suit his play style? Sure. He can do the job. But if you’re trying to rebuild a team, and you’re going to have a slew of new faces learning to play together? I don’t think he’s a guy you spend 20mm on over multiple years.
